of completion, so that the foetus dies, and their
exceeding so that the gestation becomes complete :
and accord. to this explanation, the reading of
seven months in the K may be correct : see also
Katádeh's explanation of Jag, below, which

A) 1 The generous,؟) غَاضَ الكِرَامُ وَفَاضَ اللَّثَامُ
became few, (§, TA,) and failed, or perished,
(TA,) and the mean became many. (S.) .
¿SE, (Ş, Møb, Ķ,) aor. as above, inf. n. goé,
(TA,) He (God, Ş, Mab) made it (i.e. water)
to become scanty, or little in quantity, and to
sinh into the earth, or disappear in the earth :
(§:) or made it to decrease, or diminish, or be-
come deficient : (Ķ :) or made it to go away into
the earth : (Msb :) and " Lolel signifies the
same; (S, A, K;) and so does غيضه ٢, inf. n.
Anis: (TA:) thus the first of these verbs is
trans. as well as intrans. (§.) [It is said in the
Kur xi. 46,] ؟) وَغِيضَ الْمَّاء, A) And the water
was made to become scanty, &c .: ($:) or was
made to decrease, or diminish. (A, B.) And
hence the saying of ' Aisheh, describing her father,
And he did away with what + وَغَاضَ نَبْعَ الرِّدَّةِ
appeared of apostacy. (TA.) You say also,

غَيِّصْنَ ا مِنْ عَبْرَاتِنَّ وَقُلْنَ لِى
مَا ذَا لَقِيتَ مِنَ الهَوَى وَلَقِينًا

meaning They made their tears to flow until they
exhausted them [and they said to me, What is it
that thou hast experienced, of love, and we have
experienced ?]: ISd says that & here denotes
some; or it may be redundant, accord. to the
opinion of Abu-l-Hasan; for he holds that it
may be so in affirmative [as well as negative]
قَدْ كَانَ مِنْ ,phrases, mentioning, as an instance
-TA.) One re). قَدْ كَانَ مَطَرْ meaning ,مَطَّرٍ
[ation of this verse gives Sauk; but the former
is the right. (O and TA in art. غيض.)_ Also
He opened a way, passage, or channel, for it
(namely water) to flow forth to a Jest [q. v.].
(Mab.)-t He diminished it, namely the price
of a commodity ; (Ks, §, Msb, Ķ;) as also

غيظ - غيض
AjÍ An abortive foetus, not completely
formed; (Ķatádeh, Ķ ;) i. e. less than seven months
old. (TA.) == t Little; or a small quantity: as in
the saying, or in ◌ِأَعْطَاهُ غَيْضًا مِنْ قَيْض ! He gave
him little from much. ($, A, K.) = An abun-
dance of the trees called Sici; i. e. Jiji and
TA.) [See). يُنْبُوت and عِدْرِش and حاج and أثْل
[.غَيْضَة also
Lige The ali [or spadix of a palm-tree];
(IAar, IDrd, O, K, TA;) like غَضِيض and
AA, O, K) [thus) عَجَم TA :) or the): إغْرِيض
correctly (in the CK) evidently, I think,
here meaning the heart (commonly called ,.
q. v.) of the palm-tree (the only produce that is
eaten except the dates)] that comes forth, or
coming forth, (K,) or that has not come forth,
(O,) from [amid] its [membranous fibres termed]
y [q. v.], and all of which is eaten. (AA,

of tangled, or confused, or dense, trees : (Mgh,
Mob:) or an أجْمَة ; i.e. a مَغيض [q٠٢٠] of
water collected together, in which, in consequence

place in which is a collection of trees in a Jagis
of water : (K :) or particularly, of [trees of the

but tais is at variance with what we find in the
poems of the Arabs; for Ru-beh, for instance,
makes it to consist of fruit-bearing trees and trees
not fruit-bearing, and makes it to be a Zlé:

stituted for L; [so that the verse should be
rendered, To God I complain of three qualities,
or habits, of a friend whom I love, every one of
which is to me such as angers;] thus says IJ:
but ISd says that it may be without substitution,
from wol as expl. in the last sentence of the first
paragraph of this art .; and thus the meaning
may be, such as causes me to suffer loss, or
detriment, and such as wrongs, or injures, me.

