(Mgb, TA) and His, or this is erroneous,
(Myb,) [und perhaps ◌ٌكُتَرَة, and ◌ْكُتُر, or these
,كْثَارَةٌ below,)] and ,كَتْرَةَ are simple substs., (uce
(TA,) It was, or became, much, copious, abun-
dant, many, numerous, great in number or
quantity ; it multiplied; it accumulated. (S, Ķ,
TA.) ◌ُكَتُرُوا عَلَيْهِ فَغَلَبُوه [They multiplied against
him and overcame him.] (TA in art. 3)c).
,Such a thing proceeded from him كَتُرَ مِنْهُ كَذَا]

is related as above: but accord. to the Ķ.,
-He did not shoot, or throw any مَّ رَمَى يكِتَابٍ*
thing; an arrow or other thing. (TA.)
much] presents an instance of pleonasm, [being
for ◌ُأَكْثَرْتُ الأَكْلَ وَتَحْوَه ,] accord. to the opinion
of the Koofees : or it is an instance of explication
[of the vague signification of the verb], accord.
to the opinion of the Bagrecs; the objective
complement being suppressed, and the complete
phrase being ◌ِأَكْتَرْتُ الفِعْلَ مِنَ الأَكْل :and Bo
in the like cases. (Msb.) [You say also
He spoke, or talked, wuch; was أَكْثَرَ فِىِ الكَّلَامِ
.كشب and كتنب .see arts: كُنْتَبْ and كَثْنَبْ
profuse, or immoderate, in speech, or talh. And
in like manner, ◌ِكَتُرَ فِى الأَمْر He did, acted, or
occupied himself, much in the affair.] -AS
[as an intrans. v.] signifies ◌ٍأَتَّى بِكَثِير [He
,حَارِك or part below the) مِنْسَج The كَائِبَةٌ
which latter is the withers, or the upper part
thereof, y.c.,) of a horse : (K:) or the fore part
of the mis of a horse, where the hand of the

Also, [ He became rich ; he abounded in pro-

He endcavoured to acquire much, or] تكتّر .5
تكّر مِنَ العِلْمِ abundance, of a thing]. You say
LAS [He endeavoured to acquire much know-
ledge, in order that he might preserve it in his
memory]. And تكتّر مِنْهُ لِيَفْهَم [He endeavoured
to acquire much thereof in order that he might
understand]. (A.) See also 10. __ He made a
vain, or false, boast of abundance, or riches; or
a boast of more than he possessed; and invested
himself with that which did not belong to him.

You say ◌ُتكتّر بِمَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَه He made a boast
of abundance, or riches, which he did not possess ;
فُلَانْ يَتَكَتَّر And (.شبع .Meb, art). تُشَبعَ .syn
Such a one makes a vain or fulse show] بمَّالِ غَيْرِهِ
of abundance or riches with the wealth or property
of another]. (S.)

nification is frequent .- Fourthi, The finding one's
hopes false, or vain .- Fifth, The act of instigating,

knew that they had been pronounced liars" by

There are also two other readings; Mike and
Wie : accord. to the former, the verb refers to
the people to whom the apostles were sent ; and
Id's means " they knew :" accord. to the latter,
the words mean, "They (the people above
mentioned) thought that they (the apostles) had
مَا كَذَبَ الفُواْدُ - (.broken their promise." (Jel
Lsi L' [The mind did not belie what he
saw.] (Kur liii. II.) a'" mie [ His soul
lied to him :] his soul made him to desire things,
and to conceive hopes, that could scarcely come to

ing Keep to, or tahe to, such and such things. It
is an extr. phrase. (Isk.) You also say, E;je
كذبتُ menning Keep thou to me: and ,عَلَيْكَ
Kle Keep ye to me. IAar. cites the following
verse of Khidash Ibn-Zuheyr, [in which he
tauntingly compares a people to tieks] :

