Amir al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
After Rasūlullah Ucckai, Sayyiduna Muawiyah
Real's continued spreading Islam, focusing on the
Levant. He engaged in many battles in this time.
Amongst them was the Battle of Yamamah, wherein
he assisted in the assassination of the self-
proclaimed prophet, Musaylamah, the imposter. He
also served as a scribe for Sayyidunā Abu Bakr
. رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
In the reign of Sayyiduna 'Umar deals, Sayyiduna
Muawiyah Meus served as the army general of
many battles including the famous battle against
the Byzantine Empire. He was then appointed by
Sayyiduna 'Umar deals as the governor of the
Levant. He remained in this post till the demise of
Sayyidunā Umar deals.
Sayyidunā 'Uthmān &eals maintained Sayyidunā
Muawiyah's deals post as the governor of the

Levant and added more cities and lands to his
governorship.
Here
too
he
continued
the
propagation of Islam and also engaged in various
battles. A noteworthy battle he fought in this time
was the battle against the Byzantine Empire in the
27th and 28th year after hijrah, where he conquered
Cyprus and other Greek islands. This was a strategic
and difficult battle. He undertook the first naval
voyage to conquer this land. By accomplishing this
incredible feat, he had earned the glad tiding
prophesized by Rasūlullah Udeaf and thus
secured Paradise for himself.
Sayyiduna 'Uthman deals was assassinated in the
36th year after hijrah. Sayyiduna Mu awiyah deal
sought justice for him and believed that the
murderers should not be shown leniency. Hence,
this led to the unfortunate long civil war between

the Muslims. Sayyiduna Mu awiyah deals as the
leader on one side and Sayyiduna 'Alī deals on the
other. It is a false rumor that Sayyiduna Muawiyah
for the رَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ fought against Sayyiduna 'All رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
love of power. It was a matter of fighting for what
each of them believed was correct.
Soon after, Sayyiduna 'Alī deals was assassinated.
Likewise, the wretched individuals behind his
martyrdom attempted to assassinate Sayyidunā
Muawiyah &edk. but miserably failed. After the
martyrdom of Sayyiduna 'Alī xeals, his eldest son,
Sayyiduna Hasan &al assumed the role of the
caliph. However, considering the greater good: to
create peace amongst the Muslims and to avoid
conflicts and civil wars, he handed over the
caliphate to Sayyiduna Mu awiyah deaths in the 41st

year after hijrah. This was prophesized by
Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم decades before.
After assuming leadership of the entire Muslim
ummah, Sayyidunā Mu awiyah deals
continued
propagating Islam and waging war against the non-
Muslims with a great amount of his focus and
energy against the Byzantine Empire. He had even
assigned one army for the summer and one for the
winter against them.
During his caliphate, the Islamic Empire spread far
and wide. Constantinople, the island of Sicily,
Sudan and lands as far as Kabul and Sijistan were
conquered. Parts of Sindh and Hind also came into
Muslim rule during his time.
Sayyiduna Mu awiyah Weak. remained the caliph
for nineteen years. He ruled with justice and

fulfilled everyone's rights. He looked after the
needs of his subjects. He ensured that the internal
matters of the ummah were taken care of well. He
had put in place and had implemented many
systems which would make the lives of his subjects
easier and efficient. The Muslims lived in peace and
harmony and loved and revered Sayyiduna
رَضِ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ Mu awiyah
Prior to his demise, Sayyiduna Muawiyah del
became very sick. On one occasion, he fell
unconscious. When he gained his senses, he advised
the Muslims to fear Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and thereafter
passed away. Sayyiduna Muawiyah deaths breathed
his last in Rajab, 60 AH in Damascus. He had
bequeathed that he be enshrouded with the shirt of
Rasūlullāh
and صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
that
the
blessed
fingernails and hair strands of Rasūlullah

which he had preserved, be placed in his, صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
eyes, nose, ears and mouth. His janāzah was led by
Dahhak ibn Qays ald . He was then laid to rest in
Damascus.
May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى be pleased with him and may
He unite us with him in Jannah.

