like ◌ُرَحْيَان ; and Talhah Ibn-Mugarrif read
TA :) the meaning is, i Nay, his): بِسَاطَانِ"
hands are liberal, or bountiful; the phrase being
a simile; for in this case there is no hand, nor
any stretching forth. (TA.) And it is said in a
يَدَا اَللهِ بُسْطَانِ " لِمُسِىْءِ النَّهَارِ حَتَّى يَتُوبَ ,.trad
(,K, TA) ،بِاللَّيْلِ وَلِمَّسِىْءْ اللَّيْلِ حَتَّى يُتُوبَ بِالنَّهَارِ
Or, accord. to one relation, بِسْطَان, (TA,) mean-
ing t God is liberal in forgiveness to the evil-doer
of the day-time until he repent [in the night, and
to the evil-doer of the night-time until he repent
مَبْسُوطُ * اليدِ in the day] : for a king is said to be
when he is t liberal in his gifts by command and
by sign, although he gives nothing thereof with
his hand, nor stretches it forth with them at all.
,مُنْبَسِطُ النِّسَانِ also significs بسيط - (.Sgh), TA)
(Lth,) or ومُنْبَسِطَ بلسانه (M, K,) +[Free, or
unconstrained, in tongue, or with his tongue,]

Kur [vi.93] , ◌ْوَالمَلائِكَةُ بَاسِطُوا أَيْدِيهِم, meaning
I The angels being made to have dominion over
them by absolute force aud porrer. (K," TA.)
كَبَاسِطِ كَفَّيْهِ ,[15 .And again, in the Kur [xiii
,Like the supplicutor of water { إِلَى المَاءِ لِيَبْلُغَ فَاهُ
mahiuy a sign to it [with his two hands], in
order that it may [reach his mouth, and so]
answer his prayer; (K, TA;) or, but it will

who amplifies, or enlarges, or makes ample or
plentiful, the means of subsisteure, to whomsoever

The palm-trees were, or became, tall, (JK, Ş,
Meb, K,) and full-grown : (JK :) or exceedingly
tall. (Meb.) - ◌ْوَبَسَقَ عَلَيْهِم (inf. n. as above,
TA,) 1 He overcame them, excelled them, or was
superior to them ; (JK, §, Ķ;) namely, his com-
panions : ($ :) he surpassed them in excellence.

it oozed, or flowed; or, as is sometimes the casc,

girl being a & [which means a virgin, and also
one that has not yet brought forth, and one that
has brought forth but once,]) had milh in her
breast : so, says Az, I have heard. (TA.)_

of these pls. occurs in the Kur 1. 10, meaning

the measure Just : accord. to one reading, it is

the pls. also significs The first portions of clouds :

white colour [as being always very high in the

[And my giving in pledge, or as an equivalent, or
giving up to destruction, my sons, not for a crime
that we have committed, nor for blood that has
been shed by us] : (S, M, TA :) for he had given
his sons in pledge for others, secking peace, or
,أَنْ تُبْسَلَ نَفْسْ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ (.reconciliation. (S,TA
in the Kur [vi. 69], means Lest a soul should
be given up, or delivered, &c., (AO, §, Bd, Jel,
TA,) to destruction, (Bd, Jel, TA,) or to punish-
ment, (Az, TA,) for that which it hath done, (Az,
Bd, Jel, TA,) of evil: (Bd:) or be given in
أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ أَبْسِلُوا بِمَا pledge. (Bd, TA.) And
I.E, in the same [ubi supra], means, in like
manner, Those who are given up, or delivered,
&c., (to punishment, Bd,) for their sins: (El-

and ◌ْوَبِصَّان , like شَعِرَان ; and this is the correct
opinion: Aboo-Is-hák says that it was so named
because of the Jews, i. e. gleaming, of the weapons
therein : (M :) but it is said in art. Jeg of the
بُصَّان and Sgh holde: وُبْصَان and وبصان K to be
to be correct because بص and ◌َوبَص signify the
same. (TA.)