ing in the sands, and becoming large, the leaves of
which are smaller than those of the apple, which
it resembles in character, or form, (AHn, O,)
having a very sweet fruit, (AHn, O, K,) of the
kind termed Me, like the pods (325) of the
bean, and its mood is white; so, says AHn, I
have been informed by some of the Arabs of
'Omán, which is the place of its origin : n. un.
with ¿: (O:) accord. to some of the Arabs, the
species of trees called , [see this word, of
which one description agrees exactly with that

'Omán: (TA:) accord. to AZ, it is of the [trees

[the same, or] she suckled her child while she was
being compressed, or while she was pregnant.

The trees became tangled, or تغيّل الشَّجَرُ .5
abundant and dense, (Aş, Ş,Ķ,) in their branches,
having leafy coverings or shades; as also jel
and " JE: (K :) or all signify the trees bo-
came large, and tangled, or abundant and dense.
(TA.) __ And 1,45 They became many: (0,
Ķ:) and (so in the O, but in the Ķ " or") their
cattle, or possessions, became many. (O, Ķ.)=
JA'S He entered the Jut [i. e. thicket, or covert].
(٥٠) And ◌َتغيّل الشَّجَر He (a lion) entered
among the trees, and took them as a Jet [or
covert. (TA.)
8. ¿ stel He did evil to him without his know-
ing whence it came so that he might prepare him-
أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ ,.self. (TA.) It is said in a trad
i.e. [I seek protection by Thee أَعْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِى
from] my being the object of an event's befalling
me whence I shall not know; meaning thereby
the sinking [into the ground] and being swallowed
up. (TA.) ◌ُالإِغْتِيَال and ◌ُالغِيلَة are syn. in a sense
expl. below. ($, O, Ķ.) See the latter word
below : and see also 8 in art. Jac. One says,
JeLi, meaning He was deceived, and taken to a
place, and [there] slain. (TA.) - JUcl said of
a boy, He became thick and fat. ($, Ķ.)
10. EXE", said of a woman, a verb of
which the subst. is Line [q. v.] : (K :) [accord. to
the context in the Ķ, in which the meaning is not
clearly indicated, it seems to signify She suckled
her child while being compressed, or while preg-
nant; like Ejul for Új, Qui; and this I
believe to be the right meaning: or] it signifies
she was compressed while suckling a child, or
while pregnant. (TK.) - See also 5, first sen-
tence.

-As some say, (Msb,) it signifies The milk
with which a woman suckles while she is being
compressed, ($, Mab, Ķ, TA,) or while she is
pregnant : ($, Ķ, TA :) you say, ",
(Msb,) or JiJI, (Ķ, TA,) i. e. She gave him to
drink such milk. (TA.) - Also Water running
upon the surface of the earth; (S, Mgh, O, Meb,

kesr, is a dial. var. thereof, mentioned by ISd:
(TA:) both are said to signify water running
amid trees : (Ham p. 555:) IB says that the
former signifies thus; and that its pl. is Ja:
and it is also said to signify water running in
rivers or rivulets, and in streamlets for irrigation :
(TA:) and by some, to signify water running
amid stones, in the interior of a valley. (Hamn
ubi suprà.) It is said in a trad., that in the case
of that [produce] which is irrigated by the water
thus termed (ِ؟، ومَا سُقِىَ بِالغَيْل, Mgh, O, Mgb,
TA, or We, Mgh) there shall be [given for the
poor-rate] the tenth ; (S, Mgh, O, Mab, TA ;)
and in the case of that which is irrigated by the
bucket, half of the tenth. (S,TA.) [Sce also an
ex. voce alo.]_ And Any valley in which are
flowing springs : (Ķ :) or a place in a collection
of tangled, or abundant und dense, trees, in which
is water running upon the surface of the earth :
(Lth, TA:) and any place in which is water
(K, TA,) such as a valley and the like: (TA :)
und Już, with kesr, signifies any valley in
which is water; and the pl. of this is JULI [a pl.
==. غيل K) _Sce also) . غُولْ of pauc.] and
Also A plump, full, sel [or fore arm]; ($, O,
Ķ;) and so J&K: : (K:) the latter said by

