فَتَامى but let him may ,أمَتِى and عَبْدِى of you say
and فَتَّاتِى :(T, Mgh:) - and Generous, honour-
able, liberal, or bountiful : (S, Ķ :) [mostly used
as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. pre-
dominates; meaning a generous man : ] a possessor
لَا فَتَّى إِلَا عَلِىّ ,hence the saying: [٩٠٧٠] فُتُوّة of
[There is no one endowed with generosity but, or

which wine is measured; (TA;) tropically thus

Mgh, Msb;) applied to a camel, (T,) or to a
beast, (S, Mgh, Msb,) or to anything [i. e. to a
beast and to a human being]; (M, Ķ;) or it is
like [which is applied peculiarly to a human
be ng], but is sometimes applied to a camel : (M :)
[this last statement, however, requires confirma-
tion, which I have not been able to find: the
epithet is generally known as applied only to a

One says, ◌ِمَالَ إِلَى الجَهْلِ وَالفُتُوَّة [He inclined to
ignorant, or foolish, or silly, and youthful, con-
duct]. (S in art. yo). .. And Generosity, honour-
ableness, liberality, or bountifulness : ($, Ķ, TA :)
used as meaning thus in [treatises on] the law ;
but not occurring in the Sunneh nor in the Scrip-
ture [i. e. the Kur-án] : the earliest mentioner
thereof was Jaafar Eg-Sadik. (TA.)

. [الفَتِىّ or الفَتَّى.i.e] الفتى years, or age]:from

or thick, resembling the bread that is baked in hot
ashes [which is generally made in the form of
thick round cakes]: ($, O:) a grain resembling
[the species of millet called] Jste, which is made

grain, which the Arabs of the desert take, in the

times of hunger, and pound, or bruise, and make
into bread; and it is a bad kind of food, but
sometimes, or often, they are content with it for
days : (T:) or, as some say, it is [a plant] of the
species called Jens, growing in salt lands, of the
[plants termed] حُمُوض [pl. of حَمَّض], of which
bread is made : [a coll. gen. n .: ] n. un. 25: (Th,
M :) Aboo-Ziyad El-Kilábee says, the E3, like
the دعاع, is a herb (بَقْلَة) in which comes forth
grain, and each of them spreads [ upon the ground],
not growing up high; and when they become dry,
the people collect what is dry thereof, then pound,
or bruise, it, and winnow it, and take forth from
it a sort of black grain, with which they fill sachs,
and lade the camels : it is a blach sort of grain
like the jeive [q. v.], and they make bread of it,
and make 0): (يَعْتَصِدُونَ) عَصِيدَة:) in the Bari'
it is said to be a species of tree or plant ("2)
growing in the plain, or soft, lands, and on the
[eminences called] Alei, having a sort of grain
like the on [or chick-peas], of which are made
bread and تسويق . (Meb.)-And accord, to
IP, ◌ْالفَث signifies The هَبِيد, (O, Meb,) meaning
the pulp of the colocynth, ◌ِ02) وشَّحْمُ الحَنْظَل) or
the colocynth-plant, ◌ِشَجَرُ الحَنْظَل .(Meb: and
this is one of the meanings assigned to Sin in
the K. [In the TH, ◌ِشَحْمُ الحَنَظَل is said to be
the correct explanation : but from what will be
seen voce Jech, I think it most probable that the
right meaning is The seeds of the colocynth. ]) _
IF also says that it signifies The Jens [i. c. shoot,
or shoots, of the palm-tree,] which is, or are,
plucked forth [ entire, ] from the base thereof. (O.)

like 34: (Kr, M :) or dates that are separate,
each one from others; not stiching together; (T,

Multitude was found to be] وُجِدَ بِبْنِى فُلانٍ مَعَتَّةْ
attributable to the sons of such a one] when they
were numbered : (T, O:) and affe signifies the

-mcan , مَا رَأَيْنَا جُلَّةً أَكْثَرَ مَفَنَّهُ مِنْهَا ,one says [: نُزُلْ

i.e. Abundant in respect] كَثِيرُ نُزُلٍ means مُفَتَّةِ

gives the latter reading ; and so, therefore, does
the TK, which explains it as meaning " increase,"
and adds that one says طعام كثير مفثة, an ex.
app. without any authority ; for what I have
cited from the T and O shows, I think, that the
former reading, and not the latter, is unquestion-
ably right.])