or yielded, little water ; or its water became little.
(TA.) It is said in a trad. respecting Tabook,
(The source, or spring] وَالعَيْنُ تَبِضُ بِشَىْءٍ مِنَ المَاءِ
yielding scantily somewhat of water]. (TA.) And
بض .aor. as above, inf. n , بَضَّتِ العَيْنُ ,you say
and بَضِيض, The eye shed tears. (TA.) And, of
a man when you characterise him as patient under
affliction, ◌ُمَا تَبِضُ عَيْنُه [ His eye does not shed
tears]. (TA.) And ◌ُبَضَّتِ الحَلْمَة The nipple
streamed with milk. (TA.) It is said in a trad.,
,Having no milh drupping from it مَا تَبِضُّ بِبَلَالٍ
سَقَطَ مِنَ ,.or her. (TA.) And in another trad
◌ُ وَجْهِهٍ يَبِضُّ مَاءُ أَصْغَرَ
الفَرَّسِ فَإِذَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ وَعُرْفُ
[He fell from the horse, and lo, he was sitting,
with the side of his face exuding yellow water].

but some say so, urging the authority of Ru-beh.

sexual intercourse to obtain offspring]; and he
used to separate himself from her, and not touch
her, until her pregnancy by that man became

كَمُسْتَبْضِعْ تَهْرٍ ,It is said in a prov .مُسْتَبْضِعْ
Like the taker of dates as merchandise ] إلَى هَجَرٍ
to Hejer]; because Hejer is [famous as] the place
of production (مَعْدِن) of dates. (مستبضع (.؟ is
here made trans. by means of _! because it has

with an elegant and a proud and self-conceited
gait, with an affected inclining of the body from

ing one who wears too long a wrapper of the

Ile hell wealth, or the favour, or! بَطَرُ النَّعْمَةَ -
benefit, in light estimation, and was unthankful,
بَطِرَ هِدَايَةَ أَمْرِهِ - (or ungrateful, for it. (A

verted into inordinate exultation, and insolence,

stupified, confounded, or amazed, him, so as to
turn him from his clemency, moderation, or
gravity. (TA.)-ابطره درعه I He imposed upon
him more than he was able to do; ($;) what
was above his power : (K:) ac,; is here a sub-
stitute for its antecedent to indicate an implication
therein : (A :) yon say this when a slow-paced
camel has endeavoured in vain to keep pacc with
another camel; and when any man has imposed
upon another a difficulty beyond his power: (TA:)
or the meaning is, he cut off his means of sub-
xistence, and wasted his body : (IAar, K :)
signifying the " body." (IAar.)

[the former] is mostly used in relation to women,
(TA,) and as signifying a woman who exults,

and perseveres in error : (ADk :) [it is (,تَبْطَرُ)
said in the TA that some say uplay, and that this
is the more approved ; but Az says,] Lth cites,
from ADk, the phrase ◌ٌأمْرَاءً بِطْرِير as meaning
لِأَنَّهَا قَدْ بَطِوَت ;a clamorous, long-tongued woman
because of her insolent behaviour] : and] وأَشِرَتْ

(TA:) a tichet that is attached to a garment, or
piece of cloth, (T, S, M, L, K,) hearing the marh,
or inscription, of its price; (T, S, L, Ķ;) or a
ticket marked, or inscribed, with the weight, and
the number, of a thing: (TA :) of the dial. of
Egypt (T, S, L) and the neighbouring parts : (T,
L:) so called, (K,) or said (by Sh, TA) to be so
called, ($,) because it is tied by a twist, or thread,
(: of the unwoven end of the cloth : ($, K (,بطّاقَةٍ)
but this is a mistake: (ISd, TA:) [in Greck,
TITraKIOV, as observed by Freytag ; and hence
probably derived: ] accord. to some, it is [asus,]
with , because it tells (ٌتَنْطِق) what is marked,
or inscribed, thereon; but this is strange. (TA.)
It is said in a trad., that a man will be brought
on the day of resurrection, and ninety-nine scrolls,
or records, inscribed with his sins will be pro-
duced; and there will be produced for him a 23lay
bearing the testimony that there is no deity but
God, and it will outweigh the others. (TA.)

the body which is separated from the Gift [i. e.
chest, or thorax,] by the l [i. e. midriff, or
diaphragm]; containing the liver and the spleen
and the stomach and the lower intestines .f.c .; (Zj
in his " Khalk el-Insan;" [in which it is errone-
ously said to comprise also the lungs;]) contr. of

repletion, because of his hostility to men and
cattle, (A'Obeyd, K,) though he is sometimes
distressed by hunger. (A'Obeyd. [See various
readings of this prov. in Freytag's Arab. Prov.
i. 500 and 501.]) ◌ٍمَاتَّتْ فِى بَطْن, a phrase occur-
ring in a trad., means She (a woman) died in
فُلَانْ أَبْنُ بَطْنِه.بَطَنْ childbirth. (TA.) See also

the word بط occurs will be found explained

-Also The inside, or inferior, of anything;
syn. جوف :and so ◌ْبَاطِن ; syn. ◌ْوَابعِل :(K:) pl.