: مُخْتَالْ And A fat, big, boy ; as also [.طَفَّلٌ
(K:) fem. of the former afue; (TA;) which is
applied to a woman as meaning fat; (S, Ķ ;) or
a fat, big, woman. (AO, TA.) __ See also Juž,

or variegated, border (Ryn. he) in a garment :

¡in the language of the Arabs it signifies the
causing evil, or slaughter, to come to another
from an unknown quarter. (TA.) One says,
ile ", meaning He deceived, or, beguiled,
him, and ment with him, or took him, to a place,
and slew him ($, O, K) when he reached it :
(S, O:) or he slew him at unawares. (Abu-l-
'Abbás, TA.) = Also The astH [or faucial bay
of the he-camel]. (IAar, K.)
A specics of the [مُغَيْلَان .in Pers] أُمُ غَيْلانَ
[trees called] olac; (Mgh, Msb;) the [species of
lote-] trees called jam; ($, O, Ķ, TA ;) the fruit
of which is said to be smeeter than honey : the
saying, of some, that it is with kesr to the ¿,
and that it is thus called because the > [pl.
of J,2] are often found before it, is rejected and
false: (TA:) Lth and ISh say that it is the
same as the . [q. v.]. (TA in art. b.)
Jy2, as stated by IJ, on the authority of
Aboo-'Amr Esh-Sheybanee, who had it from his
grandfather, is sing. of JE, (TA,) which is an
epithet applied to oxen, or bulls and cows, (AO,
IJ, O, Ķ, TA, ['' in the CK being a mistake
for " .. ]) and to camels, (K,) signifying Nu-
merous : and also [in the Ķ " or "] fat. (AO,
IJ, O, Ķ.)-And, applied to anything, Alone ;
solitary : pl. JE. (AA, TA.)
Also A single act of -. غِيلَةٌ see: غَيْلَةُ

It is also fem. of the epithet Je [q. v.]. this latter is said by ISd to be of weak authority,

,0) : applied to a land غَيِّلَةٌ signify the same; (Mgh, O, (O,K, TA.) And so غَيْلٌ * and غِيلَةٌ
Mab); i. e. The compressing one's wife while she TA : [mentioned also in art. Jak :]) or, as some
say, Juk, thus applied, (O, TA,) but accord. to
the context in the K " JA, (TA,) signifies Such
as one judges to be of little extent, though it is
fur extending : (O, K," TA :) and Jjk Slf, so
is suckling : (Mgh, Msb) :) thus expl. by AO as
stated by A'Obeyd: (Mgh :) and thus the
former signifies accord. to El-'Alkamee; and so
says Malik : or, accord. to El-Munawee, it sig-
nifies the compressing ane's wife while she is suckling
or pregnant : or, accord. to ISk, a woman's ! applied, has been mentioned in art. Jat as having
suckling while pregnant : (from a marginal note
this meaning. (TA.) And ale applied to a
woman signifies T'all: (O, TA :) and so does
Juist The lion: (K) or the lion that is in the
(.0) .[or covert] غيل
(.غول .TA in art). ذَاتُ غَوْلٍ
in a copy of the Jami' es-Sagheer of Es-Suyootee,
in explanation of a trad. mentioned in what here
follows, commencing with the words ES Sms:)
and J has this last signification (Mgh, TA)
accord. to Ks : (Mgh:) auue is the subst. from
is a غَيْلَةٌ " K:) and IAth says that): اِسْتَغْيَلَتْ
afsu Rancour, malevolence, malice, or spite.
jsw Much, or abundant, dust or carth. (TA.)
that is covert, or concealed. (K.) And Ecil, or
mischief; as also Wajuks: ($, Ķ :) thus in the
saying فُلَانْ قَلِيلُ الغَائِلَة and المَغَالَةِ ؟ [Such u one
is a person of little eril or mischief ]. (S.)_Sec

