(ISk, S, M, Meb :) such, at least, is generally
the case, though both sometimes occur in one
and the same sense, that which اقصر عنه gencrally
bears: (TA:) and ◌ِقصّر فِى الأمْر the fell, or stopped,
or came, short in the afair : it signifies nearly
the same as اقصر عنه, i. e., he fell short of
accomplishing the affair ; he fell short of doing
what was requisite, or due, or what he ought to
have done, (عَمَّا كَانَ يَنْبَغِى, or the like, being
understood,) in, or with respect to, the affair : a
meaning very common, and implied, though not
expressed, in the M : and] he flagged, or was
remiss, in the affair ; syn. ؟): تَوَانَى, TA:) or
aš signifies he left, desisted from, neglected, or
left undone, a thing, or part thereof, from ina-
bility : but Vyašl, he left it, &e., or part thereof,
with ability to do it. (Kull p. 128.) [And ,as

by such a one, or due to him ; or] he acted
meanly, and sparingly, with such a one, in a gift.

it, turning to the clear, and raises his head]: or
here significs he contracts his neck تقاصر منها
from it: and it is said that die Vpas signifies as
explained above, he left or relinquished it, &c.

came to be in the last part of the day; and the
latter, we entered upon the last part of the day.

,تَعْصِيرٌ .inf. n, قَصَّرَ ا العَطِيّة ,And in like manner]
He made the gift scanty, or mean : or, accord.
to the TH, قصّر فى العطيّة, which properly
signifies he fell short of what he ought to have
done with respect to the gift : but, though each of
these phrases is doubtless correct, the former ex-
pression I hold to be that which is indicated
إخْسَاسُ signifies التَّقْصِير [when it is said that
,4 .M, Meb,) sor ,؟), قَصْرَهُ ـــ (.M, K). العَطِيّة
(S, M,) inf. n. jaś, (Ş, M, Mab, Ķ,) Ile con-
fined, restricted, limited, kept within certain
bounds or limits, restrained, withheld, hindered
or prevented, him, or it ; Byn. d.d. (S, M,
Msb, K.") It is said in a trad. of Mo'adh,
To him belongeth what he hath لَهُ مَا قَصَرٌ فِى بَيْتِهِ
held confined in, or kept within, his house or tent :
(TA :) or what he hath held in possession &c.
(Az, TA in art. yo : sce 10 in that art. ) You
say also ◌َقَصَرْتُ الدَّار , inf. n. as above, I [confined
and so] defended the house by walls. (TA.) And
He [confined and so] kept قَصَرَ الجَارِيَّةَ بِالْحِجَابِ
safe the girl by means of the veil, or covering, or
the like : and in like manner you say of a horse.
(TA.) And in a trad. of 'Omar it is said,
L,) The night), قَصِّرًا TA,) or) , قَصْرَ بِهُمُ اللَّيْلُ
withheld them; namely a company of riders upon
camels on other beasts. (L, TA.) You also say
[قصّر به and قَصَرَ بِهِ and] قَصْرَ الَرَّجُلَ عَنِ الأَمْرِ
He withheld the man from the thing, or affair,
that he desired to do. (TA.) [Sco an ex. in a
قَصَرْتُ نَفْسِى عَنْ And [.طَلَّاع verse cited voce
: I withheld, or restrained, myself from a
thing : (JK, TA:") and I restrained myself from
inordinate desire of a thing. (TA.) Lebced
says
.
فَلْتُ وَإِنْ أُقْصَرْتُ عَنْهُ بِمُقْصِرٍ
incaning, But although thou blame in order that
I may be restruined, I do not refrain from that
which I desire to do. (El-Mazinee, L.) Also,
I restrainod my eye, or eyes;] I did] قَصَرْتُ طَرْفِى
not raise my eye, or eyes, towards that at which
I ought not to look. (TA.) And ◌َقَصَرَ البَصْر He
turned away the eye. (TA.) It is also said in u
قُصِرَ الرِّجَالُ عَلَى أَرْبَعَ مِنْ أَجْلٍ ,trad. of IAb
Men were restricted to marrying no أَمْوَالِ اليَتَامَى
inore than four [because of the property of the
orphans which they might leave]. (TA.) And
one says قَصَرْتُ نَفْسِى عَلَى الشَّيْء I confined, or
restricted, myself to the thing, and obliged myself
to do it. (TA.) [Sce also 8.] Hence what is
فَأَّبَى أَنْ يُسْلِمَ قَصْرًا ,.said of Thumamch, in a trad

