Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
A mercy for the ummah of Rasūlullah
صَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
عن ابن عباس رَضِ لَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: قال رسول الله صَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:
((أول هذا الأمر نبوة ورحمة، ثم يكون خلافة ورحمة، ثم
يكون ملكا ورحمة، ثم يكون إمارة ورحمة، ثم يتكادمون

عليه تكادم الحمر فعليكم بالجهاد)"
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهما narrates that
Rasulullah ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم said, "The earlier stages of
(the leadership of) this Din is prophethood coupled
with mercy. Thereafter, it will be caliphate-hood
coupled with mercy, followed by monarchy coupled
with mercy and then emirate-hood coupled with
mercy. After that, the leaders will fiercely bite on to
(protect) their leadership the way donkeys bite (on

to their food). At that time, I advise you to strive (in
the path of Allah).
The reign and era of Rasulullah Lakaf was of
prophethood, coupled with mercy. Thereafter, the
reigns of Sayyidunā Abu Bakr Meals, Sayyidunā
رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Sayyiduna 'Uthman ,رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Umar
and
Sayyidunā 'Alī deals were of caliphate-hood
coupled with mercy. Thereafter followed the era of
monarchy and kingship, Sayyiduna Muawiyah
dettky being the first of the monarchs; his reign was
filled with mercy, justice and stability.

عن سالم بن عبد الله بن عمر رَضِ لَّهُ عَنْهُ يحدث عن أبيه أن
عمر بن الخطاب رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كان يقول: إن الله بدأ هذا الأمر
حين بدأ بنبوة ورحمة، ثم يعود إلى خلافة، ثم يعود إلى سلطان
ورحمة، ثم يعود ملكا ورحمة، ثم يعود جبرية تكادمون

Sayyiduna 'Umaribn Khattab deals would say,
"Indeed, Allah has started (the leadership of) this
Din from the beginning with prophethood coupled
with mercy. It will then become a caliphate-hood
(coupled with mercy) followed by a sultanate-hood
coupled with mercy. Thereafter, it will become a
monarchy coupled with mercy. After that, it will
become an oppressive leadership wherein they will

fiercely bite on (to protect their leadership) the
way donkeys bite (on to their food)."
عن عائشة أم المؤمنين رَضِ لّهُعَنْهَا قالت: ما زال بي ما رأيت من
أمر الناس في الفتنة، حتى إني لأُتمنی أن یزید الله عز وجل

معاوية من عمري في عمره.
Sayyidatuna 'Aishah (caule), the mother of the
believers, said, "I was very much perturbed when I
saw the condition of the people, afflicted with
tribulations until I even wished that Allah would
increase in the lifespan of Muawiyah from my
lifespan (due to the peace and stability established
by him)."

His justice
عن أبي هريرة المكتب حباب قال: كنا عند الأعمش رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ
فذكروا عمر بن عبد العزيز رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ وعدله، فقال الأعمش
رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: فكيف لو أدركتم معاوية؟ قالوا: يا أبا محمد، يعني في
حلمه؟ قال: لا والله، ألا بل في عدله."

The justice of Sayyiduna 'Umaribn 'Abdil 'Azīz
días was (once) mentioned in the gathering of
Imam A'mash als.5. He remarked, "(You are
amazed by the justice of Sayyiduna 'Umaribn 'Abdil
'Azīz alas.) You would be astonished (even more)
if you were to have been in the time of Muawiyah."
Someone enquired, "Are you referring to his
forbearance, O Abū Muhammad?" Imam A'mash
aldus replied, "By Allah, no! Rather, I am referring
to his justice."

عن سعد بن أبي وقاص رَضِاللَُّ عَنْهُ قال: ما رأيت أحدا بعد
عثمان أقضى بحق من صاحب هذا الباب، يعنى: معاوية.

Sayyidunā Sa'd ibn Abī Waqqās dethe said, "I have
not seen anyone after 'Uthman deals who was
more fulfilling of rights than the owner of this
door, i.e. Muawiyah deals."