يَوْمُ الأَحَدِ والخَمِيسِ كَذَبَاكَ أَوْ يَوْمُ ,like manner
in a trad. respeeting the proper , الإِثْنَيْنِ والتَّلَاثَاء
days for being eupped, significs Kcep thou to
Sunday and Thursday, or Monday and Tuesday.
(IAth, Z.) The verb is thus used after the
manner of a proverb, and is invariable [as to
tense], being constantly in the pret. tense, con-
neeted [literally or virtually, when explained by

the imperative. JUje here [lit.] signifies Let
them render thee active, or brisk, and animate
thec, instigate thee, or incite thec. (Z.) [A trad.
of 'Omar, quoted below, presents another in-
stanee to which this signification is said to
apply.] __ Or Sie denotes instigation, or in-
eitement, of the person addressed, to keep to the
thing that is mentioned ; as in the saying of the
Arabs, ◌ُكَذَّبَ عَلَيْكُ العَسَل, meaning Lat thou
honey : but the explanation of this is, (The re-
linquisher of) honey hath erred [to thee; i.e., in
his representation of its evil qualites &e. ; whielt
is equivalent to saying, Eat, or keep to, honey]:

(Aal.) ___ Antaralı, addressing his wife 'Ablelı,

accord. to the dial. of El-Yemen : but in the acc.
necord. to that of Mudar. (TA.) ___ Er-Radee
[reading JI] eites this verse as a proof that
Sis, originally a verb, has become a verbal
noun, signifying j1. (TA.) But he is the only
one who asserts it to be a verbal noun. (MF.)
- Also, Mo'akķir El-Báriķee says,
وَذُبْيَانِيَّةٍ أَوْصَتْ بَنِيهَا
بِأَنْ كَذَبَ القَّرَاطِفُ والقُرُوفُ
And many a woman of Dhubyan charged her
sons by [saying], Keep to the red garments
(4. SI), and the bags (or receptacles) of leather
tanned with pomegranate-bark. She charged
them to take plenty of these two things aa spoil
from the tribe of Nemir, if they should pre-
vail over them. (Aboo-'Obeyd El-Kasim Ibn-
Selam.)_js is also said to have the same

كَذَّبَ النَّسَّابُونَ" .meaning in the words of the trad
[Keep to those skilled in genealogy : ] or Regard
is to be had to what is said by those skilled in
genealogy: another meaning to which is assigned
below. (TA.) ___ It sometimes signifies It is
incumbent, or obligatory. So in the following :
كَذَبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الحَجّ (:a trad. of 'Omar: TA)

and the meaning is let [the expectation of the
reward which will follow'] the performance of the
pilgrimage render thee active, or brisk, and
animate thee, instigate thee, or incite thee, to the
act : [and so of the rest of the trad. : but here I
should observe, that, for بيكْذِبَك and لِيُنشِطَك and
[ :. cc& لِيَكْذِبْكَ in the CK, we should read ,يَبْعَنكَ
(K:) __ or, as Isk says, Jis, here, seems to
denote instigation, or incitement, meaning Ce
keep ye to it; and is an extr. word with
respect to analogy : ($:)_accord. to Aklı.,
;كذب is governed in the nom. case by الحج
but as to the meaning, it is in the acc .; because
the meaning is a command to perform the pil-
grimage; as when you say, أمكنك الصيد ["the
game hath become within thy power, or reach"],
meaning "shoot it," or "cast at it:" (S:) he
who puts JI in the acc. case, [agrecably with
one relation of the trad., TA,] makes JWde [or
[in [implied كذب a verbal noun ; and in [عليكم
the pronoun which refers to a JI [and which is
the agent of the verb]; (K;) or the agent is
implied in JAS, and explained by what follows
كَذَبَ الحَجّ it ; (Sb;) [so that] the meaning is
كذب [,Z:) or, [as shown above): عَلَيْكُمُ الحَجّ
is a verbal n., meaning gull , and JI is in the
ace. case as governed by it : (Er-Radee :) though
its being in the acc. case, accord. to some, is
altogether unknown: (TA :) ___ [or the meaning
is as stated before on the authority of ISh. : ] ___
كَذَبَ عَلَيْكَ الحُجُّ إِنْ ذُكِرَ or the trad. mcans
-the re)] أَنَّهُ غَيْرُ كَافٍ هَادِمٍ لِمَا قَبْلَهُ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ
linguisher of ) the pilgrimage hath erred to thee if
it have been spoken of (by him) as not sufficient,
(and as not) abolishing the sins, or offences,
(committed) before it: agreeably with the ex-