Arabs is The making an opening, or interval,
thus it means with the vulgar: (Lth, T, Z, O:)
or a Sly' [or table upon which food is eaten],
made of marble, (Ltlı, T, S, M, O, Ķ,) by the
people of Syria, who thus call it, (Lth, T, O,) or
of xilrer, (T, S, M,) and the like, (§,) or of gold :
(M, Ķ:) or of any kind accord. to some : (TA :)
or a pl [q. v.] of silver, (T, Nh, TA,) or of gold :
(Nh, TA:) [but this seems to be virtually a repe-

„SU is a word of the people of Syria and El-
Jezcereh : (M :) and it signifies ($, O, L) in the

excess] there mentioned is the women's going
out without permission : (Mgh, Msb:) or their
using foul language against their husband's rela-
tions, by reason of the sharpness of their tongues.

fies Niggardliness, tenaciousness, or avarice, (A,
K,) in the payment of the poor-rate : or the

cake of bread, or lump of dough, a place in the
fire; (TA;) or a place in the hot ashes, or in
the fire, to put it therein [ for the purpose of
baking, or toasting, it]. (L in art. JU.) [Js
is often used intransitively as meaning He made,
or scraped, a hollow in the ground, &c .; and so
فَحَصَ (,And sometimes they said, (S [.تفحّص ٢
Si hal The rain turned over the dust, or
earth, (S, A, K,) and removed one part thereof
from another, (A, TA,) mahing it lihe the gogo si :
(TA:) and in like manner, Jos JI the pebbles :
(A:) this is when it falls vehemently. (TA.) __
Jans also signifies He (a gazelle) ran vehemently
[app. so as to dig up the ground with his feet];
but the word more known is Jon .: (TA :) and
he (a man) hastened, or rent quickly. (K.) You
Bay, ◌ُمَرَّ قُلاَنْ يَفْحَص Such a one passed along
hastening, or going quichly. (TA.) And it is
said in a trad. of Kuss, وَلَا سَمِعْتُ فَحْصًا Nor did
I hear the falling of a foot, or the sound of walk-
ing. (TA.) - You say also, فَحَصَ الصبى ,mean-
ing, t The child had his central incisors in a
mabbling state: (K :) [nearly syn. with , and
still more so with ◌َاحْفَر.] .- And فَحْص also sig-
nifies The spreading [a thing] out or open; lay
ing [it] open ; exposing or uncovering or discover-

him in their ordinary clothing, not having adorned
themselves; [in consideration of his simple habits;]
self-adornment being an affair of females and of

when seeing such a man, of the Arabs : (O, Ķ,
TA :) so Lth was told, and thus he has expl. the
word, after saying that he errs who says
app. meaning We sought, or] فَهْلًا لِدَوَابِنَا
demanded, a stallion for our beasts]. (O, TA.)
فحّال The palim-tree became a استفحلت النَّعْلَةُ -
[or tree of which the spadix might be used for

a stallion : generally,] a male [or stallion] camel :
(MA :) pl. [of mult.] ◌ْفُحُول (S, Mgh, O, Msb,
*) and ◌ْفحّال (S, Mgb, K) and ◌ٌفُحُولَة (Mgh, 0,
Mob, Ķ) and žil + ($, O, K) and [pl. of pauc.]
signifies the same as فَحِيلٌ ٢ K :) and): أَفْحُلْ
of فَحْل Kr, TA;) and [particularly] a) ; فَحْلٌ
the camels. (S, O, TA.) _ Hence ◌ُالفَحْل is an
appellation of i Canopus (Jer"); because it is
aloof from the other stars, like the Jos which,
when he has covered, goes aloof from the [she-]
camels : (Ş, O, Ķ, TA :) or, as some say, it is
رَجُل ـ (.po called because of its greatness. (TA
-i. e. t A mas] فحل means the same as فَحِيلٌ *
culine, as opposed to an effeminate, man]. (K.)
And " ◌ًامْرَاةٌ فَحْلَة means + A clamorous [or, app.,
فُخُولُ الشُّعَرَآء - (masruline] woman. (S, O,K