fulness from which mankind will not be free so
that I beg forgiveness of God in the day seventy
times : (TA:) or it means, being used metony-
المُرَاقَّبَة mically, verily I become diverted from
[meaning the fear of God, or, as a conventional
term, the constant knowledge of God's cognition of
me in all my states or circumstances,] by the
affairs that are for good relating to the present
world; for these, though matters of importance,
are, in comparison with the affairs relating to the
other world, as idle sport, in the estimation of the
people who follow the rule of المُراقَبة . (Meb.)

and [its fem.] غَيْنَاء is applied to a trce (ٌشَجَرَة) as
meaning green, (AO, S, Ķ, TA,) abounding with
leaves, having tangled, or dense, branches, (AO,
$, TA,) and soft, or tender : and sometimes it is
thus applied to herbs: (TA :) or [applied to a
tree] it signifies great, having wide shade : from
the phrase وغَانَ عَلَيْهِ كَذَا expl. in the beginning
of this art. : (Ham p. 574 :) and ◌ْأغْيَن signifies
[also] such as is tall, (Ķ, TA,) of trees, or, by
way of comparison [thereto], of men : (TA :)
the pl. is Ce: (S, TA :) which is expl. by Kr
as meaning the abundance, and collected state,

.act ومُغِين in the original form, [for ,مُغْيِن
part. n. of Li,] is used by Ru-beli in the
following verse :
أَمْسَى بِلَالْ كَالرَّبِيعِ المُدْجِنِ

أَمْطَرَ فِى أَكْنَافِ غَيْنٍ مُغْيِنِ
[There was, or came, in the evening, a moisture
like the continual rain of winter that has rained
in the tracts of overspreading clouds]. (S.)

Ly [or non-vocal, i. e. pronounced with the
breath only, without the voice], and of those
termed &,45 [or labial] : (TA :) it is a radical
باب الالف letter, and not augmentative: (TA in
¿QUI:) sometimes it is substituted for &; thus
in the conjunction 3, as in the saying" .
,الثّوم Zeyd came, then "Amr"]; and in"] عمرو
"the well-known herb so called [!]," for which they

truth is, that the aor. is here mangoob by gl, i did not stay in El-Basrah nor between the two
meant to be understood, (Mughnec, TA,) as is
said by MF, and the like is said by J, (TA,);
though the Si in this case is necessarily sup-
pressed : (I'Ak p. 295:) and it is said (Muglinee,
Ķ, TA) by Mbr (Muglance) to govern the gen.
case in the saying [of Imra-el-Keys],
فَمِثْلِكِ حُبْلَى قَدْ طَرَقْتُ وَمُرْضِعٍ
.
[Many a one like thee, even such as was preg-
nant, have I visited by night, and such as was
suckling]; but the truth is, that what here
governs the gen. case is _), meant to be under-
stood; (Mughuce, TA ;) like as it often is in the
case of ,, as is said in the Lubab. (TA.) __ It
occurs used in three manners ; in one whereof it
is an adjunctive to an antecedent, and denotes
three things : __ one of these is order ; and this
is of two sorts; relating to the meaning, as in
j &j &t [Zeyd came, and after him 'Amr] ;
and relating to a verbal statement, which is an
adjoining of an explicit clause to an implicit
antecedent, as in the saying [in the Kur ii. 34]
And] فَأَزَلَّهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ
the Devil caused them both to slip, or fall, from
it (i. e. from Paradise), and ejected them from
that state of enjoyment in which they were]:
(Mughnee, Ķ : ) __ the second thing that it
denotes when used as an adjunctive to an ante-
cedent is proximate sequence, and this is in
everything [i. c. in every case] according to the
estimate thereof; (Mughnee, Ķ ;") [meaning,
according to the relative, or comparative, esti-
mate of the time implied; for, as is said in an
explanation of the words thus rendered, in a
marginal note in my copy of the Muglinee, " the
long period is sometimes esteemed short by com-
parison ;" or it may be defined as a particle de-
rupted connection between two events;] one says
towns: and this sequence is not necessarily im-
plied by the _ that denotes causality; as is
shown by the correctness of one's saying !
,If he become a Muslim] يُسْلِمْ فَهُوَ يَدْخُلُ الجَنَّةَ
he will consequently enter Paradise]; the delay
between the two events [by deathi &c. ] being well
known : (Muglinee:)_ [or, accord. to J,] the
adjunctive occurs in three cases, in the first of
which it denotes order and proximate sequence
with association; you say, ضُرَبْتُ زَيْدًا فَعَمْرًا [I
beat Zeyd, and next Amr] : ($: [the second and
third of these cases will be mentioned in the
course of this art :]) __ and it is said to oceur
sometimes in the sense of "3, (Mughnee, Ķ,"
TA,*)denoting conjunction in an absolute manner,
with delay; (TA;) as in the saying [in the Kur
ثُمّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَعَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً [14.xxiii

