(K,) A mode of bargaining, which consists in
saying, When thou feelest, or touchest, my gar-
ment, or I feel, or touch, thy garment, (A, K,)
or when, (Mgh,) or if, (Mab,) I feel, or touch,
thy garment, and thou feelest, or touchest, my
garment, (Mglı, Mab,) or when I feel, or touch,
the thing to be sold, ($,) the sale is binding, or
settled, or concluded, (Ş, A, Mgh, Mab, K,) be-
treen us, (S, Mab,) for such a sum : (S, Mẹh,
K :) or, accord. to Aboo-Hanecfel, in thy say-
ing, I will sell to thee this commodity for such as
sum, and when I feel, or touch, thee, the sale is
binding, or settled, or concluded; or in the pur-

in purchasing a commodity on the condition of

feeling it with the hand shall cut oue off from the

feeling] with the hand for the purpose of knowing

hand; as also : (TA :) or a distinction is
to be made between them; for it is said that

thing with a thing ; and is sometimes [for] the
knowledge of a thing, though there be no touch-

Aus yle is mostly mutual feeling or touching, &c.,

Je'ý act. part. n. of 1 (Msb, &c.) One says,
of a woman who commits adultery, or forni-
,فَلَّانَةُ لَا تُرُوَّ يَدَ لَامِسِ ,Cation, or acts viciously
(٨,TA,) or ◌ٍلَا تَمْنَعُ يَدَ لَامِس, (K,) but the
Intter is at variance with the written authorities,
the former being the phrase commonly known,
(TA,) [properly signifying, Such a woman does
not repel the hand of a feeler ; ] meaning, I such
a woman commits adultery, or fornication, and
acts viciously, (K, TA,) not repelling from her-
self any one who desires of her that he may lie
with her ; (TA;) and she is suspected of easiness,
or compliance, (K, TA,) towards him who desires
of her that he may lie with her : (TA :) or the
meaning is, such a woman gives, of her husband's
property, what is sought, or demanded, from
her; and this is more probably meant in a trad.
in which a man is related to have said thus of
his wife ; because Mohammad directed him to
retain her, and did not require him to divorce

fied butter, which one takes with the finger,

LW A thing which one tastes, (Ķ, TA), and
with which one moves about the tongue in the
mouth. (TA.) YOU say, LES JÚ. He has not
anything to taste, (K, TA,) &c. (TA.) And

And شَرِبَ المَاء لَمَاظًا He tasted the nater with the

which is eaten. AHIn says, I know not whether
it [the plant] have, or have not, قطنيّة [q. v.].

وَلَاتَ - (لوت .TA, art) . لوت .q v., in art

opinion, When (it, or the time,) was not a time
of flight : in other cases, and (it, or the time,) is,
or was, not a time of flight]. Sy is here likened
to ; and the name of the agent is under-

but this is the opinion of Sb : so in the margin of
soine copies of the $. (TA.) Or Sy is origi-

(El-Muärrij, Ş.) _ With respect to the proper
meaning and etymology of Sy there are four
opinions. First, that it is a single word, a verb
in the pret. tense : and some say, that it is origi-
nally Sý in the sense of Jeff, and afterwards
used as a negative, like Jf : so says Aboo-Dharr
El-Khushanee, in his Expos. of the Book of Sb:
others, that it is originally ; that its _~ is
changed into , and then the us into I, because
it is movent and preceded by fet-hah: 80 says
Abu-r-Rabeca. Second, that it is two words,
the negative y, with the fem. S, added to make
the word fem., as say IHsh and Er-Radee, or to
render the negation more intensive, as is said in
the Expos. of the Kut by the author of the latter
work: and this is the general opinion. Third,
that it is an independent word, not originally
w nor y; as related by the sheykh Aboo-Is-
húk Esh-Sháțibee alone. Fourth, that it is a
word and a part of a word, namely the negative
y, and & prefixed to e; which opinion is
ascribed to A'Obeyd [as is mentioned in the 8]
and Iba-El-Taraweh : the former of whom
argues in favour of this opinion from the fact
that S is found so prefixed in Otliman's copy of
the Kur-án; but this is no proof, because there
are found in the writing of that copy things at
varianee with analogy. (TA.) ◌َتَحِين [how-
ever] occurs, without Sy, in the following verse
of Aboo-Wejzeli :