means The interior of a water-course or river-
bed [or valley; i. e. its bottom, in which flores,
occasionally or constantly, its torrent or river].
(MA.) And بَطْنُ مَكَّة means The interior of
Mekkeh. (Bd in xlviii. 24.) [Hence,] it is said
of the Kur-an, ◌ْ◌ِكُلّ آيَةٍ مِنَّهَا ظَهْرٌ وَبَطْن ,meaning
+ To every verse thereof is an apparent sense and

a sing., meaning The middle, or midst, of a
thing : and the lower, or lowest, part, or the

of these explanations plainly shows that what is
meant thereby is the prepuce of the clitoris ;
بعث - بطو
which, it seems, in the Arabian and Egyptian
races, and others throughout Eastern Africa, and
still more so in the Hottentot race, grows to an
extraordinary size ; and this may be the reason
why the Joy is described by some travellers as
a caruncle for which we have no name : or it may,
perhaps, be a distinct excrescence from the pre-
puce of the clitoris : it has been described to me
as a caruncle a little in front of the meatus
urinarius : many of the Egyptians assert that it
is the clitoris itself that is amputated, (as Ludolph
also does in his Comment. to his Ethiop. Hist.
p. 273, finding fault with those who say other-
wise ;) and they affirm that this is done for the
purpose of lessening the libidinous passion : such,
indeed, appears to be the case in some instances,
but not generally ; and it may have led to a mis-
application of the term ja, in post-classical times:
an analogous practice, one still more barbarous,
is said to have obtained among an African race
hence called the Colobi : see y: Abu-l-Kasim
Ez-Zahráwce spcaks of the amputation of the re-
dundance of the Ji, when preternaturally large,
and also of an excrescence in the vulva: the
former he describes in such a manner as plainly
shows that he means thereby the clitoris : the
latter, in terms apparently indicating a preter-
natural clongation of the lower part of the pre-
puce of the clitoris; as "an cxcreseence of flesh
at, or in, the mouth of the vulva, such as fille it
up, and sometimes protrudes externally, like a
tail, wherefore the ancients term it the caudal
disease (المرض الذنبى) ; and this," he says,
"should be amputated, like as the play is ampu-
tated" when preternaturally large: (Albucasis de
Chirurgia, pp. 314 and 316:) in some of our
medical books, the term " caudatio" is defined
as " an elongation of the clitoris;" inconsistently
with the foregoing description of "the caudal
disense :"] the pl. [of mult.] of ◌ْبَظُر is ◌َوبُظُور (M,
يَا أَبْنَ (.Mpb). أبظر [.Meb, K,) and [pl. of pauc
O son of her who amputates] مُقَطِعَةِ البُظُورِ
„play !] is an expression of contumely employed
by the Arabs whether the mother of the person
addressed be really a circumeiser of females or

by itself; and of anything that will not go, or
be sent, by itself, as a letter, and a present, one
Bays, بَعَثَ به :(Msb:) [thus,] ◌ُبَعْتَه significs he
sent him, or it, alone, by himself, or by itself;
and ~ Sff, he sent him, or it, by, or with,
another, or others: (L:) but El-Fárábec Bays
that the former of these two has another signifi-
cation, which will be found below; and that the
latter signifies he sent him, or it. (Msb.) Hence,
The being sent to the war was ضُرِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْبَعْثُ
appointed them and imposed upon them as an
obligation. (Meb.) You say, بَعْتُهُ لِكَذَا [Ile sent
him for such a thing or purpose]. (A, TA.)
[And بَعَثَ إلَيْهِ بِكَذَا He sent to him such a thing ;
lit., he sent to him a messenger with such a thing.]
And ◌ِبَعَثَ الجُنْدَ إِلَى الغَزْو [He sent the army
to the war]. (TA.) And بَعَثَ عَلَيْهِمُ البَلاَة [He
sent upon them trial, or affliction;] he caused
trial, or affliction, to befall them. (TA.) _

and ◌ْبَعَب (L) and ◌ْتَبْعَاث [an intensive form],
(TA,) He roused him, excited him, or put him
in motion or action; (A, L, Mgh, TA ;) namely,

and particularly,] an animal lying down, or &

that bound her shank to her arm, and dismissed
her; or he roused her, or made her to rise, she