(Mughnee, Ķ,* TA,*) denoting conjunction in an
absolute manner, without order; (TA;) as in
بَيْنَ الدَّخُولِ ,(the saying (of Imra-el-Keys, TA
Jeges [as though meaning Between Ed-Da-
khool and Ilonmal] ; (Mughnee, Ķ, TA;) the
right reading of which is asserted by As to be
with 3; but it is replied that the implied mean-
ing is ◌ٍبَيْنَ مَوَاضِعِ الدَّخُولِ فَمَوَاضِعٍ حَوْمَل [amidst
the places of, or pertaining to, Ed-Dakhool, and
the places of, or pertaining to, Howmal; the
former places and the latter being contiguous;
and we may therefore understand these words as
relating to an antecedent command to pause] ;
this phrase being allowable like the saying
I sat amidst the] جَلَسْتُ بَيْنَ العُلَمَا فَالزَّهَّادِ
learned men and the devotees]: it has been said
that & is here suppressed before , and that
3 is used in the place of 1; but this usage of
is strange: (Mughnec :) __ the third thing
that it denotes when used as an adjunctive 10
an antecedent is relation to a cause : (Mughnee,
K,' TA :") this is the second of the three
cases mentioned by J, who says, (TA,) it is
when what precedes it is a cause of what follows
it ; and it denotes adjunction and proximate

wept,] and ◌ُضّرَبَهُ فَأَوْجَعَه [Me beat him, and con-
sequently pained him,] when the beating is the
cause of the weeping and of the pain : (S, TA :)
used in this manner, i. e. to denote relation to a
cause, it is generally sueli as adjoins a pro-
position, as in [the saying in the Kur xxviii. 14]
And Moses struck him] فَوَكْزَهُ مُوسَى فَقَضَى عَلَيْهِ
with his fist, and consequently killed him]; or a
qualificative, as in [the saying in the Kur Ivi.
لَاَكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُومٍ فَمَّالِثُونَ مِنْهَا [54-52
Shall surely be] الْبُطُونَ فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ
eating from trees of Zakkoom, and consequently
filling therefrom the bellies, and drinking thereon

ner in which it is used [the second of the three
manners before mentioned (Mughnee)] is as a
connective of an apodosis, i. c., of the comple-
ment of a conditional clause, (Mughnee, " Ķ,-
TA,) when this is of a kind not fit to be itself

treat me with honour, I will treat thee with
إِنْ تُكْرِمْنِى أَكْرِمْك honour]; and you may say
[which is the more usual] if you do not make it
[i. e. s,si] the enunciative of a suppressed in-
choative [i. e. of Ul]: and in the case of the
إِنْ تُكْرِمْنِى you may say لا negative by menns of
sisi W [If thou treat me with honour, I will
not treat thee with contempt; and you may omit
the as is more usual] : (TA :) __ and some-
times the _ is suppressed in the case of necessity
in verse [on account of the metre]; as in the