in satirizing, those who have vied with them therein;

poet, is judged to have excelled him [is called a

الفَحْلَ Ibn-'Abadch; (TA;) who was surnamed
because he took to wife Umm-Jundab when Imra-
el-Keys divorced her on the occasion of her judg-
ing him [i. e. 'Alkameh] to have overcome him

al's The quality, or state, of being a Jos [or
male ; and particularly, of being a stallion : and
also + masculineness, as a quality of a man, opposed

nify the same. (K) [Hence,] بَعِيرٌ ذُو فِحْلَة A
camel fit, or meet, for being chosen as a stallion.

meaning is We contended with you in satirizing

[فَدَعَ "app. an inf. n. of which the verb is] قَدْعٌ
A breaking, or crushing, syn. ¿ [q. v.]: and a
slight splitting or cleaving or slitting. (TA.)

walking upon the back [i. e. the upper surface] of
the foot [from an explanation of guil by IApr,
mentioned in the Mgh and O and Msb and TA ;
but it seems rather to mean a distortion of the
foot that occasions the so walking]: (K : [see also
":]) or height of the hollow part of the sole of
the foot, such that if the person trod upon a
sparrow it would not hurt it [from an explanation
-of guil by Ag, mentioned in the O]: (K, TA :)

deflection between the foot and the shank-bone, (O,

of the [inner] ankle-bones, and a wide separation

state in which one sees the animal to tread upon
the part between the phalanges of his foot, so that
the fore part of his foot becomes raised ; (ISh, O,
Ķ, TA;) and it is nought but a rigidity in the
pastern [that occasions this]. (ISh, O, TA.)
Less The place of what is termed ess, ($, O,
Msb,) in the wrist or ankle-joint. (Ş, Msb.)

[in which it is implied that this is the primary

nifies A certain commonly-hnown quantity [of
land]; (IAar, TA;) said by Abu-1-Hasan Eg-
Șikillee to signify a limited portion of land, sub-
divided into four and twenty keeráts; (TA;)
[loosely reckoned as the quantity of land which a
yoke of oxen will plough in one day ; thus corre-
sponding to the Latin term jugerum, and our acre;
and commonly defined as consisting of 333 kasa-
bchs (or rods) and one third; (the kaşabeli being
24 kubdahs ; and the kabdah being the measure
of a man's fist with the thumb erect, or about 6
iuches and a quarter;) but different in different
times and in different parts of the same country :
hence, perliaps,] it is also expl. as signifying a
place of sced-produce. (M, TA.)
أَصْحَابُ الفَدَادِينَ is said to signify الفَدَّادُونَ
[The possessors of ploughing oxen] ; like as St.
signifies " possessors of camels :" but it has been
otherwise expl. in [its proper place, as pl. of SIJ3,
in] art. si. (K.)

