THIS EDITION
Abu al- Hajjaj Yusuf al- Mizzi (died 742 A.H. / 1341 A.D.) undertook
in his book Tuhfatul-Ashraf the task of indexing the contents of the two
Canonical Books (as- Sahihayn) and the four Sunan books and other re-
lated books. The book revolves upon the chain of the narrators of the
prophet's Traditions (Hadith). The author arranged the names of the
prophet's companions in alphabetical order. Then he divided each com-
panion's section into subsections under the chains of narrators, also ar-
ranged alphabetically.
The editing and the publication of Tuhfatul Ashraf was undertaken by
the late Abdussamad Sharafuddin of India between the years 1965- 1974.
Unfortunately, however, the editor relied in the production of his edition
on later manuscripts of the book. Moreover, being unfamiliar with the
whole field and the exact names of the narrators, the editor has made a
great number of mistakes and errors in the texts of the Hadiths and the
names of narrators.
In addition to the production of a more authentic and well documented
edition of the book, we have found it useful to add a number of things to
the present edition to enlarge and distinguish it. These include:
1. Reference by section (juzu'), page and number to the location of every
Hadith in as-Sahihayn, the Four Books of Sunan and other relevant
books.
2. Reference in the footnotes to all the different chains of the Hadith cited
in al-Musnad by Imam Ahmad. Hence the present edition points out all
the Hadiths that are common to al-Tuhfat and al-Musnad.
3. Associating al-Tuhfat to al-Musnadul Jami' in the citation of every Ha-
dith adding all the sources cited therein. Among these, besides Imam
Ahmad's - al-Musnad are: al-Muwatta' by Malik, al-Musnad by Al-
Humaydi, al-Musnad by Abd bin Humayd, as-Sunan by ad-Darimi, al-
Adabul Mufrad, Raf'ul Yadayn, al-Qira'a Khalfal Imam and Khalq
af'alil Ibad by al-Bukhari, Abodullah bin Ahmad's Supplement on his
father's Musnad, and as-Sahih by Ibn Khuzayma.
4. For easy reference, the last volume (vol. 13) has been entirely devoted
to the alphabetical indexing of the Hadiths.