be a verbal proposition, like the nominal, and tt

seiji [If thou treat me with honour, I will
treat thec with honour] : and likewise when it is
pret. as to the [proper] signification but [an aor.
as to the letter and] future as to the meaning in-
إِنْ أَسْلَمْتَ لَمْ تَدْخُلِ النَّارَ tended; as in the saying
[ If thou become a Muslim, thou wilt not enter the
fire of Hell]. (TA.)_ And as the _ thus con-
meets the apodosis with its protasis, so it con-
neets the like of the apodosis with the like of the
اَلَّذِى يَأْتِيفِى فَلَهُ دِرْهُمْ protasis ; as in the saving
[ Who comes, or shall come, to me, for him is, or
ishall he, a dirhem]: by its being introduced in
this case, one understands what the speaker
mcans, that the obligation to give the dirhem is
a consequence of the coming : otherwise the say-
ing would be ambiguous. (Mughnee.) Thus also
it occurs after a clanse commencing with the con-
ditional partiele Loi, q. v. (Mughnee in art. LI;
&c.)-It also occurs in the cases here following,
prefixed to an aor., which is inansoob by means
of gi, meant to be understood, ($, TA, and I'Ak
p. 295,) but necessarily suppressed: (I'Ak ibid .: )
-thus in the complement of a command; (S.
اكْتَنِى فَأُكْرِمَك TA, and IAk p. 206;) as in
[ Come thou to me, that I may treat thee with
زُوْنِى honour]: (l'Ak ibid .: ) [and] you say
Visit thou me, that I may do good] فَأَحْسِنَ إلَيْكَ
to thee]; ($, TA ;) to which J adds, you do not
make the visiting to be the cause of the doing
good; what you [would] say being, it is of my
way to do good always; bnt [there seems be au
omission here in the copics of the $, for, as] IB
says, if you make i to be inarfoon, [not
mansoob,] saying ◌َفَأَحْسِنُ إلَيْك, [the meaning is,
for I will do good to thec, for] you do not make
the visiting to be the cause of the doing good :
(TA :) the demand, however, in this and similar
cases, must not be indicated by a verbal noun,
nor by an cuunciative; for when it is so in-
dicated, the aor. must be marfoon; as in
;[Be silent, then I nill do thee good] فَأَحْسِنُ إِلَيْكَ
and in حَسْبُكَ الحَدِيثُ فَيَنَامُ النَّاس [The discourse
is sufficient for thee, so the people shall sleep]:

The third manner in which it is [said to be]
used is when it is redundant, so that its being
included in a saying is like its being excluded :
but this usage is not affirmed by Sh : Akh allows
its being redundant in the enchoative, absolutely;
mentioning the phrase ◌َأخُوكَ فَوْجِد [as though
meaning Thy brother, he has been found; but
I' is app. meant to be understood, so that the
phrase should be rendered, fully, this is thy
brother, and he has been found]: Fr and El-
Aalam and a number of others restrict its being
allowable to the cases in which the cnunciative
is a cominand, as in the saying,

وَقَائِلَةٍ خَوْلَانُ فَانْكِحْ قَتْاتَهُمْ

meaning is ◌ٌهذِهِ خَوْلَان, [so that the saying
should be rendered, fully, Many a woman is
there saying, This is Khowlán (the tribe so named),
therefore marry thou their young woman; and in
like manner the implied meaning of the third ex.

but there is no reason why it should not have Ji

It is related by Abu-l-Jowzà that the people

herbage grew, and the camels became fat to such
a degree that they became swollen, or inflated, in
the flanks (15); whence it [the year] was
called ◌ِعَامُ الفَتَّق .(O, TA.)

lengthwise : became disjoined, or disunited : or

means [ If ye fear حِقْتُمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنَكُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
that those who have disbelieved] may slay you ;
and in like manner in the Chapter of Yoonus [i. e.
in x. 83], ◌ْأَنْ يَغْتِنَهُم means ◌ْان يَقْتُلَهُم. (T. [In
the TA, these two exs. are misplaced, or some-

are not tried in their persons and their possessions
so that he who has true faith may be known from

melting of gold and of silver (K, TA) in order to
separate, or distinguish, the bad from the good.

