both readings are mentioned by the relaters of
proverbs : [عثرت على الغزل app. signifies she
applied herself by chance to spinning :] the pro-
verh is applied to him who neglects & needful
business when it is possible, and seeks to accom-
plish it when it is beyond his reach : (Ķ :) its
origin is the fact, that a woman neglects spinning
while she finds that which she may spin, (of
cotton or flax &c., L,) until, when it is beyond
her reach, she seeks for refuse of wool among
sweepings and rubbish. (L, K.) __ Also, Palm-

pinched him, or it,] with the two fingers: (§:) or
it (a person's skin) with his fingers, so as to pain
him : (A :) or he tooh, or tooh hold of, it (a
man's fleshi) with his two fingers, so as to pain
him : (Ķ :) or he twisted round two fingers upon
it, namely, a thing ; or the extremities of the
fingers, only : (Mab :) or he scratched him, or it,
with his nails: and he pressed, or squeezed, or
pinched, him, or it, with the fingers, so as to

fingers : (Mgh, CK: [one of the explanations of

meaning It pinched him, or pained him,] said of

the ends of the fingers and the nails, and pour
upon it water, so as to remove it and the mark of

which much fresh is milked so that the acidity
goes away : but this is a mistake; for it is an
explanation, given by Sgli, of the epithet ,
occurring in a verse of Abu-n-Nejin, where it is
coupled with Jols. (TA.) It is said in a
proverb, ◌َعَدَا القَّارِصُ فَحَزّر :What was biting to
the tongue attained to an excessive degree, so that
it became acid: meaning, the affair, or case,
became distressing. (S.) __ [ Hence also, ] io,Ú
[for ◌ٌكْلِمَةٌ قَارِصَّة] { A saying that hurts; (S, M,
A ;) or that pains; (Msb;) or that troubles and
pains one (K," TA) lihe the pinching of the body :

in like manner, [or as signifying he cut it much,
or frequently, or repeatedly, ] you say, "263, (M,
TA,) inf. n. Jeff : (TA :) this is the primary
signification. (TA.) __ Hence, (TA,) said of a
rat, or mouse, (A'Obeyd, S, A, Mgh, Mab,) aor.
and inf. n. as above, (§," Msb, TA,) He [cut it
with his teeth; gnawed it; or] ate it; (Msb;)
namely a garment, or piece of cloth, (S, A, Mgh,
Msb, TA,) and bread, &c. (TA.) You say

returned it [to his mouth, to be chewed again, or

as Z says, from ◌ِالقَرْضُ فِى الأَرْض , meaning " the
traversing the land," like as aulas is from
TA;) and the form of the); الضَّرْبُ فِى الأَرْضِ
contract is what is shown by the following ex-
planation. (Ķ.) You say, dao,l, (S,A, Mgh,)
or ◌ِقَارَضْتُهُ مِنَ المَال , (Meb,) I gave to him
property ($, A, Mgh, Ķº) ii,Lai, (A, Mgh,)
[i. e.] that he might traffic with it, on the con-
dition that the gain should be between us, and the
loss should fall upon the property. (Ş, K. [See
ومُقَارَضَةً.K,) inf. n,؟) , قارضهُ - ([.ضَارَبَهُ also
(TA,) also signifies } He requited him ; he com-
pensated him; (S, Ķ ;) and so __ 3;3, ($, K,)
inf. n. 3. (TA.) Hence the saying of Abu-
إِنْ قَارَضْتَ النَّاسَ قَارَضُوكَ وَإِنْ (,l-Warda, (TA
تَرَكْتَهُمْ لَمْ يَتْرُكُوكَ وَإِنْ هَرَبْتَ مِنْهُمْ أَدْرَكُوا
!(A," TA) [If thou requite men their evil deeds,
they will requite thee ; and if thou leave them,
they will not leave thee; and if thou flee from
them, they will overtake thee]: meaning if thou
do evil to them, they will do the like thereof to
thee ; and if thou leave them, thou wilt not be
safe from them, for they will not let thee alone ;
and if thou revile them and injure them, they
will revile thee and injure thee : he said this in-
tending thereby to censure them : and it is from
the signification of " cutting." (TA.) [See also
, فُلَانْ يُقَارِضُ النَّاسَ ,below.] You Bay al80 , قَرْض
inf. n. Lo,le, $ Such a one accords, or agrees,
with men. (A.) And iJuin Loju 1[I inter-
changed visiting with him]. (A.)
4. Lò31 He cut off for him a portion, to be
requited, or compensated, for it. (Sgh, K.)
[And hence, ] He gave him, or granted him, a
Jejs [or loan, or the like]; (S, M, A," Mgb,"
K;) and Za,t signifies the same as de,3l. (L,
TA.) You say also, ◌َأقرضهُ المَال , (M, Myh,)
OMÈ), (M,) [He lent him the property, &c. ; ] he
gave him the property, &c., as a Joj; (M ;) he
gave him the property, [&c.,] to demand its
return. (Msb.) It is said in the Kur, [lxxiii.
lit. And lend ye to] وَأَقْرِضُوا اللهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا [,20
God a good loan; meaning t give ye to God
good service for which to be requited] : (§, TA :)
it is not here said Lots! because the simple subst.
[as distinguished from the inf. n.] is what is
meant. (TA.) And again, in the same, [ii. 246,
,مَنْ ذَا الَّذِى يُغْرِضُ اللهَ قْضًا حَسَنَّا [,11 .and lvii
meaning, accord. to Aboo-Is-hak the Gram-
marian, t [Who is he who will offer unto God] a
good action or gift, or anything for which a
requital may be sought? or, as Akh says, + Who
will do a good action by following and obeying the
command of God? (TA.) The Arabs suy,
Thou hast done to me a+ قَدْ أَقْرَضْتَنِى قَرْضًا حَسَنَا
good deed [which I am bound to requite]. (TA.)
أَقْرِضْ عِرْضَكَ لِيَوْمٍ فَقْرِكَ ,.And it is said in a trad
t [Lend thou thine honour for the day of thy
poverty]; meaning, when a man defames thee, do
not thou requite him, but reserve his recompense
undiminished for thee, as a loan for the payment
of which he is responsible, that thou mayest
receive it from him in the day of thy need there-
of: (TA:) [but see voss.]- [And hence,]
.Ile gave, or paul, to me the thing أَقْرَضَنِى الشَّىْء
مَا عَلَيْهِ مَا يُقْرِضُ عَنْهُ العُيُونَ فَيْتُرُهُ = (.M)

anay, from him the eyes, and cover him]. (Ibn-

El-Hasan El-Bagree, being asked whether the
companions of the Apostle of God used to jest, or
joke, answered, (TA,) ◌َنَّعَمْ وَيَتَّقَا رَضُون ، (K,* TA,)
i. e. Yes, and they used to recite poetry [one to
another] :(TA:) from تَرِيض as signifying
" poetry." (Ķ.)
They passed away, or perished, [as + انقرضوا .7
though cut off,] ($, K,) all of them, (K,) not one
of them remaining ; ($ ;) as also los [perhaps
a mistake for lg b3 : see 1]. (TA.)

I sought, or demanded, of him the gift, or pay-
ment [in advance], of the thing. (M.)

given in other works;] but what is due to the
one from the other as a debt is not so called;

(Mgh, [see 25 ;]) what one gives, (S, M$b, Ķ,) | like ,,., (Msb,) [ A species of weasel ; ] a certain
to another, (Mab,) of property, ($, Msb,) to
receive it bach, ($, Ķ,) or to demand it back :
small beast (4,253), (S, M, Møb,) called in
Persian &5, (S, Msb,) or "J5, (as in one copy of
the $.) whence the arabicized word 35, (Msb,)
which kills pigeons, (S, M, A,) seizing upon their
throats, and it is a species of rat; (A;) the long-
backed quadruped that kills pigeons : (Ltli, O,
Msb:) this last explanation is given by the author
of the Bari', after saying that it is a small beast
(ss), like the cat, which is in houses, and, when
angry, gnaws clothes: (Msb:) accord. to some,
i.g. النمس [q٠٧٠] :(MEb:) pl. ◌ٍبَنَاتٌ مِقْرَض . (A,

