عن هارون بن عبد الله رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ أنه قال لأبي عبد الله (أحمد
بن حنبل) رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: جاءني كتاب من الرقة أن قوما قالوا: لا
نقول: معاوية خال المؤمنين، فغضب وقال: ما اعتراضهم في

Harun ibn 'Abdillah alds once informed Imam
Ahmad ibn Hanbal alds that he received a letter
from Raqqah that a group of people (from amongst
them) said, "We will not say that Mu awiyah is the
maternal uncle of the believers." Imaam Ahmad ibn
Hanbal aldas became angry and said, "What is their
objection here? They shall be alienated until they
repent (from this gross statement of theirs)."

عن أبي الحارث رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ قال: وجهنا رقعة إلى أبي عبد الله
رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: ما تقول رحمك الله فيمن قال: لا أقول إن معاوية
كاتب الوحي، ولا أقول إنه خال المؤمنين، فإنه أخذها بالسيف
غصبا؟ قال أبو عبد الله رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: هذا قول سوء رديء،

يجانبون هؤلاء القوم، ولا يجالسون، ونبين أمرهم للناس.
Abul Harith &ld narrates that a piece of paper
was given to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal aids (with
the following question): What do you say - may
Allah have mercy upon you- regarding a person
who says, "I do not consider Mu awiyah to be a
scribe of (writing the) revelation nor do I consider
him to be the maternal uncle of the believers, for
indeed he has forcefully taken it with the sword."
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal aldus replied, "That is an

evil downright statement. Such people must be
shunned and their gatherings must be avoided. And
we shall expose their (evil) matter to the people."
قال رجل للحكم بن هشام رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ ما تقول في معاوية؟ قال

ذاك خال كل مؤمن.
A man enquired regarding Sayyidunā Muawiyah
He. رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ from Imam Hakam ibn Hisham رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
replied, "He is the maternal uncle of every
believer."

عن عبد الملك بن عبد الحميد الميموني رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قال: قلت
لأحمد بن حنبل رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ: أليس قال النبي صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((كل
صهر ونسب ينقطع إلا صهري ونسبي))؟ قال: بلى. قلت: وهذه

لمعاوية؟ قال: نعم، له صهر ونسب.
'Abdul Malik ibn 'Abdil Hamīd Maymunī alda
narrates that he asked Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
not say, 'Every tie of صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Did Nabi" , رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ
marriage and blood will come to an end (on the Day
of Resurrection) except my ties of marriage and
blood'." Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal alds affirmed
this narration. 'Abdul Malik alds then asked, "Is
this (also) for Mu awiyah?" Imam Ahmad ibn
Hanbal alds replied, "Of course! He has ties of
both, marriage and blood (with Rasūlullah

عن عمر بن بزيع رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ قال: سمعت علي بن عبد الله بن
عباس رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُمُ وأنا أريد أن أسب معاوية فقال لي: مهلا، لا
تسبه؛ فإنه صهر رسول الله صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.7
'Umaribn Bazī' alass says, "I wanted to speak ill of
Muawiyah but 'Ali ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Abbas peaks
forbade me saying, 'Take it easy! Do not speak ill of
him, for indeed he is the brother-in-law of
. صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Rasulullah

صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ His Love for Rasulullah
حدثني علقمة ابن أبي علقمة رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ عن أمه رَحِمَهَا اللَّهُ قالت:
قدم معاوية بن أبي سفيان رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُ المدينة فأرسل إلى عائشة
رَّالِلَّهُ عَنْهَا: أن أرسلي بأنبجانية رسول الله صَ لَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
وشعره، فأرسلت به معي أحمله، حتى دخلت به عليه، فأخذ
الأنبجانية فلبسها، وأخذ شعره فدعا بماء فغسله وشربه
وأفاض على جلده.