العَاطِفُونَ تَحِينَ مّا مِنْ عَاطِفٍ
وَالْمُطْعِمُونَ زَمَانَ أَيْنَ الْمُطْعِمُ

[The persons who act affectionately in the time
when there is none (other) that acts affectionately ;
and the feeders in the time when (it is said)

is favoured by the following facts : that Sy is
pronounced in a case of pause Sý and sý: that | observed, that Sy, in this instance, has no

occur in readings of the Kur-an: but Sý, with

governing the subject in the acc. case, and the

it resembles verbs in their force as words, [ being
composed of at least three letters, and the last
being meftoohah,] and in their admitting most
of the pronouns as affixcs, and in their meanings.
Would that Ley] لَيْتَ زَيْدًا ذَاهِبْ .Ex (.؟)
لَيْتَنِى فَعَلْتُ كَذَا وَكَذًا were going;] (S;) and

but (:): إِنَّنِى and إِنّى and , لَعَلَِّى and لَعَلِى
whereas ; ليمى is more common than ليتنى

saying of the poct,
- With respect to its government there are
also four opinions. First, that it has no govern-
ment : that if a noun in the nom. case follow it,
it is put in that case as an inchoative of which
[as is mentioned in the $] the enunciative is
suppressed; and that if a noun in the ace. case
follow it, it is put in that case as an objective
complement of a verb suppressed ; which is the
لات حين مناص opinion of Akh; the meaning of
لاحِينُ منّاصٍ كَائِن لهم ,being, in the former case
[A place of flight not existing for them; which
does not imply that there was none for others ;
as y here has the force of a particular, not a
general, negation]; and in the latter case, the
meaning being, ◌ِل أَرَى حِينَ مَنَاص [I see not a
time of flight]. Second, that it governs in the
same manner as !; which is another opinion
of Akh and the Koofees. Third, that it is a
particle governing the gen. casc; an opinion
aseribed to Fr by Er-Radee and IHsh and
يَا لَيْتَ أَيَّامَ الصِّبَا رَوَاجِعًا
others. Fourth, that it governs like __; and
this is the general opinion ; but IHsh restricts
it by two conditions ; that the two nouns which
it governs must be significant of time, and that
one of them must be suppressed. (TA.) [It
is generally the subject, rarely the predicate, that
is suppressed.] _ _ y [when it lias grammatical
government] does not occur without [or,
as many say, some word syn. therewith, as c',,
&c.]. (S, Ķ.) So says Akh, accord. to J; but
this is the assertion of Sb; because the latter
holds it to have the same government as d ;
whereas Aklı assigns to it no government [as
explained above]. (IB.) But [it is said that]

in prose,]) thoughi meant to be understood; as
in the following saying of Mazin Ilm-Malik,
[respecting ' Abd-Shems, surnamed Makrooa, the
son of Saad the son of Zeyd-Menah the son of
Temeem, and respecting Heyjumaneh the
daughter of El-'Ambar the son of 'Amr the son
of Temeem, (S, art. 3,) who was enamoured
وَحُثَّتْ وَلَاتَ هَنَّتْ وَأَنَّى لَكِ مَعُرُوعٌ [,of Makroo
[And she conceived a longing desire ; but it was
not a time for her conceiving such a desire. And
how (O Heyjumaneh) should Makrooa be thine?

(Ş, K.) This, however, is said to be not poetry
but a prose-example. (TA.) Moreover, it is
meaning celý, w, [O, would that the days of
youth were returning (to us) !] 2:12) is put in the
acc. case therein as a word descriptive of state:

understood, as ◌ْوأقبَلت or ◌ْعَادَت, or some other
verb suitable to the meaning: so says Sb :

وَجَدْتٌ is sometimes used in the manner of ليت
[I found], (Fr, Ş, K,) in 'government, not in
meaning, (MF,) as related by the grammarians
on the authority of certain of the Arabs, so that
it is doubly transitive, and used in the manner
of verbs : (S:) you say , لَيْتَ زَيُّدًا شَاخِصًا [Would
that Zeyd were going away, Sc.]: ($, Ķ :)
this is done to give intensivencss : one says, for
this purpose, لَيْتَ زَيْدًا قَائِمًا (Would that Zeyd
were standing) putting both the subject and the
predicate in the acc. case. (Msb.) _ :