I restricted the thing to قَصَرْتُ الشَّيْءٍ عَلَى كَذَا
,قَصَرَهُ عَلَى الأَمْرِ such a thing. (S, TA.) And
meaning, 1 )}, (M, K,) i. e., [He reduced
him, to the thing, or affair; or] he appropriated
him [or it, restrictively, ] to the thing, or affair.
1 قَصَرْتُ اللِّقْحَةَ عَلَى فَرْسِى [,TK.) [Hence)
appropriated the milk of the milch-camel [ro-
strictively] to my horse. (§, TA.) [And hence,]
-I retained for myself [re قَصَرْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِى نَاقَةً
strictively] a she-camel, that I might drink her
milk. (Mab.) Aboo-Du-ád says, describing a
horse,

might drink their milk, during the severity of the
winter, afterwards; and he is a protector to the
few she-camels from their being suddenly attacked
and divided in shares; & being understood be-

dren, and verily the short woman sometimes brings
forth tall children]. (Ş, K.") J is in error in
saying that this is in a trad. (Sgh, Ķ.) But
IAth also asserts it to be a trad. (MF in art.

[فُصُور.like the inf. n] قُصْرَةٌ and قَصَرْ and قَصْرُ
The falling, or stopping, or coming, short of ac-
complishing an affair; or of doing what one
ought, or is commanded, to do; or flagging, or
remissness : you say to a man whom you have
sent to accomplish some needful affair, and who
has fallen short of doing what you commanded
him to do, on account of heat or some other
مَّا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ المَكَانَ الَّذِى أَمَرْتُكَ بِهِ إِلَّ ,cause
أَنْ.٥.أ ,القُصْرَةَ and ,القَصَرَ and ,أَنَّكَ أَحْبَبْتَ القَصْرَ
Jaxt [ Nothing prevented thy reaching the place
to which I commanded thee to go but thy loving
to fall short &c .; or to flug, or be remiss]. (M,
Ko.) And ◌ٌقَصْرَة ,(K) or قَصْرًا , without ة, accord.
to the Nawudir of IAar, as cited in the L, and
,قصّار so in the handwriting of Sgh, (TA,) and
(K,) signify Laziness; slothfulness. (IAar, Sgh,
Ķ.) An Arab of the desert is related to have
said "أَرَدْتُ أَنْ آتِيَّكَ فَمَنْعَنِى القَّصَار [I desired to
come to thec, but laziness prevented me]. (TA.)
((M,K,؟), قَصَارْكَ» and قَصْرُكَ أَنْ تَعْعَلَ كَذَا-
and ◌َقْصَارُك ,(M,K,) and قُصَارَالك٧ , (S,M,K,) and
Bras, (M, K,) Thine utmost, or the utmost of
thy porrer or of thine ability or of thy deed,
[(,جهد .see art) وجَهدُك,.M, R, [or app ,جُهْدُك)
and Ské, S, M, Ķ,) and the end of thy case,
and that to which thou hast confined or restricted
or limited thyself, ($, TA,) [or that to which thou
art confined or restricted or limited,] is, or will
be, thy doing such a thing. (S, M, K.) It is
from yos signifying the "act of confining, re-
قُصْرَى* stricting, limiting," &c. (TA.) And
also signifies the end of an affair. (Sgh, TA.)
A poet says
·
إِنَّمَا أَنْفُسُنَا عَارِيَّةٌ
وَالْعَوَارِىُّ قَصَارْ أَنْ تُرَدْ
.

[Our souls are only a loan : and the end of loans
is their being given back; 3,3 being for 353]. ($,
المَوْتُ قْصَارَى كُلٍ بَلَاءٍ وَشِدَّةٍ ,TA.) You also say
[Death is the end of every trial and distress].

