At this occasion, he consoled Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan Meals saying, "Your two sons (Sayyidunā Yazīd and Sayyidunā Muawiyah 18 Kanzul 'Ummal 37550 - 41 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Muawiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil Real) are reformers. And it is not permissible for us to dismiss one who is a reformer." Sayyidunā 'Umar xedhs), at the time of his death, prayed, "O Allah! I make you a witness over the governors (I had appointed) over the cities. I had sent them (to the respective cities due to my reliance upon them) so that they may administer justice amongst them, teach them the their Din and the Sunnah of their Nabi Leaf, distribute amongst them their spoils of war and refer to me in their issues in which they find difficulty." 19 S عن مجاهد رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قال: لو رأيتم معاوية لقلتم: هذا 20 المهدي. 19 Șaķīņ Muslim 567 20 As-Sunnah li Abī Bakr ibn Khallal 669 - 42 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik Imam Mujahid aulas said, "If you were to have seen Muawiyah, you would have certainly assumed him to be the (awaited) mahdī." Hisham ibn 'Ammar ald narrates that Sayyiduna Muawiyah deals became unconscious near the time of his death, when he regained his consciousness he said, "Fear Allah for verily the one who fears Him, He protects him, and there is no protection for the one who does not fear Allah.". Even at the time of his death, Sayyiduna Muawiyah Ledtl's continued to guide and remind the people. 21 Ansābul Ashraf 424 - 43 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil His intelligence and the Du ā of Rasūlullah Sayyidunā 'Irbad ibn Sāriyah Sulamī deals narrates that he heard Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم saying, "0 Allah! Grant Mu awiyah the knowledge of the book (the Qur'an) and accounting and protect him from the torment (of the Hereafter)." 22 Musnad Ahmad 17152 - 44 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil عن مسلمة بن مخلد رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ أنه رأى معاوية رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُ يأكل فقال لعمرو بن العاص: إن ابن عمك هذا المِخْضَد ما إني أقول ذا وقد سمعت رسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يقول: 23 ((اللُّهُمَّ علمه الكتاب ومكن له في البلاد وقه العذاب» Sayyiduna Maslamah ibn Makhlad deals narrates that he once saw Sayyiduna Muawiyah deals eating, he indicated to him and said to Sayyidunā 'Amr ibn 'As deals, "This cousin of yours is a gourmand. I say this but I have heard Rasūlullah supplicating, 'O Allah! (Sayyidunā Mu awiyah d'exkg) the book (Qur'an), grant him sovereignty over the lands and protect him from the torment (of the Hereafter)'." 23 Fadāil Aş-Şaņābah 1750 - 45 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik عن ابن أبي مليكة رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ: قيل لابن عباس رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُما: هل لك في أمير المؤمنين معاوية، فإنه ما أوتر إلا بواحدة؟ قال: 24 أُصاب، إنه فقيه. Ibn Abī Mulaykah alds narrates that it was said to Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas ketil, "Do you have anything to say regarding the leader of the believers, Muawiyah, for he only performs one rak'ah for Witr salah?" He replied, "What he has done is correct. He is indeed a faqīh (a jurist, well- versed in regards to laws of Sharī'ah)." Sayyiduna Muawiyah Meals was from amongst those Sahabah Realy who would issue fatawa (legal edicts). 24 Șaķīņ Al-Bukhārī 3765 - 46 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik The minimum for Witr salah according to majority of the jurists, including Imam Shafi'ī, Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad, is one rak'ah. Imam Abu Hanīfah however is of the view that the minimum is three rak'ahs. Details can be found in the books of Hadith and fiqh. عن ابن عباس رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: ليس أحد منا أعلم من 25 معاوية. Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas Reais said, "There is none amongst us who is more learned than Muawiyah." 25 Mușannaf 'Abdur Razzaq 4641 - 47 - Amir al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik قال عمر بن الخطاب رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: تذكرون كسرى وقيصر ودهاءهما وعندكم معاوية. 26 Sayyidunā 'Umar ibn Khattab deals said, "You speak regarding the wit and intelligence of the Khosrau and the Caesar, whereas you have Muawiyah amongst you." 26 Tārīkh Tabarī 5/330 - 48 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil Paradise is guaranteed for him قال: ((لا)) 27 Sayyidatuna Umm Haram (ca", narrates that she heard Nabi ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم saying, "The first army of my ummah to undertake a naval expedition, paradise is assured for them." Sayyidatuna Umm Haram Goals says, "I asked (Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم) :Will I be from amongst them?" He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم replied, "You will be صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ from amongst them." Thereafter, Nabi said, "The first army of my ummah to invade the 27 Șaķīņ Al-Bukhārī 2924 - 49 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedils city of the Caesar, they will be forgiven." I then asked (again), "Will I be from amongst them O Rasulullah?" He ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم replied, "No." Sayyidunā Muawiyah teurs, the governor of the Levant at that time, was the general of the first naval expedition of Islam. The expedition took place in the reign of Sayyiduna 'Uthman deals against the Byzantine Empire. Hence, this hadith is a glad tiding for Sayyidunā Muawiyah; Jannah is guaranteed for him. This hadith is also a glad tiding for Yazid ibn Muawiyah (che). He was the first to invade the city of the Caesar. Just like his father deaths, Yazid ibn Muawiyah (ecaul") has also been the target of criticism due to the historic fabrications against him. Nevertheless, this hadith serves as a glad tiding for him. - 50 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil Scribe of Revelation, personal scribe of Nabī صَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عن ابن عباس رَضِ لَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: كان المسلمون لا ينظرون إلى أبي سفيان ولا يقاعدونه، فقال النبي صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يا نبي الله ثلاث أعطنيهن، قال: ((نعم)) قال: عندي أحسن العرب وأجمله، أم حبيبة بنت أبي سفيان، أزوجكها، قال: ((نعم)) قال: ومعاوية، تجعله كاتبا بین یدیك، قال: ((نعم)) قال: وتؤمرني 28 حتى أقاتل الكفار، كما كنت أقاتل المسلمين، قال: ((نعم)) Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas kcal, narrates that (initially) the Muslims would not look to