(1,) like ◌َعَلْم for ◌َعَلِم, (Sb, M,) the ى not
being changed into I (Sb, Ș, M) because it is
imperfectly inflected, being used in the pret. form

future, nor part. n., nor inf. n., nor derivation,
wherefore, not being perfectly inflected like its
coordinates, it is made like that which is not a

though not perfectly inflected like [other] verbs,

لَيْسَتْ and لَيْسُوا and ليْسًا and (؟) لستم and
ضَرَبَتَ c.], (Mughnee,) like as they say&]
and ضَرَبْتُمًا and ◌ْضَرَكْتُم [&c.] :($:) we have
not determined its measure to be JGG, because
this is not contracted ; nor Jus, because there
is no verb of this measure with s for its inedial
radical letter, except هيو ; but لست has been
heard; so, accord. to this form, it may be
like : (Mughnee:) the Benoo-Dabbeh say
; نَسًْا and تسْتُ in the sense of لسُنَا and لُسْتُ
(: لوس .TA, art): لستُ and some of them say
but Sb says, that the Arabs did not say ",
like as they said خفت, because ليس is not
perfectly inflected like [other] verbs. (M.)
[There is also another opinion respecting ity
origin, which will be mentioned in the course
of this article.] It [is generally a particular
(not a universal) negative, and] denotes the
negation of a thing at the present time ; (M,
Mughnec ;) [i.e.] it denotes [thus] the negation
of its predicate : (Msb :) and has the same
government as the verb ◌َكَان and its coor-
dinates ; ($;) governing the subject in the nom.,
and the predicate in the accus. : ($, Mughnce :)
us when you say, لَيْسَ زَيْدْ قَائِمًا [ Zeyd is not
a person standing] : (Msb:) and by means of
the context, it denotes the negation of a thing
at a time not the present ; as in the saying of
El-Aasha [respecting Mohammad],

وَلَيْسَ عَطَاءَ اليَوْمِ مَانِعَهُ غَدًا
[He has bounties the bestoring of which is not
un alternate days; and the giving of to-day
will not be a preventer of it to-morrow]; and
[sometimes when it is followed by a verb, as]
in the saying, ◌ُلَيْسَ خَلَقَ اللهُ مِثْلَه [God hos
not created the like of him, or it.] (Mughnee.)
But it differs from its coordinates in that the
prep. muy be prefixed to its predicate ; as
in the saying, ◌ٍليُسَ زَيْدْ بِمُنْطَلِق ['Leyd is not
going away] ; the _ being a means of the verb's
being truns., and ulso corroborative of the nega-
tion : and one may optionally not introduce it,
because one may do without the corroborative,
and because some verbs are trans. sometimes by
means of a prep. and sometimes without a prep.,
as اشْتَقْتُلْك and ◌َ؟). اِشْتَقْتُ إِلَيْك.) It also differe
from its coordinates in that its predicate may not
مُحْسِنًا كَانَ be put before it: for you may say
or some (:؟): مُحْسِنًا لَيْسَ زَيْدٌ but not , زيد
allow this latter; but others disallow it. (Ibn-
'Akeel on the Alfeeyeh, section on &'S and its
coordinates.) It is also used as an exceptive
particle, (S, M, Mughnee,) in the place of y !;
(§, Mughnee ;) in which case [also] its subject
[which is understood] is in the nom. case, and
جَاءَنِى ,its predicate in the accus .: (S:) you say

ing, وليس, the fet-hah of the s being made full
in sound, on account of the pause. (M.) In
the saying of a certain poet,
جَمِنِى الْقَوْمُ ,You may also way (.الآتِي find
Ji's [The company of men came to me, except-
ing thee]; but the separate pronoun, DE!, is
here better. (S.) When the predicate after it
is connected with yi, as in the ex. here next
following, Benoo-Temeem make it in the nom.
case: thus they say, لَيْسَ الطَّيبُ إِلَّ المِسْك [It is
not perfume, except mush ; meaning, nothing is
perfume except musk]: which has been resolved
in several ways; some holding LJI to be the
subject of : but its being peculiar to the dial.
of Temeem refutes the explanations here referred
to : some, again, hold __ to be here used as a
, لَيْسَ خَلَقَ اللّهُ مِثْلَّهُ particle; and so in the saying
mentioned above. (Mughnee.) Sometimes it is
used in the sense of ◌ِلا الثَّبْرِثَّة [the y which denies
in a general manner to the uttermost, i. e., uni-
versally, or totally]; as is said in the Ķ, except
that in all the copies thereof we find Wig put by
قَدْ رُسَّتِ الحَاجَاتُ عِنْدَ قَيْسِ