and ◌ًمَقْصَرَة and مَقْصِرًا (M,K) The afternoon: or
evening : syn. ◌ّعشي :(S, M, K:) or the first
signifies the last part of the day : (IKtt:) or the
time before the sun becomes yellow : (JK :) or
the first and second signify the time of the ap-
proach of the عشى, a little before the عصر :(A,
TA:) and the first (§, K) and second (A'Obeyd,
TA) and third, (A'Obeyd, §, TA,) [the time of ]
the mixing of the darkness: (A'Obeyd, §, K,
TA:) pl. of the second (TA) and third (S, M) and
fourth, (M,) مُقَاصِر ($,M) and ◌ُمَقَاصِير, which
latter is extr .; (M ;) in the first sense, as signi-
fying Clic; (M;) or in the last sense; ($ ;)
not signifying, as it is said to do in the K, ILJI
Byl; for this is a great mistake, app. oc-
casioned by F's seeing the passage [in the T] of
وَالمَقَّاصِرُ [,Az, [or in the M, in which I find it
and not properly ,وَالمَقَاصِيُرُ العَشَايَا الأَخِيرَةُ نَادِرَةٌ
considering it. (TA.) Sb says, that yos has no
dim .; the Arabs being content to use in its stead
the dim. of مساء. (M.) You say أَتَيْتَهْ قَصْرًا I
came to him in the afternoon, or evening; syn.
I ,مَقْصَرًا؟ and ,جِئْتُ قَصْرًا And (؟) .عشيًّا
came at the approach of the De, a little before
أَقْبَلَتْ مَقَاصِيرًا العِشَآء A, TA.) And) . عَصْر the
[The times of the mixing of the darkness of night-
fall came, or advanced]. (A, TA.) yOS [A
palace: a pavilion, or kind of building wholly or
for the most part isolated, sometimes on the top
of a larger building, i. e., a belvedere, and some-
tines projecting from a larger building, and
generally consisting of one room if forming a part
of a larger building or connected with another

buildings we find the appellation to have been
applied from very early times to the present
day:] a well-hnown kind of edifice: (M :) a
mansion, or house; syn. Jis: (Lh, M, K:) or
any house or chamber (%) of stone; (M, K;)
of the dial. of Kureysh: (M:) so called because
a man's wives and the like are confined in it:

the Kur, Ixxvii. 32, accord. to El-Hasan, as ro-

in two places. = The necks of, قَصْرٌ see: قَصَرْ
men, and of camels : (M, Ķ:) a pl. [or rather
coll. gen. n.], of which the sing. [or n. un.] is
åyes: (M:) [sce an ex. in the first paragraph of
art. jai:] or [so accord. to the M, but in the K
and] vijf signifies the base of the neck; (S, M,
K;) the base of the neck at the place where it is
set upon the upper part of the bach : (Nugeyr,
TA :) or the base of the neck when thick ; not

and pl. pl. [or pl. of ◌ْأَقْصَارٌ [قَصَر :(M:) or this
latter is pl. of aves, (M, K,) accord. to Kr, but
this is extr., unless the augmentative letter in the

I'Ab reads pants, in the Kur, Ixxvii. 32, (S, M,"
TA,) and explains it as meaning Like the thick
bases of necks, (M, "TA,) or as meaning pdfs

An Arab of the desert, describing the effect of
rains, said, ◌ْلَوْ أَلْقَيْتَ بَضْعَةً مَا قَضَّت , i. e. [If thou
wert to throw down a piece of flesh-meat, ] it would
not become dusty; meaning, by reason of the
abundance of the herbage. (M.) You say also,
The place, قَضَضٌ .inf. n ويَقَضُّ .2or , قَضَّ المِكَانُ
had in it, or upon it, Jaas [or small pebbles, or

other than a kutrub of night]. (K," TA.) It is
also expl. in the K as meaning Light, or active;
and Th mentions that it significs thus; and adds
that one says, ◌ٍإنّهُ لَقُطُرُبُ لَيْل [Verily he is a
ķutrub of night]; but this shows that it means an
insect [described above], and is not [properly
speaking] an epithet. (TA.) To this insect is
likened a man who labours during the day in
accomplishing worldly wants and in the evening
is fatigued so that he sleeps during the night
until he enters upon the time of morning to betake

he is ridden: (Mab:) and a young male camel,
until he enters his-sixth year : (Ķ :) or a young
male camel when it may be ridden, which is at the
earliest when he is two years old, after which he is
thus called until he enters his sixth year, when he
is called . : the young she-camel is not called
thus, but is termed Jo,5: ($, L:) Ks heard the
term os,25 applied to the female; hut this is rare.
(Az, L.) _ A camel which the pastor rides, or
uses, in every case of need; (A'Obeyd, §, L, Ķ;)
called in Persian &j; (A'Obeyd, Ş, L;) as

for it known to Az; but Khi says that this
signifies a camel which the pastor uses for carry-