(Mab:) or a thing that one gives to be requited for
it, or to receive it back : (TA in art. Jo' :) or a
thing of which men demand the payment [or
restitution], one of another : (M, L:) or a thing
which a man gives, or t does, to be requited for

returns [to his mouth, to be chewed again, or to

(Ș:) or it is applied to the cud (o) of the camel,
and signifies chewed : or, accord. to Kr, this
is قَرِيض ,with ف. (M.) And hence, accord. to
some, the saying حَالَ الجَرِيضُ دُونَ القَرِيض [ex-
plained in art. Joy.]: but accord. to others, the
last word in this saying has the signification next
but one following. (S.)= The sound, or voice,
of a man in dying. (Er-Riyashee, in TA, art.
Poetry : (S, M, A, Meb, K :) so 1= (.جرض
called for one or another of the reasons mentioned

of silver; and of a garment, or piece of cloth,
which & tailor cuts with his shears; (TA;)
and of this last, and of bread, (JK, TA,) &c.,
(TA,) by the gnawing (Je,5) of a rat, or mouse:
(JK, A, Mgh, TA:) pl. "قُرّاضات .(TA.) -
[Hence,] ◌ِأَخَذَ الأَمْرَ بِقُرَاضَتِه t He took the thing,
or affair, in its fresh state. (M, L.) __ [Hence
also,] ◌ِقُرَاضَةُ المَال + [The refuse, or] what is bad,
vile, paltry, or of no account, of property. (TA.)
also relates to an evil action, and an قَرَاضَة -
evil saying, which one man directs against

together, you do not say Jolie, as the vulgar

with ◌ِجَلَمَان [a pair of shears]; & word, accord.
to the lexicologists having no sing .; but Sb
mentions مقْراض, thus using the sing. form : (M:)
or ◌ْمِتْرَاض and ◌ٍمِقْرَاضَان signify the same; [a pair
of shears;] like ◌ْجَلّم and ◌ِجَلَمَان, and ◌ْقَلَّم and
signifies مِقْرَاضْ or (: جلم .Meb in art): قَلَّمَانِ
a small pair of shears; i. e. a pair of] جَلّمْ صَغِيرٌ
scissors]: (JK :) 'Adee Ibn-Zeyd uses the expres-
sion شَغْرَتًا مِقْرَاض [the two blades of a pair of
shears or scissors] in a poem ; (IB;) and other
,مغراص TA :) and): مقراض ,.poets use the sing
with and Jo, signifies the same. (IB.) Hence
the saying, ◌ِبِسَانُ قْلَانِ مِقْرَاضُ الأَعْرَاض :[The
tongue of such a one is the detractor of reputations].

He adorned the girl, or young woman with the
[ornament called] b;3. ($, Ķ.) A rájiz says,
addressing his wife, ($, TA,) who had asked him
to adorn her with a pair of ornaments of the kind
so called, (TA,)
قَرَّطَكِ اَللهُ عَلَى العَيْنَيْنِ
عَقَارِبًا سُودًا وَأَرْقَمَيْنِ

قرّط المفرّسَ (,Hence, (TA _ [. شنّفَ verb voce
: He put, or threw, the bridle (s) upon the
horse's head ; ($, TA ;) this is what is meant by
the explanation YoJi in the K: (TA:) or he
placed the horse's reins behind his ears, in putting
the bridle on his head: (Sgli, K:") or it has the
former of the meanings explained ubove, and also
signifies, he (the rider) stretched forth his hand so
as to put it upon the back of the horse's head, upon
the place where the lie is tied, while the horse
was running : (IDrd:) or he incited the horse to
the most vehement running; (TA, and so in the
CK, excepting that Just is there put in this
instance in the place of الفرس ;) because, when
his running is vehement, the rein is extended
upon the ear, and so becomes like the b,3: accord.
to the A, ◌ُقرّط الفَرَسَ عِنَانَه mcans t he slackened the
horse's rein so that it fell upon, or against, the
part behind the eur, the place of the bjs, in urging
him to run. (TA.) __ And hence, (A,) 20,5
y,"; ] 1 I hastened to him a messenger : (Ibn-
'Abbad, TA:) or I dismissed (lit. flung) in haste
to him a messenger : a phrase doubly tropical.

vulgar to signify the act of ;notifying: and
¿desiring to hasten : and Istraitening : and icon-
firming, or corroborating, in an affair or a com-
mand : in all which senses it is trebly tropical.

the ear : (TA:) pl. [of pauc. ] ilgi ( Mgh, Msb)

in a proverb, ◌ًخُدْهُ وَلَوْ بِقُرْطَى مَارِيّة [Take thou ity
although by means of giving for it the two ear-
rings of Mariyeh]; (TA, S, K, in art. LSy. ; ) i. e.,
take thou it at all events : (Ķ in art. (S):) this
Máriyeh, respecting whom authors differ, was the
first Arab woman who wore ear-rings, and her
ear-rings are said to have been of great value.