Umm 'Alqamah ◌ُرَحِمَهَا الله narrates that Sayyiduna
Muawiyah deals (once) came to Madinah. He sent
a message to Sayyidatuna 'Aishah Ccale, requesting
her to send him the plain coarse robe of Rasūlullah
.and (a few strands of) his (blessed) hair صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
She sent them to him; he took the plain coarse robe

and wore it (seeking the barakah of Rasūlullah
He took the (strands of) hair and.(صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
requested for water. He then washed it and drank
(some of) the water and poured (the remaining) on
his skin (seeking the barakah of Rasūlullah
.(صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
This narration shows the immense love that
Sayyidunā Muawiyah Meals had for Rasulullah
This narration also shows the reliance.صَلَّىاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
and trust that Ummul Mūminin Sayyidatuna
'Aishah Gealg had for him; she lent him such
special sentimental and dear items.

Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
عن عبد الأعلى بن ميمون بن مهران عن أبيه رَحِمَهُمُ اللَّهُ أن
معاوية رَضِ لَّهُ عَنْهُ قال في مرضه الذي مات فيه: كنت أوضئ
رسول الله صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلََّ. فقال لي: ألا أكسوك قميصا؟ قلت:
بلى بأبي أنت وأمي، فنزع قميصا كان عليه فكسانيه، وقلم
أظفاره فأخذت قلامتها، فإذا مت فألبسوني القميص، وخذوا
القلامة فاجعلوها في عيني، فعسى الله أن یرحمني ببركته.٥
Maymun ibn Mihran al& narrates that Sayyidunā
Muawiyah Medhe said in his terminal sickness, "I
used to assist Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم in performing
the wudu. He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم (once) said to me, 'Shall I
not give you a shirt to wear?' I replied, 'Of course!
May my father and mother be sacrificed for you (O
Rasulullah).'He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم then took off the shirt
صَلَّ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ that was on him and put it on me. He

(once) clipped his fingernails and I took the (nail)
clippings (and preserved them). So, when I die, put
that shirt on me and take the nail cuttings and
place it in my eye, for perhaps Allah may have
mercy upon me because of its blessing."

مرحبا وأهلا بابن رسول الله صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
Muhammad ibn Ya'qub Dabbi ◌ُرحمَهُ اللَّه narrates that
when Sayyiduna Muawiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedk
would meet Sayyiduna Husain (ibn 'Ali) (caul"), he
would greet him saying, "Welcome and feel at
". صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ home o son of Rasulullah

عن محمد بن أبي يعقوب الضبي رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ أن معاوية بن أبي
سفيان رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُما كان يلقى ابن الزبير فيقول مرحبا بابن عمة
رسول الله صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وابن حواري رسول الله عَلَيْهِالسَّلَامُ.

Muhammad ibn Ya'qub Dabbi ◌ُرحمَهُ اللّه narrates that
when Sayyiduna Muawiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
would meet Sayyiduna ('Abdullah) Ibn Zubayr
Reals, he would greet him saying, "Welcome o
cousin (aunt's son) of Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم and the
son of the hawarī (disciple) of Rasūlullah

Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik
عن ابن عباس رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهَا قال: لله در ابن هند، ولينا عشرين
سنة فما آذانا على ظهر منبر ولا بساط، صيانة منه لعرضه
وأعراضنا، ولقد كان يحسن صلتنا ويقضي حوائجنا62.
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas Reais said, "How excellent
was Ibn Hind! He was our leader for twenty years.
He never harmed us from the pulpit nor from the
(royal) carpet. He maintained his reputation and
protected our dignity. He treated us well and
fulfilled our needs."

عائشة رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ..... فقال: كيف أنا في الذي بيني وبينك، وفي

حوائجك؟ قالت: صالح.
Sayyidunā Muawiyah dealg once asked
Sayyidatunā 'Aishah (saules, "(O mother!) How is
my dealing with you and how well am I looking
after your needs?" She replied, "Well."