ordinary riding, or use, is this]: (S, L:) or each
of these words signifies a camel which the pastor
uses for riding and for carrying his provisions
and utensils &fc. : and it's, a camel which a man
rides whenever and wherever he will: (L:) the pl.
of j,'s is isasi [a pl. of pauc.] and X's and
.L,K;) and pl. pl. [i. e. pl); فَعَائِدُ and قِعْدَانْ
of ◌ْفَعَادِينُ [قِعْدَان . (TA.) The dim of ◌ُقَعُود is
إِتَّخَذُوهُ فُعَّدَ ,It is suid in a proverb. فُعَيّدٌ
ShÚs They made him an ordinary servant for

swearing used hy the Arabs, in whichi Jes and
"am are inf. ns. put in the acc. case because of a
verb understood ; [or rather, as it appears to me,
and as I have said above, they are epithets, put
in the acc. case because of the prep. „ under-
stood;] and the meaning is, By thy Companion,
who is the Companion of every secret, [I will not
come to thee ; and by thy Companion, &c., or by
thy Watcher, or Keeper, God, I will not come to
thee; ] like as one says abi JURES : ($, L:) some
say, that Jus and Jas signify here a watcher,
or an observer, and a preserver, a keeper, or a
guardian, that God is meant by them, and that
they are in the acc. case because i followed

sume, (K,) or is like ◌ُقَلَبَه in the scuse expl.
above and in other senses but denotes intensiveness
and muchness; (Mgb;) and اقليه also signifies
the same as das in the sense expl. above, (Ķ,) on
the authority of Lh, but is of weak authority.
(TA.) Hence, (Mgh,) He inverted it; turned it
upside-down; turned it so as to make its upper most
part its undermost; (§," A," Mglı, Msb;) namely,
a thing; ($;) for instance, a [garment of the kind
called] .ًردّا :(A," Mgh:) and قلبه has a similar
meaning, but [properly] denotes intensiveness and
muchness. (Msb. See two exs. of the latter
,قلّبهُ And, (A, K,) like (.قَلَّبَة verb voce
[except that the latter properly denotes intensive-
ness and muchness,] (Ķ,) it signifies in
ŞiW (A, K) [He turned it over, or upside-
down as meaning so that the upper side became
the under side; lit. bach for belly ; accord. to the
; (ظَهْرًا عَلَى بَطْنٍ) TA, meaning back upon belly
but this is hardly conceivable; whereas the former
explanation is obviously right in another case:
i.e. heturned it inside-out, is indicated in the TA by
its being added, so that he knew what was in it].
قَلَبَ كْلَامًا ,One says. قَلَّاب See an ex. voce -
[meaning He altered, or changed, the order of
the words of a sentence or the like, by inversion,
or by any transposition]. (TA.) [And in like
manner, ◌ٌقَلَبَ كُلَمَة He altered, or changed, the
order of the letters of a word, by inversion, or byany
transposition.] Es-Sakhawee says, in the Expos.
of the Mufassal, that when they transpose [the
letters of a word], they do not assign to the [trans-
formed ] derivative an inf. n., lest it should be con-
founded with the original, using only the inf. n.
of the original that it may be an evidence of the
originality [of the application of the latter to denote
the signification cominon to both]: thus they say
.i. e] مَقْلُوبَ ١ مِنْهُ is أَيَس and ; يَأْسَ .inf. n ,يَيْس
formed by transposition, or metathesis, from it],
and has no inf. n .: when the two inf. ns. exist,
the grammarians decide that cach of the two
verbs is [to be regarded as] an original, and that
neither is مقلوب from the other, as in the case of
-but the lexicologists [in gene: جَبَذَ and جَذَّبَ
ral] assert that all such are [of the class termed]
And] (.نوع Mz, close of the 33rd) . مقلوب
likewise signifies He changed, or converted,
a letter into another letter ; the verb in this sense
قَلَبَ الوَاوَ ,being doubly trans .: for ex., one says
" He changed, or converted, the , into (5.]_
And [hence] one says, ◌ِقَلَبَهُ عَنْ وَجَهِه He
turned him [from his manner, way, or course, of
acting, or proceeding, &c.]: and Lh has men-
tioned J3] [in the same sense], but as being
disapproved. (TA.) And ◌َقَلَبَ الصّبْيَان !He
(the teacher) turned away [or dismissed] the boys
to their dwellings: (Th, A, TA:) or sent them
[away], and returned them, to their abodes : and
Lh has mentioned wol as a dial. var. of weak
authority, saying that the former verb is that
which is used by the Arabs in this and other

turned over the earth for soning]: and (55,
يُقْلَبُ التّرَابُ also, I did so much.] (Mab.) And
AJ [The earth is turned over in digging]:
