6. Ish,W They vied, or strove, one with another,
to precede, outgo, outstrip, or get before. (S, O.")

كَمَا يَتَّفَارَُ الَّهَدَ الحَمَامُ

[They contend with the reins, being unbroken and
refractory, like as the pigeons vie, one with another,
in striving to get first to the scanty remains of rain-
water]. ($.) ___ [Hence, ] Jis L,Us Such a one
preceded, or got before, and made haste. (O, K,
,0) و تَغَارَطَتَّهُ الْهُمُومُ (,TA.) - And hence, (TA
Ķ, TA,) and byl, (O, TA,) + Anxieties, and
affairs, or events, came to him [as though] vying,
one with another, to be first : (K, TA :) or befell
him at an indefinite time, (O,* Ķ," TA,) but only
at such a time. (O, TA.) You say also, 256
Wl tAnxieties ceased not to come to him at one
indefinite time after another. (TA.) __ 1,05
وتفرّط The time of the thing past ; as also الشّىْء
which occurs in a trad., relating to a time of
prayer, and meaning its time passed before its
being performed : (TA :) and both of these verbs
are used in the sense next following in relation to
a warring, or warring and plundering, expedition.
(O.) The time of the thing became postponed, or
delayed, so that he who desired it did not attain
it. (K.) You say, تَغَارَطَتِ الصَّلاَةُ عَنْ وَقْتِهَا The
prayer became delayed after its time. (TA.)

a one's beneficence and kindness are not caught at,

so that one cannot avail himself of them, is not to
be feared : ($, Ķ, TA :) a saying of one of the

exceeding degree ; an exceeding of the due bounds,
or just limits. ($, O, Ķ," TA.) You say, DỰ!
,Avoid thou, or beware thou of] وَالفَرْطَ فِى الأَمْرٍ
excess in the affair]. ($, O.) _ Mastery, ascen-
dency, prevalence, or predominance: (Ķ, TA :)
as, for instance, of eager desire, and of grief.
(TA.) = A time, whether long or short; an
indefinite time; syn. .. ($, O, Ķ.) You say,
I met him time after تَقِيتُهُ فِى الفَرْطِ بَعْدَ الفَرْطِ
time. (§, O.) And L'in así úl I come to him,
or will come to him, at some time. (TA.) ___ It
also denotes one's meeting a man, (TA,) or
coming to him, (K,) after some days, (Ķ, TA,)
accord. to A'Obeyd; (TA;) not more than fifteen
days, (Ķ,) or than fifteen nights, accord. to the
same, ($, O,) nor less than three. (Ķ.) You say,
L'in wi fi [I meet him, or will meet him,
or shall meet him, after some days]. (TA.) [But
the above-mentioned restriction does not apply
when it is prefixed to a noun signifying a period
أَتَيْتُهُ فَرْطَ يَوْمٍ أَوْ يَوْمَيْنٍ ,of time : for] you say also
[app. meaning I came to him after a day or two
آتِيكَ فَرْطَ يَوْمِ أوْ to ISk, it is used in the saying
Soy, and that it is a day between two days ;
but this seems to me to be a mistake for between
a day and two days : it is afterwards said in the
TA that ◌ِفَرْطَ يَوْمٍ أَوْ يَوْمَيْن means after tno days;
but the complete explanation should doubtless be
after a day or two days.] Leheed says,
هَلِ النَّفْسُ إِلَّا مُتْعَةٌ مُسْتَعَارَةً

[Is the soul aught but a borrowed thing to be
enjoyed, which is lent, and goes to its Lord after
some months ?]. (S.) And an Arab said,
and being asked ; فَرْطَ سَاعَةٍ وَلَمْ أُوْمِنْ أَنْ أَنْفَلِتْ
" What is aet b,3?" he answered, " Like since
thou begannest to speak :" he meant [ I went away
after a little while, or a little while ago, and] by
and what follows it, I did not feel sure of my

before, or in advance, to seek water, (Msb,) and
who prepares for them the ropes and buckets, (S,
O, Mab,) and plasters with mud [in one copy of

water for them ; (S, TA;) as also Y LyL'; (S,
Mgh, O, Meb, TA;) being of the measure Jus
in the sense of the measure Jeu, (S, M$b, TA,)

number of persons who perform that office; (S,
O, Mab, Ķ ;) as also Y Lijs, (Ş, Msb, Ķ, TA,)
pl. of ◌ُفَارِط :(Meb, TA:) you say ◌ُرَجُلٌ قَرْط and
93 . (S, Mgh.) It is said in a trad., Uf
I shall be your preceder to] قَرْطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ

to be a [cause of ] renard, or recompense, prepared

mardness (ِتَقْدِيمُ العَجْز) :(Zj:) or [one of ]
repentance : or, accord. to some, the meaning is

some say also, that it means hastening, or accele-

of preceding, or going before. (S, O.) Hence the
نّهَّاكِ عَنِ ,saying of Umm-Selemeh, to sisheb
(He (referring to Mohammad] الفُرْطَةِ فِى البِلادِ
forbade thee from going forth into the country,
قُلَانْ ذُو فُرْطَةٍ فِى or provinces]. (S, 0.) And
Xl Such a one is a person who makes many
Ibn'Abbad, K,) but the latter) , فُرَطِىُّ and فَرَطِىُّ
is said in the Moheet to be with damm, [which
most probably means that it is %, and it is

and to a man, Untractable, refractory, or stubborn ;

وفِرَاطَةٌ ١ ٥٣ , ثُمَامَةٌ like , فُرَاطَةً " O) and,؟) فِرَاطٌ
(co in the O,) Water that is for him, of the tribes,
who first arrives at it; ($, O;) water that is
common property among a number of tribes, and
is for him who first arrives at it : (O, Ķ :) and
in like manner the latter word applied to a well.
هُذَا مَآءْ قُرَاطَةٌ " بَيْنَ بَنِى خُلَانٍ ,TA.) You say)
meaning, [This is water between the ,وَبَنِى فُلانٍ
sons of such a one and the sons of such a one, 80
that] whichever of them arrives at it first waters
[his beasts] and the others do not throng him.

Hence the saying in the Kur [xvi. 64], (TA,)
,And that they shall be sent before وَأَنَهُمْ مُفْرَطُونَ
or first, or foremost, to the fire [of Hell], and
hastened thither ; (Az, O, Ķ, TA ;) this being
the primary signification : (Az, O, TA :) or for-
gotten (Mujahid, Fr, O) in the fire [of Hell] :
(Fr:) or neglected, or left: (TA:) or forgotten,
and neglected or left, in the fire: and another
reading is * ◌َمُفرِطُون, meaning [they are] exceeding
the limits assigned to them : (O), K :) and another
is * ◌َمُفَرِّطُون,meaning [ falling short of their duty]
to themselves, in respect of sins. (TA.)_ [ Filled,
or] full; applied to a pool of water left by a
torrent.

Li. Exceeding the due bounds, or just limits;
acting extravagantly ; applied to a mun : exces-
sive; applied to anything ; as, for instance, tall-
ness, and shortness. (TA.) It is said in a trad.
of 'Alee, لَا تَرَى الجَاهِلَ إِلَّ مُغْرِطًا أَوْ مُفَرِّطًا ٧ Thou
milt not see the ignorunt otherwise than exceeding
the due bounds in what he doth or falling short of

topping the people, or surpassing them in tallness.

meaning He surpassed in tallness among his people

female hyena, injured, and made to bleed, (O, Ķ,
TA,) or killed, and injured, (L, TA,) the sheep
افرع اللِّجَامُ or goats. (O, L, K, TA.) And
J'AI The bit made the mouth of the horse to
bloed. (O, Ķ. [See also 1, near the end.]) And
L' il, said of menstruating, It made the
woman to bleed. (TA.) And [hence, app.,] ¿il
Jis He accomplished his want in respect of the
compressing of the bride. (AA,O, Ķ .* [See also 8.])
- And Segil She (a woman) sam blood on the
occasion of childbirth : (O, Ķ :) or, as some say,
before childbirth : (A'Obeyd, TA :) or at the first
of her menstruating : (Ibn-'Abbad, O, Ķ :) or she

woman, or a beast,) first saw blood when taken
with the pains of parturition, or near to bringing

that with which thou hast begun, or commenced :

good is that which [or with which] thou hast
begun. (Meb.) And ◌ُافرع سَخَرَه, and ◌ُحَاجَتَه, He
began, commenced, or entered upon, his journey,
افرعوا مِنْ and his needful affair. (TA.) And

when it was not the proper time for their coming.

branch] divided lengthwise being called
Jo: ($, O:) or the sys is [one] of the best of
bon's : (AHn, K, TA :) and [this word is used
.فَرْعَةٌ and قَوْس فَرْع as an epithet, i. e.] one says
(K.) = Also, i. e. , Property that is beno-
ficial, or serviceable, and made ready, or pro-
pared : (O, Ķ, TA :) or, accord. to the $, it is
&' which has this signification; but this is
said by Sghi [app. in the TS], and after him by
the author of the K, to be a mistake; and a verse
in which it occurs with the , quiescent is cited in
the O and K as an ex. of it in this sense : it may
be, however, that the poet has made the , quies-
cent of necessity [by poetic license, for the sake
of the metre] ; or it may here [properly] signify
" a branch," and be metonymically used as mean-

& The firstling of the camel, (S, Mgh, O,
Mab, K,) or of the sheep or goat, (L, Ķ,) which
they used to sacrifice to their gods, (S, Mgh, O,
Mab, K,) looking for a blessing thereby ; (S, O,
M&b;) and \ \2, 3 signifies the same : (Mgh,
Mab:) hence, (Mglı, O, K,) it is said in a trad.,
[implying the prohibition of this custom,] ý

him as used in the phrase فَيْحَ تّجير الفروع [which
I would render the vehement raging of the heat of
the asterism of the gyi] in a verse of Umeiyeh
Ibn-Abee-'Áïdh: El-Jumabee related it differently,
with غ; but the فُرُوغ [or rather the ◌ِفَرْغَان] are of
the stars of Aquarius; and the season thereof [i. e.
of their auroral rising] is cold; there is then no
(.TA) . جيع

to clothe with its skin another young one of a
camel, in order that the mother of the one sacri-

and in the CK, الفرّغ is put for الفراغ, and bas

ex., Tuleyhab Ibn-Khuweylid El-Asadee says,
in relation to the slaying of his brother's son,
Hibál Ibn-Selemeh Ibn-Khuweylid,

(TA.) It is also said that الفَرق is for rectifica-
tion; and " ◌ُالتَّعْرِيق, for vitiation : and IJ says
that ◌ْإِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا ◌ْ دِينَهُم) in the Kur [vi. 160,
and the like occurs in xxx. 31], means Verily
those who have divided their religion into sundry
parts, and dismembered it, and have disagreed
respecting it among themselves : but thut somc
read ◌ْفَرَّقُوا دِينَهُم,without teshdeed, meaning, have
severed their religion from the other religions [app.
by taking it in part, or parts, therefrom]; or this,
he says, may mean the same as the former read-
ing, for sometimes Jas has the same meaning as
فرّقٌ لَّهُ عَنِ الشَّيْء TA.) IJ also says that). فَعَّلَ
signifies He made the thing distinct, or plain, to
him. (TA.) - ◌ِفَرَقَ الشَّعَرَ بِالْمُشْط ,aor.2 and =,
inf. n. 33, He separated his hair with the comb :

between the mon and his wife, in respect of affairs
and of the expression of opinion, or, briefly,
whereby they might cause division and dissension

[The buyer and seller have the option to annul
their contract] as long as they have not become
separated bodily ; (Mglı, Mab ;) originally, Le
.for this is the proper meaning ; لَمْ يَتَغَرَّقْ أَبْدَانُهُمَا
(Mgb.) ◌ُّتَغَرَّقَتْ بِهِمُ الطُّرُق [properly The roads
became separate with them,] means every one of

ing, a thing [with the hand] so that its integument
becomes stripped off (O, TA) from its hernel; as,
for instance, a [shelled] walnut. (TA.) One says,
, فَرْكْ .O, MeD, K,) aor.2 , inf. n,؟) , فَرَّكَ السُّنْبُلَ
(S, Msb,) He rubbed, or rubbed and pressed, the
ears of corn (K, TA) with his hand [so that the
kernels became divested of their husks]. ($, O,

on the authority of Seer, and also mentioned as
: [فِرِكَّانْ".with two kesrehs and the teshdeed [i.e
(TA:) or all relate peculiarly to the hatred of the
husband and wife; (K, TA;) i. e., to the man's
hating his wife; or to her hating him, which is
the better known : it is said in a trad. of Ibn-
إِنَّ الحُبَّ مِنَ اللهِ وَالفِرْكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ,Mes'ood
[Verily love of the hushand is from God, and
hatred of the husband is from the Devil] :
A'Obeyd says that الفِرّك signifies the woman's
hating her husband ; that it relates peculiarly to
the wife and the husband, and that it had not
been heard by him as used in relation to any but
them two: and IAar says that the sons of a man
by a wife who liates him, which sons are termed
possess generosity, because the sons , أَوْلَادُ الفِرْكِ
thus culled are mnost like to their fathers, and do
not resemble her : and when the husband hates
the wife, one suys صلفها [i.c.صَلّفَها or صَلِغَها] and
فَرِكَتٍ = (.TA). [صَلِفَتْ عِنْدَهُ.».أ] صلفت عنده
ÉSyi, aor. : , (Ķ,) inf. n. 3,3, ($, O, K,) The
car had a flaccidity in its Lol [or base, meaning
the purt surrounding the entrance of the meatus

in art. فر :) and ◌َاخرى الجُرْح he slit the wound :
(T:) and ◌ِأخرى الذِّئْبُ بَطْنَ الشّاة [the oolf slit, or

does his deed, or the like] : but it is said [by Kh]
to be correctly 433, [as an inf. n.,] without tesh-

say, * ◌ّتَرَكْتُهُ يَغْرِى الفَرِى , meaning [I left him]
doing well, or excellently, in a deed, or in watering :

bucket, فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيَّا يَغْرِى فَرِيَّهُ ٧ [And I have

breast, or chest, and a hollow, or receding, back].

manding, aid, or succour : (Az, Ķ, TA :) and the
aiding, or succouring ; (Az, S, O, Ķ, TA ;) this
latter being likewise a signification of * elf3! : ($,
O:) an ex. of the former word (S, O, TA) in the
latter sense (O, TA) occurs in the saying of the
إِنَّكُمْ لَتَكْتُرُونَ عِنْدَ الفَزَعِ ,Prophet to the Angar
Verily ye are many on the] وَتَقِلُّونَ عِنْدَ الطَّمَعِ
occasion of aiding, or succouring, and ye are few
on the occasion of coveting, or greed]; ($, O, TA;)
or in this saying the implied meaning may be, ou
the occasion of men's betaking themselves to you in
fear (ْعِنْدَ فَزَعِ النَّاسِ إِلَيْكُم) in order that ye may
aid or succour them [which is virtually the same

&e., of thec, the only meaning, of this phrase, for
which I find any explicit authority, and one for
which I have given three authoritics in the first
sentence of this art. ; ] but you should not say

condition, like as the sleeper passes from the state

أفسد المَالَ ,M, L, K) One says) . أصلّم contr. of
[ He rendered the property in a bad state; marred,
impaired, consumed, or wasted, it]. (L.) [And
opile smit He corrupted, perverted, or marred,
their state, case, affair, scheme, plot, or the like ;
أفسده or the like, being understood. And ,أمرهم
JÁ He corrupted him and rendered him dis-
affected towards me.] ◌ّإِفْسَادٌ صَبِي, occurring in a
trad., means The injuring a child by rendering its
mother pregnant while she is suchling it and so
vitiating her milk : which net is also termed afuiJi.
(L) [And افسب as contr. of ◌َأَصْلَح significs also
He acted in a bad, an evil, or a corrupt, manner ;
acted ill, corruptly, wrongly, wrongfully, impro-
perly, unrightcously, wickedly, ritionsly, or dis-
honestly ; or did evil, or mischief ; alt to him:
and he created, or excited, disorder, disturbance,
disagreement, discord, dissension, strife, or quarrel-
ling ; or made, or did, mixchief ; ◌ِبَيْنَ القَّوْم be-
tween, or among, the people, or party. (See also

wishcil, or desired, [a thing, or man,] to be bad,
evil, corrupt, &c. (KL.) - [And He sought to
render binl, cvil, corrupt, &e. _ And hence, He
treated in such a manner as to reniler disaffected,
or rebellious.] One says, ◌ُالأَمِيرُ يَسْتَفْسِدُ رَعِيَتَّه [The
prince, or governor, treats his subjects in such a
manner as to render them disnffected, or rebel-
lious]. (A.) And ◌ُاستفسد الشُّلْطَانُ قَائِدَه The
Sultan provoked the leader of his forces to rebel-
lion by his evil conduct to him. (L.) __ [And
He sought to act in a bad, an evil, or a corrupt,
manner; to act ill, corruptly, wrongly, wrong-
fully, improperly, unrighteously, or dishonestly.]
One suys, ◌ٍاستفسد قُلَانْ إِلَى فُلان [Such a one
sought to art in a bad, an evil, or a corrupt,
manner, or to act ill, &e., to such a one]. (M.)

It (an event) happened in a bad, or an evil,