Qur'anic Verses
لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ
كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنْكُمْ شَيْئًا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا
رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُمْ مُذْبِرِينَ (25) ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَى
رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنْزَلَ جُنُودًا لَمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ
كَفَرُوا وَذَلِكَ جَزَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ (26)10
"Truly Allah (alone) has granted you victory on
many battlefields- including on the Day of Hunayn,
when your large numbers elated you, though this
did not avail you in anything. Thus the earth, for all
its breadth, narrowed upon you (that day). Then
you (believers) turned away in retreat.

Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His
Messenger and upon the believers.
Moreover, He sent down hosts (of angels) that you
could not see. Thus He punished those who
disbelieved, and such is the recompense of the
disbelievers."
It
is a well-established fact that Sayyiduna
Muawiyah deals took part in the Battle of Hunayn
in the 8th year of hijrah. Thus, he is from those
سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى illustrious companions upon whom Allah
sent His sakīnah, His divine tranquility.
لَقَدْ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ فِي
سَاعَةِ الْعُسْرَةِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ
عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّهُ بِهِمْ رَءُوفُّ رَحِيمٌ (117)]

Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
Truly Allah has already granted repentance to the
Prophet as well as to the Émigrés (Muhajirun) and
the Helpers (Ansar), those who followed him in the
hour of hardship (Battle of Tabuk), after the hearts
of a party (of the believers) among them had nearly
swerved from the path of the righteous. It was then
He granted them repentance. Indeed, He was all-
kind, mercy-giving toward them. (Tawbah: 117)
Sayyiduna Mu awiyah xeals took part in the
Expedition of Tabuk in the 9th year of hijrah. Allah
has declared that he has forgiven them سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى
and granted them repentance.

لَا يَسْتَوِي مِنْكُمْ مَنْ أَنْفَقَ مِنْ قَبْلِ الْفَتْحِ وَقَاتَلَ أُولَئِكَ أَعْظَمُ
دَرَجَةً مِنَ الَّذِينَ أَنْفَقُوا مِنْ بَعْدُ وَقَاتَلُوا وَكُلَّا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَى
وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ (10)2
"Not equal among yourselves (in the sight of Allah)
are those who have spent (charitably) and fought
(in the path of Allah) before the victory (at Makkah
Mukarramah and those who did not). Those (who
did spend charitably and fight before the victory of
Makkah) are greater in rank than those who spent
(charitably) and fought (in the path of Allah)
thereafter (after the victory of Makkah
Mukarramah). Yet to each Allah has promised great
goodness (Jannah in the Hereafter). For Allah is all-
aware of all that you do."

Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
Sayyidunā Muawiyah &al., according to the
authoritative stance, brought faith before the
conquest of Makkah Mukarramah. However, due to
the social pressure in Makkah, he concealed his
faith until after the conquest. Thus, Sayyiduna
Muawiyah deals enjoys the virtue of being
promised Jannah as well holding a greater rank
than others.
For arguments sake, if we were to take the opinion
that he accepted Islam after the conquest, then too
he enjoys the virtue of being promised Jannah.
When the word husna is mentioned in the Qur'an, it
سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى refers to Jannah. And when Allah
promises something, it is guaranteed; for indeed He
does not go against His promise.

عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ مَوَدَّةً
وَاللَّهُ قَدِيرٌ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (7)

"It may be that (in due course), Allah will establish
genuine (mutual) love between you and those with
whom you had enmity. For Allah is all-powerful.
Moreover, Allah is all-forgiving, mercy-giving."
The exegetes have mentioned that mawaddah
(genuine love) in this verse refers to the
relationship that Sayyidunā Abu Sufyan Meals and
his family enjoyed with Rasulullah días, such
as Rasūlullah ckaį. appointing Sayyidunā Abū
Sufyan xeals as a governor and the marriage of
. رَضَِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا with Umm Habibah صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Rasulullah
The marriage with her established the in-law
relationship between them; Sayyidunā Muawiyah
Icule became the brother-in-law of Rasulullah

the رَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
father-in-law.