" he melted," (T,) or from that verb as signifying
" he put into the fire," (Meb,) gold, and silver,
" for that purpose," (T, Mab,) it signifies A trial,
or probation ; (IAşr, T, S, M, Ķ, TA;) and
affliction, distress, or hardship; (TA ;) and [par-
ticularly ] an affliction whereby one is tried, proved,
or tested: (IAar, T, Ş, Ķ, TA :) this is the sum
of its meaning in the language of the Arabs : (T,
TA:") or the trial whereby the condition of a man
may be evinced : this, accord. to Zj, may be the
meaning in the Kur v. 45: (M :) or a mean
whereby the condition of a man is evinced, in
respect of good and of evil: (Kull :) [hence it
often means a temptation :] and * 3,5% signi-
fies the same as ifEs, (S, M, K,) meaning a
trial : (K:) the pl. of ◌ًفِتْنَة is ◌ْفتَّن .(Meb.) It
proceeds from God and from man : (Er-Raghib,
TA :) [there are many instances of its proceeding
from God in the Kur; for ex., in xxxvii. G1,] G!
i.e. [Verily we have made جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةٌ لِلظَّالِمِينَ
it to bej a trial [to the wrongdoers] is said in
relation to the tree Ez-Zakkoom; the existence
of which they disbelieved; for when they heard
that it comes forth in the bottom of Hell, they
said, Trees become burned in the fire; then how
can they grow therein ? (M.) [And hence] it sig-
nifies also Punishment, castigation, or chastise-
ment. (T, M, K.) And Slaughter : (T:) and civil
war, or conflict occurring among people : (M :) and
slaughter, and war, and faction, or sedition, among
the parties of the Muslims when they form them-
selves into parties : (T:) and discord, dissension,
or difference of opinions, among the people. (1Aar,
T, Ķ.) A misleading; or causing to err, or go;
astray : (T, Ķ :) [seduction ; or temptation : or
a cause thereof; such as] the ornature, finery,
show, or pomp, and the desires, or lusts, of the
present life or world, whereby one is tried: (T:)

one is tried thereby : (TA :) and women; than
whom, the Prophet said, there is no LE3 more
harmful to men: (T:) and a cause of one's being

former, A man who tries, or tempts, much. (TA.)
And SUN, The deril ; (T, Ş, Ķ;) who tries, or
tempts, men, by his deceit, and his embellishing
acts of disobedience; (T;) as also SJul; (M,
; فَتْنَ .is the act. part. n. of the trans. v] فَاتِنْ
and as such] signifies Causing to err, or go astray,
(T, S, M,) from the truth : (S:) hence the saying
(مَا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْءٍ بِفَاتِنِينَّ , [162 .in the Kur [xxxvii
(T, §,· M,*) which, accord. to Fr, means, Ye
have not power [over him] to cause him to err,
except him against whom it has been decrecd
فياتنين ; [that he shall enter the fire [of Hell
being made trans. by means of ie because it
implies the meaning of Just, which is thus
made trans. : (M :) Fr says, the people of El-
Hijaz say ◌َمَا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ بِفَاتِنِين; and the people of

in the Kur [xiii. last versc, &c.], and [thus in
المفتون ["copies of the S, app. a mistake for "or
means 21, and is an inf. n. [&c. ] : IB says, [in
remarking upon this passage of the S,] if the
be redundant, المفتون is the man, and is not an
, تَفْتِيَةُ .ISk, T, S, M, K,) inf. n) , فُتَّيَت .2
(ISk, T, Ş, Ķ,) said of a girl (ISk, T, Ş, M, Ķ)
that has nearly attuined to puberty, (ISk, T,)
