is a pl. of إنْس , (K,) originally ؟) , أناس, K,) &
pl. which is rare [as to form]; (K ;) or QUI is
pl. of ◌ْإنْسَان : (M, art. أنس;) and ناس has the
article JI prefixed to it, (S, M,) but not as a
substitute for the suppressed ., because, were it so,
it would not be found prefixed to the original,
QUI, whereas it is found prefixed to this latter :
($:) this derivation, however, from _Ui, con-
tradicts its belonging to art. y : (MF;) [but
some hold that it does belong to this art .; and
the form of its dim., to be mentioned below,
favours their opinion : Fei says,] it is a noun
applied to denote a pl., like e;š and had); and its
sing. is GLJI, from a different root : it is derived
from نَّاس , or. ◌ُيَنُوس, signifying "it hung
down and was in a state of commotion:" and
[agreeably with this derivution it is said that] its
dim. is 5: (Msb :) some, again, said that
(.إنَّسُ L, TA, voce). النَّاسِى is originally النَّاسُ

of Meyd., explains it as signifying a coffin in
which a corpse is enclosed : and 'Abd-el-Lateef

And she reaches and takes of the drinking-trough,
from above it, a copious draught by means of
which she traverses [the middles of the] waterless
deserts without needing other water. (S.) You
Bay also, نُشْتُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ شَيأ I obtained some-

refuge, protection, preservation, or concealment ;
a place of refuge; ($, Msb, Ķ:) a place to which
one flees; ($;) a place of safety, or security.

1. 2bu, aor. b,25, inf. n. L;5, He suspended
it; hung it. (Ş, Msb, K.) You say, Han Es
Yh' [I suspended the water-skin by its bus,
q.v.]. (TA.) And نيطَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْء The thing
was suspended to him, or it : and dale 1,5: (TA:)
or ◌ِ؟). نُوَّطَ عَلَيْه; accord. to two copies: the
pronoun relating to a camel when loaded.) And
-The thing was attached to, or con نيطَ بِهِ الشَّيْء
nected with, him, or it. (TA.) It is said in a
trad., ◌ِمَا أَخَذْنَاهُ إلَّا عَفْوًا بِلَا سَوْطٍ وَلا نَوْط i.e. [We
took him not save with ease; ] with neither beating,
[lit. with neither whip, ] nor hanging [or clinging].
كُلُّ شَاهِ بِرِجْلِهَا سَتُنّاط ,TA.) And in a proverb)
[Every sheep, or goat, shall be hung by its hind
leg] : i.e. every one who commits a crime shall
be punished for it : or, accord- to As, one ought
not to punish for a crime, or an offence, any but
the committer thereof. (TA.) And Hassan Ibu-
Thábit says,
وَأَنْتَ دَّعِىُّ نِيطَ فِى آلِ هَاشِمٍ.
كَمَا نِبِطٌ خَلْفَ الرَّاكِبِ القَّدَحُ الفَرْدُ

[And thou art an adopted person, who is connected
with the family of Hashim, like as the single
drinking-cup is connected behind the rider]. (TA.)

which is suspended from a camel, ($,) being hung,
by its handles, from the saddle of the camel of
burden; (Az, TA ;) such, says Az, I have heard
thus called by the people of El-Bahreyn : (TA :)

(Az, K :) the former is pl. of b's in the general
sense first mentioned above ; and also signifies
what is suspended (boys, as in two copies of the $,
or 1,3, us in the TA) upon the camel when he is
loaded: (S, TA:) and iq. ◌ٌمُعَالِيق [things nus-
pended to a beast of burden; such as the 's
and the قربة and the ؟) .[مطهرة,K.) It is said
in a proverb عاط بغيرٍ أنْوَاط Taking [or reaching
to tahe] without there being there anything sus-
pended; which is like the saying " Driving by
singing without having a camel." ($, L, [See
إِنْ آعيا ,And iu another proverb ([.عطو .also art
If the camel be fatiqued, add] البَعِيرُ فَزِدْهُ نَوْطًا
thou to-him an appendage to his full load]: mean-
ing, if he be slow and inobsequious in his pace,
do not thou lighten his burden : (Ķ:) accord. to
Ag, إِنْ أَعْبَا فَزِدْهُ نَوْطًا is a proverh relating to the