El-Asghar] is related to have said that this is not
allowable except by poetic license, and El-Kálee
says that الغدّى was used by the Arabs in con-
[,حمى .in art ,حيّاء see] , الحمّى junction with
but other forms were used in other cases [aniong
which he seems to mention aiss, with fet-h and
the lengthened alif, but the words in which I find
this expressed are somewhat ambiguous, and are
also rendered doubtful by an erasure and an
alteration]; (TA;) and Yolsesl, (M,) [whence
an ex. in a verse which will be found in what
follows,] or افتدى ٢ به (K, TA) and ومِنْه (TA))
[but I do not know smil in either of these
phrases as having any other than the well-known
meaning of ◌ُقَدَى نَفْسَه, which is strangely omitted
in the K; ] and Volali, (S, Mgh, Msb, Ķ, TA,)
inf. n. alsus and fijs; (Msb, TA ;) but some
explain this differently [as will be shown in what
follows]; (T, Mgh, Mab, TA ;) He gave his
ransom ; (Ş;) he gave a thing, (K, TA, Leusci in
the CK being a mistake for fact, without the
affixed pronoun,]) or a captive, for him, (TA,)
and so liberated him ; (K, TA ;) [i. e. he ran-
somed him ;] or he liberated him, or ransomed
him, ◌ِمِنَ الأَسْر [from captivity] : (Mgh, Mab:)
or Valsts signifies he loosed him, or set him free,
and took his ransom : (Mgh, Msb, TA :) or alsus
signifies the giving a man and taking a man [in
exchange]: and fiss, [as inf. n. of elas,] the pur-
chasing him [from captivity or the like] : (Mbr,
T, Mgh, Mab, TA:) or the preserving a man
from misfortune by what one gives by way of
compensation for him ; as also Sus : (Er-Raghib,
TA:) you say, قَدَيْتُهُ بِمَالِى I purchased [i. e. ran-
somed] him with my property, and My with
myself : (T:) or, accord. to Nuseyr Er-Rázee,
the Arabs say, ◌َفَادَيْتُ الأَسِير [I ransomed the
captive], and قَدَيْتُهُ بِأَبِى وَأَمِّى [I ransomed him
in a tropical sense with my father and my mother],
and J'y [with property/], as though thou pur-
clasedst him and freedst him therewith, when he
was not a captive; and you may say, 225%
Syl meaning I freed the captire from the state
in which he was, though 245G is better in this
sense : as to the reading , [in the Kur ii.
79], Aboo-Mo'adh says, it means Ye purchase
them from the enemy and liberate them; but the
reading suf, he says, means ye contend with
them who are in your hands respecting the price
and they so contend with you : (T, TA :) [that
is shown by what here قدis syn. with ol افتداهُ !

assuredly I would ransom him with what minds
would not be willing to relinquish]. (M, TA.) __
[The inf. ns. of the first of these verbs are much
فَدِّى لَكَ ,used in precative phrases :] they said
[for قَدَ الاَ قَدَّى, and therefore virtually meaning
Mayest thou be ransomed; the J being نُدِيتَ
i.e. " for the purpose of notifying" the لِلتَّبْبِينٍ
person addressed]: (TA:) and فَدِّى لَكَ أَبِى [for
and therefore virtually ,فَدَاكَ أَبِى بِنَفْسِهِ قَدْى
meaning simply ◌ِفَدَاكَ أَبِى بِنَفْسِه May my father
ransom thee with himself ; so that it may be well
rendered may my father be a ransom for thee]:

pronounce with kesr [to the ., i. e. they pronounce
Jis with the tenween of kesr], peculiarly when it
is next to [meaning immediately followed by] the
preposition J, saying Jú ;iss, because it is in-

of a prayer; and As has cited [as an ex. thereof]
the saying of En-Nabighah [ Edli-Dhubyanee],

an indeterminate imperative verbal noun such
as صه in the phrase ◌ٌصّه يَا رَجُل, which is as
though one said ◌ٌأُسْكُتْ سُكُوتًا يَا رَجُل ;thus mean-
ing here ◌َليّنْدِك : but De Sacy mentions, in his
" Chrest. Arabe," sec. ed., vol. ii., p. 460, three
allowable readings (not the foregoing reading) in
this verse, namely, fus and aus and Jad; and
adds that what here follows is said by a commen-
tator to be, of several explanations, that which is
والقول الآخر وهو الصحيح ان فداً بمعنى : the right
ليُفِدِك فبناه كما بنى الأمر وكذلك تّراكِ ودَراكٍ لانه
this, it will be observed, is: بمعنى اترك وادرك
similar to the explanation which I have offered
of فِدَاءٍ لك ;for ليُفدك is app. a typographical
mistake for ليغدا : and I incline to think that
Jus, though supposed to be correct and therefore
likened to Dij and els, is a mistake of a copyist
for plus ; and the more so because I find in Ahl-
wardt's " Divans of the Six Ancient Arabic
Poets" the three readings "las and #lai and glass,
but not ؟؟). [فِداء,TA.) - وَقَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِئْج [in the
Kur xxxvii. 107] means And we made an animal
prepared for sacrifice to be a ransom for him, and
freed him from slaughter. (T, TA.) _35