عن الحارث رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ قال: لما رجع على رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُ من صفين علم
أنه لا يملك أبدا، فتكلم بأشياء كان لا يتكلم بها، وحدث
بأحاديث كان لا يتحدث بها، فقال فيما يقول: أيها الناس، لا
تكرهوا إمارة معاوية، والله لو قد فقدتموه لقد رأيتم الرءوس

تندر من کواهلها كالحنظل.
Sayyidunā 'Alī deals said upon returning from the
Battle of Șiffin, "O people! Do not abhor the emirate
of Muawiyah (he is just), for indeed, by Allah, if
you were to lose him, you would see heads falling
from the upper backs like the colocynth (plants
falling from trees) (i.e. you would see oppression
amongst those thereafter)."

His leadership skills and his generosity
عن ابن عمر رَضِ لِلَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: ما رأيت أحدا بعد رسول الله
صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أسود من معاوية، قيل ولا أبو بكر؟ قال: كان
أبو بكر وعمر وعثمان خيرا منه، وهو أسود.41
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umarkeals said, "After Rasulullah
I have not seen anyone more befitting of ,صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
leadership than Muawiyah." He was asked, "Not
even Abu Bakr, ('Umarand 'Uthman)?" He replied,
"(By Allāh!) Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman were
better than him, but (by Allah!) he was more
befitting of leadership than them."
Imam Ahmad alds, among other scholars,
explained the word aswad to mean askhā, generous.
This characteristic of generosity of Sayyiduna

Muawiyah Mewhy is confirmed by the following

narration.
عن ابن عباس رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: ما رأيت رجلا كان أخلق
للملك من معاویة، کان الناس یردون منه على أرجاء واد
رحب، لم يكن بالضّق، الحصِرِ، العُصُعُص، المتغضّب.

Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas Real said, "I have not seen a
man more befitting for leadership than Muawiyah.
People would come to him with such high hopes
(and needs) as though he was a large water valley.
He was neither miserly nor niggardly, nor was he
ill-mannered or hot-tempered."

His patience and forbearance
عن ابن عمر رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: معاوية من أحلم الناس.

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umarkedly said, "Mu awiyah is the
most forbearing of people."
وقال عبد الملك بن مروان رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ يوما وذكر معاوية
رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فقال: ما رأيت مثله في حلمه واحتماله وكرمه44.
'Abdul Malik ibn Marwan alds mentioned once
that he had not seen anyone similar to Sayyiduna
Mu'awaiyah Meals in respect to his patience,
forbearance and kindness.

عن موسى بن عبد الملك بن عمير رَحِمَهُمَا اللَّهُ عن أبيه قال:

كان معاوية بن أبي سفيان من أحلم الناس.
'Abdul Malik ibn 'Umayr allagas said, "Muawiyah
ibn Abī Sufyan was the most forbearing of people."
قال قبيصة بن جابر رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: ما رأيت أحدا أعظم حلما ولا
أكثر سؤددا ولا أبعد أناة ولا ألين مخرجا، ولا أرحب باعا
بالمعروف من معاوية".
Qabīsah ibn Jabir aldassays, "I have not seen
anyone with more forbearance, more worthy of
leadership, more dignity, more kindheartedness or
more rigorousness in righteous deeds than
Mu'āwaiyah."

He was trustworthy and truthful
عن مجاهد وعطاء رَحِمَهُمَا اللَّهُ عن ابن عباس رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُما أن
معاوية رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أخبره: أنه رأى رسول الله صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
قصر من شعره بمشقص. فقلنا لابن عباس رَحِمَهُمَا اللَّهُ: ما
بلغنا هذا إلا عن معاوية، فقال: ما كان معاوية على رسول الله

صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ متهما.
Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas Reais narrates that
Sayyiduna Mu'awaiyah deals informed him that he
saw Rasulullah ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم trimming his hair with a
short-edged arrow. Mujahid and 'Ata allages said to
Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbās kcal), "This (hadith) has
only come to us from Muawiyah." Sayyiduna Ibn
'Abbas Real assured them that Sayyiduna
Muawiyah &eals (was truthful and trustworthy