فَبَعْتُّنَا الْبَعِيرَ فَإِذَا العِقْدُ تَحْتَّهُ ,respecting 'Aisheh
[And we made the camel to rise, and lo, the nech-
lace was beneath him]. (TA.) You say also,

(TA,) He roused him, or amohe him, from his

also signify The quichening, vivifying, or revivi-
fying, of the dead; the raising of the dead to
life; (Ş, Ķ, TA;) by God, (TA,) on the day
called يوم البعث (S,TA) the day [of resurrec-
tion,] when those who are in the graves shall be
وبَعَثَ اللّهُ الخَلْقَ ,raised. (A, Mgh.) You Bay
and 3,31, God quickened, vivified, revivified,
or raised to life, manhind, and the dead. (TA.)
,TK,) Ie (a man وبعث .aor. ", (inf. n ,بعث .■
TA) was sleepless, or wakeful. (Ķ,"TA.) [See

6. 1,4245 [They roused, excited, incited, urged,
or instigated, one another; or put one another
in motion or action ; to do a thing]. Onc says,
Enjoin ye, or charge] تَوَاصَوْا بِالخَيْرِ وَتَبَاعَثُوا عَلَيْهِ
ye, one another to do good, and rouse ye, or
excite ye, &c., one another to do it]. (A.)
7. Esajt He became sent ; [i. c. he went,
being sent; ] quasi-pass. of dy, as signifying "he
sent him :" ($, Msb, K :) he rose, and went
amoy : (TA :) he rose to go forth. (Bd in ix. 46.)
You Bay, انبعث لكذَا [He ment, being sent, or
he rose, and went away, or he rose to go forth,
for such a thing or purpose]. (A, TA.) And
,Such a one rose, and went amay انبعث فُلَانْ لِشَأْنِه
انبعث فى to perform his affair. (TA.) And
-J! He hastened, made haste, sped, or was quick
or swift, in going, journeying, or pace. (S.)
And :ْانبعث الشَّي, i.e. ◌َاِنَّدَفَع [The thing became
impelled, or propelled; or went quickly, or swiftly,
as though impelled or propelled; &c.]; as also
انبعث المَاءُ ,TA.) [Thus] you Bay) . تبعّث ٢
[The water poured out, or forth, as though im-
polled or propelled]. (TA in art. فجر ; &c.) And
[kence,] ◌ُتبعّثُ مِنِّىَ الشّعْر, i.e. انبعث [The poetry
issued quickly from me], as though it flowed
(Jú até): so in the $ and Ķ: but in some
of the copies of the $, in the place of Ju, we
find سار. (TA.) And ◌ّانبعث بشَر [He broke forth
with evil, or mischief ]. (JK in art. jy.) __ [ He
became roused, excited, incited, urged, instigated,
or put in motion or action.] You say,

caused it to come forth. (S.) Hence, in the Kur
[c.9], ◌ِإذا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِى الْقُبُور When that which is
in the graves is raised, and caused to come forth :

She brought forth many children] + بَطْنَّهَا لِزَوْجِهَا
to her husband; i.q.ْتَثَرَت :see يَعِيج] . (K.) -
I disclosed, or revealed, to him! بَعَجْتُ لَّهُ بَطْنِى
my secret [or my whole mind]. (A.) Esh-Shem-
makh uses the phrase ◌َبَعَجْتُ إِلَيْهِ البَطْن [mean-
ing the same]. (TA.) - ◌َبَعَجَ بَطْنّهُ لَك signifies
[also] } He took extraordinary pains, or exceeded
the usual bounds, in giving thee sincere, honest,
or faithful, advice, or counsel. (Ķ, TA.) __

his land. (A.)- بَعْجَ الأَرْضَ آبَارًا ! He dug many
بَعَجَ الأرْضَ وَبَجَعَهَا - (wells in the ground. (A

(TA.)- بَعَجَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا مِعَاهَا !The world dis-
closed to him what it contained, of treasures, and
other possessions, and spoil: also said of 'Omar,
بَعَجَتْ هُذِهِ الأَرْضَ - (.in another trad. (TA
-A tract of good land inter + عَذَاةً طَيِّبَةُ الأَرْضِ
vened in the middle of this land [as though clearing
it]. (L) - ◌ُّبَعَجَهُ الحُب I Love threm him into
mourning, or sorrow; brought grief to him :