[Where is the place of flight when God is the
pursuer, and El-Ashram (meaning Abrahah) is
the overcome, not the overcomer ?]: which has
been resolved by supposing Jul to be the
subject of , and the predicate to be sup-
pressed ; the latter being said by Ibn-Malik to be
an annexed pronoun referring to El-Ashram; so
that the meaning is ◌ُليُسَهُ الغَالِب [the overcomer is
not he]. (Mughnee.) It is said (M, Ķ) by
Fr, (M,) and also by Kh, (TA,) that the ori-
ginal of لَيُس is ◌َلَا أَيْس ; (M, K lin the latter of

and this, says Fr, is shown by the saying,

clear, pure, free from every admixture or im-
perfection or the like ; as also "wane, nor. ",
مَحْصَ ,Az, A, TA.) You say) مَحْصَّ .inf. n
K,) He,؟) , مَحَصْه ٢ A, TA,) or) , الذَّهَبُ
cleared, or purified, the gold from what was
mixed with it, (Ş, A, K,) i.e. from the earth, or
dust, and dirt, (TA,) ,ul by fire. ($, A, Ķ.)
-- [Hence,] [ He (God) purged, or purified
it; namely a man's heart : and him ; namely a
man repenting. (A.) It is said in the Kur,
[iii. 135,] وَلِيُمَّصَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا :And that
God muy purify those who believe : (TA:) or
purge away the sins of those who believe: (Fr,
TA :) or these words have another meaning,
which sce below. (TA.) It is also said in a
trad., mentioning a scdition, or conflict and
يُمَخّصُ النَّاسُ فِيهَا كَمَا ,faction, or the like
i.e. I Men shall be cleared ,يُمَحَّصُ ذَهَبُ المَعْدِنِ
therein, one from another, like as the gold from
the mine is cleared from the earth, or dust.
(TA.) ◌ِتَمْحِيصُ الذُّنُوب significs I The purging
ومَحَصْ عَنَّا ذُنُوبَنَا ,of sins. (TA.) And you say
meaning $ Remove thou, or put thou anuy, from
us our sins. (TA.) [But this phrase may bc
rendered somewhat differently ; as will be scen
; مَحَّصَهُ and ,مَحَصَ ا اللهُ مَا بِكَ below.] And
i.c. 1 May God remove, or put away, what is in
thee. (TA.) __ [Hence, also,] + He tried,
proved, or tested, him : ($, IAth, Ķ:) and
accord. to Ihn-'Arafeh, the verb has this meaning
in the phrase quoted above from the Kur : [but
he adds,] because the trial of the Muslims
diminishes their sins : for (TA)5
also signifies The diminishing [a thing]. (Ibn-
مُخْصَ اللهُ عَنْلَكَ ذُنُوبَكَ ,Amfeh, K.) You say'
May God diminish thy sins. (TA.) __ And
the clearing, or cleansing, flesh from sinews,
(Ķ, TA,) for the purpose of twisting them into
a bow-string. (TA.)

Såno, (TK,) He gave him to drinh [milk such
as is termed] Jarls; (S, A, Ķ;) as also
Piano. (Ş, Ķ.) __ He made it (namely
milk) to be such as is termed Jando ; (A ;) and
thanol signifies [the same; or] he made it
(milk, or anything, $) to be pure, sheer, free
from admixture, unmingled, unmixed, or clear.

and inf. n. as above, 1 I made love, or affection,
true, or sincere; as also famanuel. (Mgb.)

in a trad. بَارِكُ لَهُمْ فِى مَحْضِهَا وَمَخْضِها Do Thou
bless them in their [the beasts'] pure milh and

عَرَبِىّ مَحْض used as an inf. n. (TA.) And

A man who loves [milk such as is
وشَحِمْ لَحِمْ ,like as one Bay's ; محض [termed
meaning one " who loves fat and flesh meat :"

: K:) each is a relative epithet): مَاحضٌ *
('TA :) or the latter signifies a possessor of
(:؟): تَامِرْ and لابِنْ S,K;) similar to) ;مَحْض