Sayyidunā Muawiyah deals was from the senior
رَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُم Many of the Sahabah. رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُم Sahabah
narrated Hadith from him. Amongst them were
Sayyidunā 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas kcal, Sayyiduna
Abū Sa'īd Khudrī deals, Sayyidunā Abū Darda
, رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Sayyiduna Jarir ibn 'Abdillah,رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Sayyidunā Nu'mān ibn Bashīr deals, Sayyidunā
‘Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn 'Ās bacaulé, Sayyidunā Wail
ibn Hujr deals, Sayyiduna 'Abdullah ibn Zubayr
. رَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and Sayyiduna Saib ibn Yazid رَضَاللَّهُ عَنْهُمَ
From the Tabi'in, Sa'id ibn Musayyab alls,
'Algamah ibn Waqqas aids, 'Urwah ibn Zubayr
Real., Muhammad ibn Hanafiyyah (Ibn 'Alī)
.and many others narrate from him رَضِّ اللّهُ عَنْهُمُ

His Humilty
خرج معاوية رَّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فقاموا له، فقال: سمعت رسول الله
صَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يقول: ((من سره أن يمثل له الرجال قياما، فليتبوأ

مقعده من النار))
Sayyiduna Mu āwiyah &eukg once came to his
courtroom and the people around him stood (to
welcome and honor him). Sayyiduna Muawiyah
&als rebuked them saying, "I heard Rasūlullah
Lukas saying, 'Whoever is pleased that people
appear before him standing (up for him), then let
him make his abode in the Hellfire.""

المنبر بدمشق يخطب الناس وعليه قميص مرقوع.

Abū Himlah ala narrates that he saw Sayyiduna
Muawiyah deals addressing the people in
Damascus from the pulpit while he was wearing a
patched shirt.

عن يونس بن ميسرة بن حلبس رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ قال: رأيت معاوية
في سوق دمشق وهو مردف وراءه وصفيا عليه قميص مرقوع
الجيب، وهو يسير في أسواق دمشق.

Yunus ibn Maysarah Kids narrates that he saw
Sayyiduna Mu awiyah deals in the marketplace of
Damascus with a servant trailing behind him; he
was wearing a shirt which had a patched pocket. He
was in this manner while strolling the marketplaces
of Damascus.

Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم wished for his and his
family's honor
عن عائشة رضىُاللهُعنها، قالت: جاءت هند بنت عتبة، قالت: یا
رسول الله، ما كان على ظهر الأرض من أهل خباء أحب إلي أن
يذلوا من أهل خبائك، ثم ما أصبح اليوم على ظهر الأرض أهل
خباء، أحب إلي أن يعزوا من أهل خبائك،
قال صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((وأيضا والذي نفسي بيده)

Sayyidatuna 'Aishah Geals narrates that once
Sayyidatuna Hind bint 'Utbah Gear (the mother of
Sayyidunā Mu awiyah &dl) came (to Rasulullah
and said, "O Rasulullah! There was a (صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
time (in my life) when there was no family on the
surface of the earth I wished to see their
degradation more than I did your family, but today

there in no family on the surface of the earth I wish
to see honored more than I do your family."
Rasulullah ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم remarked, "I too (wished
similarly), by Him in whose Hand my soul is."

He is the maternal uncle of every believer
عن أبي طالب رَحِمَةُاللَّهُ أنه سأل أبا عبد الله (أحمد بن حنبل)
رَحِمَةُ اللّهُ: أقول: معاوية خال المؤمنين؟ وابن عمر خال
المؤمنين؟ قال: نعم، معاوية أخو أم حبيبة بنت أبي سفيان،
زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ورحمهما، وابن عمر أخو
حفصة زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ورحمهما، قلت: أقول:

معاوية خال المؤمنين؟ قال: نعم.
Abu Țalib &l& narrates that he asked Imam
Ahmad ibn Hanbal aids, "Can I say that Muawiyah
is the maternal uncle of the believers, and likewise
Ibn 'Umar?" Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal aldus replied,
"Definitely! Mu awiyah is the brother of Umm
رَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ the daughter of Abu Sufyan , رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا Habibah

and the wife of Nabi ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم , and Ibn
Umarرَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهم is the brother of Hafsah رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا, (the
daughter of 'Umarieals and) the wife Nabi
again asked, "Can I say رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ Abu Talib". صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Muawiyah is the maternal uncle of the believers?"
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal ◌ُرحمَهُ اللَّه replied in the
affirmative.