Amir al-Mu'minīn Mu āwiyah ibn Abī Sufyan kedil
He was from the close companions of
صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Rasulullah
عن ابن أبي مليكة رَحِمَةُ اللَّهُ قال: أوتر معاوية بعد العشاء
بركعة وعنده مولی لابن عباس فأتى ابن عباس فقال: دعه
فإنه قد صحب رسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.14
Ibn Abī Mulaykah aldus narrates that Sayyiduna
Muawiyah deals performed one rak ah for witr
șalāh after 'Isha Salah, and at that time a freed-
slave of Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas deals was present.
He (the freed-slave) approached Sayyiduna Ibn
'Abbas &exis (and told him regarding the one
rak'ah witr Salah). Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas deduk
remarked, "Leave him (He is well aware of how to
perform Salah), for he had indeed remained in the
". صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ company of Rasulullah

He was steadfast upon the Sunnah of
صَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Rasulullah
عن أبي الدرداء رَضِ لِلَّهُ عَنْهُ قال: ما رأيت أحدا بعد رسول الله
أشبه صلاة برسول الله صَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ من أميركم هذا يعني

معاوية.
Sayyidunā Abū Dardā Meals says, "I have not seen
anyone after Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم whose salah
resembled the salah of Rasulullah ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم more
than (the salah of) this leader of yours, i.e.
Mu‘āwiyah."

عن سعيد بن عمرو بن سعيد بن العاص رَضِاللّهُعَنْهُم قال:
اعتمر معاوية فدخل البيت فأرسل إلى ابن عمر وجلس
ينتظره حتى جاءه فقال: أين صلى رسول الله صَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
يوم دخل البيت قال: ما كنت معه ولكني دخلت بعد أن أراد
الخروج فلقيت بلالا فسألته: أین صلى فأخبرني أنه صلى بین
الأسطوانتين، فقام معاوية فصلى بينهما. 16
Said ibn 'Amr alds narrates that (once) Sayyiduna
Muawiyah Medly performed 'Umrah and entered
the House (i.e. the Kabah). He then sent for
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar &dhs and sat waiting for him
till he arrived. He then asked (him), "Where did
Rasulullah ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم perform Salah on the day he
entered the House (i.e. on the Day of the Conquest
of Makkah Mukarramah)? Sayyidunā Ibn 'Umar

deals replied, "I was not with him (when he
entered). However, I entered when he was about to
exit and found Bilal &exl (with him). So I asked
him where he ◌َصَلَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم performed Salah and he
informed me that he ◌َصَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم perform Salah
between the two pillars." Sayyiduna Muawiyah
deals then got up and performed Salah between
them.

He was rightly guided and was a guide for
others
عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي عميرة رَضِاللَّهُ عَنْهُ وكان من أصحاب
رسول الله صَلَّالَهُعَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عن النبي أنه قال لمعاوية: «اللُّهُمَّ
اجعله هادیا مهدیا واهد به))17
Sayyidunā 'Abdur Rahman ibn Abī 'Umayrah deals
narrates that Rasulullah Udeaf supplicated for
Sayyidunā Muawiyah &dl saying, "O Allah! Make
him a guide (for others), rightly-guided in himself
and guide others through him.

عن أبي إدريس الخولاني رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قال: لما عزل عمر بن
الخطاب عمير بن سعد عن حمص ولى معاوية فقال الناس:
عزل عميرا وولى معاوية فقال عمير: لا تذكروا معاوية إلا
بخير فإني سمعت رسول الله صَلَ الَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يقول: «اللُّهُمَّ اهد
به)).
Abū Idrīs al-Khawlanī aulas narrates that when
Sayyidunā 'Umar ibn al-Khattab &exul dismissed
Sayyiduna Umayr ibn Sacad ◌ُرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْه from (the
governance of) Hims and appointed Sayyidunā
Murawiyah ◌ُرَضِّ اللَّهُ عَنْه, (some of) the people began
gossiping that how can Sayyiduna 'Umayr deals be
dismissed and Sayyiduna Muawiyah delle be
appointed in his place. So Sayyiduna 'Umayr &edil
admonished the people saying, "Do not mention
Mucawiyah except with good; for indeed I heard

Rasūlullah Uckauf saying, 'O Allah! Guide
(others) through him'."
In the era of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr deals, he
appointed Sayyiduna Muawiyah seuls as the
governor of some of the cities in the Levant.
Thereafter, Sayyiduna 'Umar deals appointed him
as the governor of Hims. Then, in the era of
Sayyidunā 'Uthman deals, he appointed him as the
governor of the entire Levant. This shows the
reliance all three caliphs had upon him due to his
leadership skills and his trustworthiness.