1,5, accord. to some, (Msb,) The leaves of the
[mimosa fiava], (Lth, S, Mgh, Ķ,) with
which they tan; (Lth, S, Mgh;) but this asser-
tion is [said to be] inaccurate; for the leaves are
called L., and camels are fed with them, and
they are not used for tanning: some say, that it
is a kind of tree; but this also is inaccurate ; for
one says, " I plucked, or gathered, 13;" and
trees are not plucked, or gathered: (Meb:) AHIn
[contradicts this, however, for he applies this
word to a kind of tree, and] says, it is the best of
things with which hides are tanned in the land of
the Arabs; and these are tanned with its leaves
and its fruit : [the pods of the han, which is also
called 1;,3, are used for tanning;] and in one
place he says, it is a large kind of trees, having
,شوك app. a mistranscription for] سوق) thich stems
thorns, ]) resembling the walnut-tree, [in the Mgh,
evidently from the same source, " or, as some say,
a large kind of trees, having thick thorns (3),2),
resembling the walnut-tree,"] the leaves of which
are smaller than those of the apple-tree, and it has
grains which are put into balances [for weights,
like as are those of the carob-tree]: it grows in

the L [mimosa Nilotica, also called acacia

correctly speaking, it is [the fruit, or seed with its
pericarp, of that tree ;] a well-hnown grain, which
comes forth in envelopes, like lentils, from the trees

Qui [acacia, i. e. succus acacia]; (K;) which is

Lfl,] and has an acrid property; the best
thereof is that which is sweet in odour, heavy, hard,
and green; and it strengthens relaxed members,
when cooked in water, and poured upon them :

K;) with the ◌ّ٧٠ ٩٠ ,منقّص: (A,K:) as also
(:M): قَصّاه ,M, A,) and, by permutation), قصّصه٢ُ
or these two forms have an intensive signification:

pursuit. (TA.) And it is said in the Kur,
[xviii. 03,] (؟) فَأَرْتَدَّا عَلَى آثَارِهِمَا قَصْصًا (,؟,K)
And they both returned by the way by which they
had come, retracing their footsteps. (Ķ, TA.)

he related the tradition, or story, in its proper

followed its traces, in pursuit, and related it ac-
cordingly : (TA :) [i. e., he pursued the course of
the tradition, or story:] and ◌َتقصّص ٢ الخَبَر he pur-
sued, or sought after, the particulars of the news,
or information, gradually, and deliberately. (M.)
Ja is also said to signify He recited, or delivered,
a [discourse such as is termed] aga2. (TA.)

(TA,) The phrase ◌ِقُوصَ زَيْدٌ مَا عَلَيْه has been
mentioned; and means, in my opinion, +Zeyd
was reckoned with for what he oned: though
made trans. without a particle, as implying the
meaning of spel and the like. (M, TA.)

(M ;) as also اقتصّه; (A; [so in a copy of that
work; but I think it is a mistake for well, or for

by wounding the latter like as he had wounded the
former, (S, Mab, K,) or by slaying the latter for

(TA.) - ◌ِاقصّ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ نَفْسِه The man gate
power, or authority, to retaliate upou himself,
(Ķ, TA,) by doing to him the like of that which
he had done, whether it be slaughter or mutilation
or beating or wounding. (TA.) [Whence the
saying,] ◌َأَقْصَصْتُكَ الجُرْحَة !I authorize thee to
adduce anything whereby to invalidate the testi-

فَقَدْ أَقْصَصْتَ أُمَّكَ بِالْهُزّالِ

meaning, Thou hast made thy mother to be near

قَصِّهُ مِنَ المَوْتِ in the L and TA] أَقْصَّهُ المَوتُ and
and i Lati, which seems to be a mistranscrip-
tion,] both signifying Death became near to him :

then escaped; (TA;) and so ◌ٌأَقَصَّتْهُ شَعُوب :(M:)
and ◌ِأَقَصِّ على المَوْت he became at the point of
death. (M.)