size, (§,) which was worshipped in the time of
ignorance, said by IAth to be the name of a
particular gum-acacia-tree (8)") to which the
believers in a plurality of gods used to suspend
their weapons, and around which they used to
circuit. (TA.) - ◌ُالنَّوْطُ المُذَيْذِب occurs in a
trad. as meaning The leg of a rider, from fatigue
or some other cause, ever dangling, or moving
to and fro. (TA.)

قِرْبَة = of (عروة) The loop-shaped handle نِيَاط
[or water-skin] : (Msb:) the [appendage called]
She's [q.v.] of a bow; (§, Ķ;) by which it is
suspended : (K, vace ◌َخَطَم :) and of a قِرْبَة ; [by
which it is suspended; (see 1, second sentence ;)

Also ($, Msb [in the Ķ, " ar," which is evidently
a mistake,]) ◌ُالنِّيَاط [i.e. ◌ِنِيَاطُ القَلْب The nspensory
of the heart;] a vein, (S, Msb,) or a thick vein,
(K,) [app. the ascending aorta,] by which the
heart is suspended (Ş, Msb, K) from, (3, 8,
Mab [or possibly this may mean forming a part
of,]) or 20, (إلَى ,K,) the وَتِين, [which seems
here to signify the descending aorta, or, accord.

You say, ◌ِنَاصَ عَنِ الأَمْر He turned aside, or
away, from the thing, or affair ; he declined
from it; he avoided it; as also Joy. (Aboo-
Turah, TA.) And že JU, inf. n. 5, He
removed, withdrew, or retired to a distance, and
separated himself, from him, or it. (Ibn-'Abbád,
ويُنُوصُ .A,) or,؟) , نَاصَ عَنْ قِرْنِهِ K.) And
inf. n. ◌ٌنَوْص and ◌ٌ؟) ومَنَاص,) He fled, or turned
awoy and fled, from his opponent, or adversary,

And it is said in the Kur, [xxxviii. 2,] Sý,
meaning, When it was not a time of ,جبنٌ مَنّاصٍ

of drawing back and flecing: (S, TA :) or when
it was not a time of secking, or petitioning, and
of being aided, or succoured. (M, TA.)

Hence also the saying, " ◌ِرَّمَاهُ اللهُ بِالنَّيْط, meaning
[God smote him, or may God smite him, ] with
death. (S.) [See also art. bjs.] [Hence like-
wise, ] bill is applied to t Two stars [app. o and
Tof Scorpio ] between which is ◌ِقَلْبُ العَقْرَب [which
is the star and of that constellation]. (Sgh, Ķ,
TA.) __ Also, i.q. 31,11 [which generally means
The heart; but is probably here used in one of
its other senses, namely, the appendages of the
œesophagus, consisting of the liver and lungs and
heart]. (K.) __ Also, A certain rein lying
within the o [i.e. backbone, or back], beneath
the [portion of flesh and siner called the] .;
and so Visti: (K :) or the latter is a vein ex-
tending in, or along, the io, [in some copies of
the Ķ, is, which, as is said in the TA, is a
mistake, ] by the cutting of which the wine [or
person in whose belly is yellow water, as explained
in the TA,] is treated for the purpose of cure.
(S. K.) _ Sunt Lý : The far extent of the
desert : (TA :) or of the way thereof; as though
it were connected with another desert, (S, Ķ,)
hardly coming to an end. ($, TA.) [Thus,]
البَعِيدُ applied to the Hijhz, means , البَعِيدُ نِيَاطُهُ
All' +[i.e. Whereof every connected part, or
appendant tract, is for-extending]. (Ham, p.
101). The Rájiz, El-Ajjaj, says,