,is the appellation of A class, or sect الفِدَاوِيَّةُ
of the خَوَارِج of the دُرْزِيَّة [or دُرُوز, whom we call
the Druses; it is a coll. gen. n., of which the
n. un. is ◌ّقِدّاوِى ; the و being a substitute for s :
it is used to signify those who undertake perilous
adventures, more particularly for the destruction
of enemies of their party ; as though they offered
themselves as ransoms or victims ; and hence it is
applied to the sect called in our histories of the
Crusades " The Assassins"]. (TA.)
بنّفْسِى In the saying. مَقْدُوىْ originally ,مَقْدِىٌّ]
With my soul, or myself, may such a فُلَانْ مَقْدِى
one be ransomed, Ssis is often snppressed ; being
meant to be understood.]

state indicates his internal qualities; (Meyd, O,
Ķ;) meaning that one knows his excellence from
his عين [i. e. aspect] like as one knows the age
of a beast by examining luis teeth ; (TA;) his
external appearance rendering it needless for thee
to test him, (S, Meyd, O, Ķ,) and to examine
his teeth : (S, O, K :) and [with the (أَنْ تَفُرَّ)
same meaning] one says, قَرَّ الجَوَادِ عَيْنه :(A, TA:)
and [in like manner] ◌ُالشَّبِيثُ عَيْنُهُ فِرَارُه [The bad,
his aspect &c.]; (Meyd, O, TA ;) i. e. thou know-
est his badness by his See when thou seest him.
(TA.) And one says also, ◌ِقَرَّرْتُ قَمَ الفَرَس I
,وقَّ عَنْ أَسْنَانِ الدَّابَّة his age. (Har p. 28.) And
aor. ; , He examined the teeth of the beast. (Har
p. 233.) [Hence the saying of El-Hajjaj, S,
[And [hence also [.زكو .expl. in art ,عَنْ ذَكَاءٍ
one says, فَرَهُ عَنْ أَشْيَاء } Ile examined him respect-
ing things. (O,*TA.) And ◌َفَرّ الأَمْر , (M, TA,)
and ◌ِ؟) , فَّ عَنِ الأَمْر, M, O, K, TA,) ! He exa-
mined, looked into, scrutinized, or investigated, the
affair; searched into it ; inquired, or sought in-
formation, respecting it. (S, M, O, Ķ, TA.) And
Such a one interrogated me! فَّفُلَانْ عَمَّا فِى نَفْسِى
in order that he might know, from what I should

in a trad. that the Prophet said to 'Adee the son
مَا يُفِرُّكَ عَنِ الإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ يُقَالَ لَا إِلَّهَ إلّ ,of Hatim
(T, M, O, TA) i. e. Nothing induces thee to
flee from El-Islam except the saying " There is
no deity but God :" many of the relaters say
JÄ; but Az says that the former is the right.
(TA.)_ Hence the saying, ◌ُافرّ اللهُ يَدَه God
made, or may God make, his arm, or hand, to
fall off; like أَطَرَّهَا and أَتَرَّهَا ،((.) - And

The people, or party, fell into confusion and diffi-

one says, ◌ِإنَّهَا لَحَسَنَةُ الفِرَة [Verily she is beautiful

(T, M) signify the lamb when it is weaned, (T,
M,) and has become what is termed je [q. v.],
and obtained plenty of herbage, (M,) and has
become fat : (T, M :) accord. to Ibn-'Abbad, (O,)
the last two signify u lamb (Jon, O, TA, in the
Ķ Jo, a mistranscription, TA) when it eats,
and chens the cud: (O, K : [see also >>>>> below : ])
and [it is also said that] jis signifies great or!
[app. as meaning lambs or kids], and one thereof

[The leaping of the wild calf, or with equal pro-
priety ,l,ill may be here rendered the kid, excited
to lighiness the other wild calf, or kid]: (T, §, O,
K:) A'Obeyd says, on the authority of El-Mu-
ärrij, [and so says Meyd, and the same is implied
in the $ and O,] that ,1,il here means the young
one of the wild con : (T:) i.e., when the Jls
attains to youtliful vigour it takes to leaping,
and when another sees it [do so] it leaps in like
manner: (T, S, Ķ :) the prov. is used in relation
to lim of wliose companionship one should be
cautious ; meaning, if thou become his companion
thou wilt do as lie does: (T, O, Ķ :) some relate
.نَوَا نَزْوَ الفُرَّارِ meaning , نَزْوَ it otherwise, Buying

meaning Wout to fice from that which indutes