in this sense by the people of El-Hijaz, and the
rest of the Arabs have followed them in so using

مَا كَذَّبَ أَنْ فَعَلَ - (.journey with energy. (TA
LE (so in the TA, and in a MS. copy of the Ķ:
(: مَا كَذَبَ ,in the CK, and in two copics of the S
[ He did not delay to do so : (S, Ķ :) he was not
cowardly and weah, and did not delay to do so.
(TA.) كذّب عَنْ أَمْرِ قَدْ أَرَادَهُ =ـ !He abstained,
or desisted, or drew back by reason of fear, from
a thing that he had desired to do. (K.) __ is
(and " ◌َكَذَّب , TA,) t He (a wild beast) took a
run, and then stopped to see what was behind
him, (K,) whether he were pursued or not.

(TA:) or this verb bears the former of these two
significations, and Vois signifies the latter:

but the former sometimes signifies he incited,
urged, or induced, him to lie, .fc. (a signification
assigned to it in the K) : and sometimes, he made
manifest, or proved, his lying, &c. (a signification
also assigned to it in the K): and he found him
a liar, &c. (Th, $," TA.) = Jisi, inf. n.
Sue!, : He, being called to, or shouted tu,
remained silent, feigning to be asleep. (AA, Ķ.)
5. JAG He affected lying: or he lied pur-
panely (َتَّكَلَّفَ الكَذِب) .(S,K.) Is told a lie ;
[[like كَذَب.] (MA, KL.) [Scc also an instance
in which it is trans., meaning He spoke falsely,
vocc تكذّبُهُ -[.تزعم ,(K,) and ◌ِتكذّب عَلَيْه , (TA,)
He asserted that he was a liar. (K.) Aboo-
Bckr Es-Şiddeek says,
رَسُولٌ أَتَاهُمْ صَادِقًا قَتَكَذَّبُوا
عَلَيْهِ وَقَالُوا لَسْتَ فِينَا بِمَاكِثٍ
[An apostle came to them, speaking truth ; but
they brought a charge of lying against him,
or asserted him to be a liar, and said, Thou shalt
not stay among us]. (TA.)

مَتَّى كَانَ حُكْمُ اللهِ فِى كَرَبِ النَّفْلِ
[When was the wisdom of God in the stumps, or
lower ends, of palm-branches?] (Ş.) Said by
Jercer, in reply to Es-Salatán El-'Abdee, who
had pronounced El-Ferezdak superior to Jereer
in point of lineage, and Jereer superior to El-
Ferezdaķ as a poet. IB denies it to be a pro-
verb; but IM contends against him that it is.
[The meaning is, When was God's wisdom in
husbandmen, and possessors of palm-trees ? for
the region of Es-Salatan's tribe abounded in
palm-trees. The words are applied to a man
who provokes another to a contest for excellence,
being unworthy of the contest. See Freytag,
Arab. Prov., ii. 628.]

or sweetest, kind of date in the full-grown, green

posed a difficult task; and originating from the
fact that a man divided a sheep, or goat, in
pieces, and put them into its stomach to cook

circumference] and ◌ُقُطُر [or diamcter] and
or area], which [last] is the produrt] تكْسِيرُ