A certain bird, that lets down strings from a
tree, (Aş, Ş, Ķ,) and reaves its nest like an oil-
flask, suspended to those strings, (K,) then pro-
duces her young therein ; and hence its appella-
tion : (Aş, Ș:) a certain bird, like the anti in
blackness, [or rather in dinginess, ] that constructs
its nest between two twigs, or branches, or upon
one trig, or branch, making its nest long, so that
a man cannot reach its eggs until he introduces
his arm to the shoulder-joint : or, accord. to
Aboo-Alee, a certain bird, that suspends pieces
of the barh of trees [ formed into strings], and
makes its nest at their extremities, to protect
itself from serpents and men and )} [or young

called in Persian : (Kzw :) n. un. with a.

apparatus, &c., that are hung upon a horse.

and live among them, not being of their race;
and persons whose fathers are free men, or
Arabs, and whose mothers are slaves, and who
have become conjoined with the genuine and pure

being originally an inf. n .: or it may be an

the same parts, and, until within a few years, in
a lake on the north of Cairo, called Birket er-
Ratlee, whence I have twice procured roots of

c.] is a Persian word& نِيُلُوبَوْنْ and نِيلُويَرْ
(ec1), and is said to be composed of Ju, [or
indigo,] with which one dyes, and the name for
a wing, [i.e., > ;] as though " winged with Je
[or indigo];" because the leaf is as though its
two wings were dyed [with indigo] : (Msb:) the
plant so called is cold in the third degree, moist
in the second degree, emollient, good for cough
and for pains of the side and lungs and chest;
when its root, or lower part, (Lol,) is kneaded
with water, and used as a liniment, several times,
it removes the disease called 1; and when
kneaded with Coj, it removes the disease called
K, TA:) an excellent beverage is): دَاءَ التَّعْلَبِ
also prepared from it. (TA.) The imam Bedr-
ed-Deen Mudhaffar, son of the Kadee of Baala-
bekk, says, in his book entitled Suroor en-Nefs,
that it is of many species; whereof [one or more]
in Syria, used in perfume ; and a species in Egypt,
blue; and that its temperament is cold and moist
in the second degree; that the smelling it is useful
against hot diseases, and anxiety ; and its juice
in like manner; and that the beverage prepared
from it is useful as a remedy for cough and
roughness [of the throat] and pain of the side
and chest, and is a laxative. The author of the
Irshad and that of the Moojiz also mention, that
the beverage prepared from it is an exception
from other sweet beverages inasmuch as it does
not become converted into yellow bile, which is
wonderful; and its oil is more cold and moist
than that of violets; and there is no flower more
cold and moist than it. Er-Razce, too, says that
the smelling it is one of the causes of weakening
the generative faculty, and that the beverage is
one of the causes of stopping it; [for which pur-
pose, or as an antiaphrodisiac, it is used in the
present day by some of the women of Cairo;]
notwithstanding which, it rejoices the heart, and
is useful for palpitation of the heart. This art. is

not the date of the Flight itself, as some have
inagined, (for this took place on an uncertain
day, most probably the first or second, of the

seventh years were of thirteen lunar montlis

year commeneed the reckoning by common lunar

tables which have often been published for find-
ing the periods of commencement of years of the
Flight. We must not, however, rely upon the
exact accuracy of tliese tables : for the com-
mencement of the month was generally deter-
mined by actual observation of the new moon ;
not by calculation ; and we often find that a
year was commenced, according as the place
of observation was low or high, or to the east or
west of the place to which the calculation is
adapted, or according as the sky was obscure or
clear, a day luter or earlier than that which is
indicated in the tables ; and in some cases, even
two days later. The twelfth day of the third
month of the first year of the Flight, the day of
Mohammad's arrival at Ķubà, was Monday:
therefore the first day of the year was inost pro-
bably the nineteenth of April, as two months
of thirty days eaeli, or twenty-nine days eaelı,
seldom occur together. But the tenth day of
the first month of the sixty-first year, the day on
which El-Hoseyn was slain at Kerbela, was
Friday : therefore the first day of that year, at
that place, must have been Wednesday, the third
of October, A.D. 680; not the first of October, as
in most of the published tables above mentioned.