كتب معاوية رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إلى عائشة أم المؤمنين رَضِاللَُّ عَنْهَا أن
اكتبي إلي كتابا توصيني فيه، ولا تكثري على، فكتبت عائشة
رَضِ لَّهُ عَنْهَا إلى معاوية رَضِ لّهُ عَنْهُ: سلام عليك. أما بعد: فإني
سمعت رسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يقول: ((من التمس رضاء الله
بسخط الناس كفاه الله مؤنة الناس، ومن التمس رضاء
الناس بسخط الله وکله الله إلى الناس، والسلام عليك))*

Sayyiduna Mu awiyah deals once wrote to the
mother of the believers, Sayyidatuna 'Aishah
Bells, requesting her to pen for him a concise
counsel. Sayyidatuna 'Aishah (caule, wrote to
Sayyidunā Mu āwiyah, "Peace be upon you. As for
صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ what follows: Indeed I heard Rasulullah
saying, 'Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah while
displeasing the people, Allah will suffice him from

the people. And whoever seeks the pleasure of the
people while displeasing Allah, Allah will hand his
matters to the people. And peace be upon you.'."
Sayyidunā Muawiyah deals resorted to
his
spiritual mother, the mother of the believers, for
advice. Sayyidatuna 'Aishah Geale advised him in a
loving manner just as a mother would advise her
son. This hadith also shows his humility; he
referred to his subjects for advice.

لما وصل الحسين رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ نبأ وفاة معاوية رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، استرجع

وقال: رحم الله معاوية.
When the news of the death of Sayyiduna
, رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ reached Sayyiduna Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Mu awiyah
he recited innā lillahi wa innā ilaihi rāji'un and prayed
for him, "May Allah have mercy upon Muawiyah."

Comments of the Sahabah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُم, Tab'iin
regarding him رَحَهُمُ اللَّهُ and the salaf رحمَهُمُ اللَّهُ
قال ابن عباس رَضِ لّهُ عَنْهَا لمعاوية رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: لا يحزنني الله ولا
يسوءني ما أبقى الله أمير المؤمنين."

Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abās vecālē, said to Sayyidunā
Muawiyah dewhy, "Allah will not sadden me nor
distress me as long as He keeps the leader of the
believers (Sayyidunā Muawiyah &eal) alive."

'Urwah alds narrates that whenever Sayyiduna
Miswar (ibn Makhramah) deals. would mention
Sayyidunā Mu awiyah Medkg), he would invoke
blessings upon him.

العزيز؟ قال: فقال ابن المبارك رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: تراب دخل في أنف
معاوية رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مع رسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خير أو أفضل

'Abdullah ibn Mubarak alds was asked if
Sayyidunā Muawiyah deals was better or
Sayyidunā 'Umaribn Abdil 'Azīz ala .. He replied,
"(By Allah!) The dust that entered the nostrils of
Muawiyah deals while he was with Rasulullah
".is better than 'Umaribn Abdil 'Aziz صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Some narrations mention "the nostrils of the horse
of Sayyiduna Muawiyah deal". Some narrations
also mention "a thousand times better".69

سئل عبد الله بن المبارك رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: أيهما أفضل: معاوية بن أبي
سفيان أم عمر بن عبد العزيز. فقال: صلى معاوية خلف
رسول الله صَلَ للَّهُعَلَيْهِوَسَلَّمَ فقال صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: سمع الله لمن

حمده، فقال معاوية: ربنا ولك الحمد، فما بعد هذا.
'Abdullah ibn Mubarak aldas was asked if
Sayyidunā Mu āwiyah deals was better or
Sayyidunā 'Umaribn Abdil 'Azīz Xix . He replied,
"Muawiyah perfomed salah behind Rasūlullah
said " sami'allahu liman صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ He. صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
hamidah (Allah listens to the one who praises Him)'
and Mu āwiyah said thereafter, 'rabbanā wa lakal
hamd (O our Lord! To you alone belongs all praises)'.
What doubt (in regards to who is better) is there
after this (virtue)?"