A poet says,

صُ حُكْمًا وَعَدْلًا عَلَى الْمُشْلِمِينَا
[And me sought retaliation so as to make a party
quit, or even, with us; for people's making them-
selves quits, or even, one with another, by retalia-
tion, is a statute, and an act of justice, appointed
to the Muslims] : in which التَّقَاص is an instance
of a deviation from a general rule, as it presents
two quiescent letters together in poetry; where-
: القصّاص ,fore some relate it differently, saying
and there is no other instance of the kind ex-
cepting one verse cited by Akh :
وَلَوْلًا خِدَاشْ أَخَذْتُ دَوَاب
.
بَ سَعْدٍ وَلَّمْ أَعْطِهِ مَا عَلَيْهَا
.
but Aboo-Is-hák thinks, that, if this verse be
genuine, the right reading is دَوَايِبَ سَعْد, as the
making the duplication of a letter distinct is allow-
able in poetry ; or رَوَاحِلَ سَعْد . (M, TA.) This isthe
primary signification of the verb. (TA.)_ And
hence, (A," Mglı," TA,) [or, accord. to Fei, the
reverse is the case, (see 3,)] [They made them-
selves quits, or even, one with another, in a
reckoning, (§, A, Mgh, K,) or other thing (S,
A, K) one withholding from another the like of
what the latter owed him. (Mgh.)

for such a one upon such a one, by wounding the
latter like as he had wounded the former, or by
slaying the latter for the slaughter of the former,

And "ُأَقَصَّه , inf. n. ◌ٌإِقْصَاص, signifies [also] He

though I do not see how this can be asserted, for
one may certuinly say ◌ُأُقْتُصَ مِنْه ,] also signifies

the breast : (Lth, TA:) pl. قصاص [a reg- pl. of
هُوَ الْزَّمُ لَك ,the first]. (K.) Hence the saying
هُوَ أَلْزَمُ بِكَ مِنْ شَعْرَاتٍ or ((؟) ,مِنْ شُعَبْرَاتٍ فَصِّلاً

adherent to thee than the little hairs, or the hairs,
of thy breast, &c .: ] because as often as they are

his relation : and also to him who denies a due

sugar is made] is expressed; and this expressed
قَصَبُ - (.Mgh). عَسَلُ القَصْبِ juice is called
قَصْبُ is Calamus aromaticus ; also called] الذّرِيرَةِ
il] : a species thereof has the joints near to-
gether, and breaks into many fragments, or
splinters, and the internodial portions thereof are
filled with a substance like spiders' webs : when
chemed, it has an acrid taste, and it is aromatic
(Mgh, Mab) when brayed, or powdered; (Mgh ;)

was applied also to the expeditious, quick, and

trad. of Sa'eed Ibn-El-As, that he measured the
horse-course with the cane, making it to be a
hundred canes in length, and the cane was stuck
upright in the ground at the goal, and he who
was first in arriving at it took it, and was en-

measure of length, used in measuring race-courses,
was also used in other cases, in measuring land,
and differed in different countries and in different

the announcement of ] a pavilion [in Paradise]
of brilliant pearls, &c .: (IAar, O:) or the mean-
ing is, of hollow pearls [or pearl], spacious, like

Abu-1-Lahham Eth-Thaalebee says,
عَلَّى الحَكْمِ الَّأْتِّ يَوْمًا إِذَا قَضَى

(S, L) meaning, It is encumbent on the judge who
is come to, any day, when he decides his case, that
he do not deviate from what is right, but (35)
act with justice, or equity. (IB, L.) Akh says,
He means ◌ّوَيَنْبَغِى أَنْ يَقْصِد ; but as he makes an
ellipsis, and puts sais in the place, syntac-
tically, of sie, he makes it marfoon, because it
has the place of that which is [ virtually] marfoon:
and Fr says, he makes it marfooa because of the
disagreement ; for as its meaning disagrees with
that of the preceding verb, it is made to disagree