Sayyidunā Abū Sufyan del. (with respect) nor sit in his company. So he (once) said to Nabi ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم ,"O Nabi of صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Allah! Confer upon me three things." He replied in the affirmative. So he continued, "I have 28 Șaķīņ Muslim 2501 - 51 - Amir al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil the best and most beautiful (woman) amongst the Arab, Umm Habībah bint Abī Sufyan; I wish to marry her off to you." He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم replied in the affirmative. He (Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan kedl) continued, "(My son) Muawiyah, I request that you take him as your personal scribe." He cta acceded to his request. He (Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan dal) continued, "I request that you assign me as the General of the (Muslim) Army so that I can fight the disbelievers as I used to fight the Muslims (before I accepted Islam)." He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم granted him his wish. Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan Meals accepted Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah in the 8th year of hijrah. His daughter, Sayyidatunā Umm Habībah رَضِ اللَّهُعَنْهَا was already married to Rasūlullah at this time. Hence, there is an apparent صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ objection to the first clause in the hadith. The - 52 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik commentators of hadith mention that there are two possible explanations. Firstly, when Sayyidatunā Umm Habībah رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا married Rasulullah Ucleafs, it was without the pleasure of her father, Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan Meal .. Hence, he wished to renew the marriage between them and bless the marriage himself. The second possible explanation is that Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan deals wished to marry off a second daughter to Rasūlullah Uckeauf due to the honor and blessing he had seen from the first. This explanation is taken from the hadith narrated in the Sahihayn where Sayyidatunā Umm Habībah (saules proposed to Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم to marry her sister. In this case, it will be said that the name mentioned in this hadith is an error from one of the narrators. The narrator mentioned Umm Habibah in place of the other daughter's name. 29 Sayyidunā Ibn 'Abbas keule narrates, "I was a young boy, running (and playing) with the children. I turned around and suddenly saw the Nabī of Allah behind me, coming (towards me). So I thought to myself, 'The Nabi of Allah has only come for me. (He will certainly assign me a task)' Thus, I 29 Musnad Ahmad 3104 - 54 - Amir al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik ran so that I could hide behind the door of a house. I did not look back until he caught up to me. He then took me by my neck and affectionately صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ clapped me between my shoulders. He then said, 'Go and call Muawiyah for me'. Muawiyah was the personal scribe of Rasūlullah ,So I hurried to Murawiyah and told him. صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ 'Respond to (the call of) the Nabi of Allah, for indeed he needs (you)'." عن عبد الله بن عمرو رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُما أن معاوية رضي الله عنه كان يكتب بين يدي النبي صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.° Sayyidunā 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr Reale narrates that Sayyiduna Mu awiyah was the personal scribe of . Sayyidunā Sahl ibn Hanzaliyyah Ansari teak narrates that (the tribes of) 'Uyaynah and Aqra' asked Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم something. He commanded Sayyiduna Mu awiyah (R) to صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ transcribe the response for them. He &eaks wrote it صَلَّ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ sealed it. He صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and Rasulullah then commanded him to give it to them. 31 Șaķī Ibn Hibban 545 - 56 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedik عن محمد بن جعفر بن الزبير عن عبد الله بن الزبير رَضِ الَّهُ عَنْهُما ذكر من كتب للنبي صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فذكر عبد الله 32 بن الأرقم، وذکر معاوية. Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Zubayr was narrates that Sayyiduna 'Abdullah ibn Zubayr رَضِ اللَّهُعَنْهَا was (once) mentioning the scribes of Rasūlullah (He mentioned (from amongst them. صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Sayyiduna 'Abdullah ibn Arqam ◌ُرَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْه and . رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Sayyiduna Mu awiyah After Rasulullah ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم ,Sayyiduna Mu awiyah also served as a scribe for Sayyiduna Abu رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ . رَضَِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Bakr 32 As-Sunnah li Abī Bakr ibn Khallal 694 - 57 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil He maintained the supremacy and dominance of the Din عن جابر بن سمرة رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: انطلقت إلى رسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِوَسَلَّمَ ومعي أبي، فسمعته يقول: ((لا يزال هذا الدين عزيزا منيعا إلى اثني عشر خليفة))، فقال كلمة صمّنيها الناس، 33 فقلت لأبي: ما قال؟ قال: ((كلهم من قريش) Sayyidunā Jābir ibn Samurah Keang narrates that (once) when he and his father went to Rasūlullah (he heard him saying, "This Din (of Islam, صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ will remain powerful and dominant until there will have been twelve caliphs." He ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم then said something which I was unable to hear due to the noise of the people. So I enquired from my father as to what he ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم said. My father informed me 33 Şahīņ Muslim 1821 - 58 - Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil that he ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم said, "All of them (the twelve caliphs) will be from Quraysh." The scholars unanimously agree that Sayyiduna Muawiyah Meals was one of the twelve caliphs . 34 When Sayyiduna Mu awiyah Meals passed away, Dahhak alas came out (with the funeral procession) and said, "Verily Muawiyah, the leader of the believers, was a servant from the servants of Allah; Allah extinguished the dissentions through him, and he spread the dunya through him. He has indeed fulfilled his vow (by ruling aptly)." 34 Ansābul Ashraf 436 - 60 -
