The above explanation is incomplete : it means
the bridle, or headstall and reins, with the bit
and other appurtenances ; like its Persian origi-

iron in the mouth of the horse : thus, by exten-
sion, applied to this with its thongs, or straps,
and apparatus : it comprises the a, which
is the transverse piece of iron in the mouth; and
the wu, which is the piece of iron standing up
in the mouth; and the Jeme, which is the iron
beneath the زحنك and the ◌ٍخُطّافَان, which are two
,شكيمة and the مسحل bent pieces of iron in the
on the right and left; and the قَرَاشَتَان, which
are two pieces of iron wherewith are fastened

when quiescent, after fet-hah, towards the sound
of 5; so that the fet-hah, with that I, composes
a sound the same as that of the long " c" in the
English word " there." This is accordlant with
present usage; and I have not found any learned
